About this match programme
By Richard Snowball This is the away programme for the F.A.Cup 3rd Round match against Blackpool in 1955. After playing two non-league clubs in the early rounds, Scarborough at home (won 3-2), and Dorchester away (won 5-2), York were drawn away to Division One opposition Blackpool. They had won the F.A. Cup two seasons earlier in what became known as the "Matthews final", 3-1 down to Bolton, Stanley Matthews had turned on his magic and created goals for Stanley Mortensen, who scored a hat-trick, to win the game 43. Both these players were in the line-up to face York but left back George Howe managed to keep Matthews quiet and York shocked there opponents with the quality of their play to win 2-0 with goals from Sid Storey and Billy Fenton. The attendance was 26,030 which was higher than Blackpool's previous six home League matches. York had only lost one of their previous 18 matches and momentum was beginning to build for what turned out to be a tremendous season in the F.A.Cup and League.
