About this match programme
By Richard Snowball After a successful 1985/86 season in the F.A. Cup and playing Liverpool again in the 5th round, York City continued their Division Three campaign, finishing the season with a flourish, unbeaten in their last nine matches and in a creditable 7th position. York City completed their 50th season in the Football League on May 6, 1986, at Bootham Crescent with the match against Blackpool which saw York run out 3-0 winners. This completed the double over the Tangerines, York having won 2-0 there earlier in the season. Winger Tony Canham scored two of the goals, giving him 13 League and one Cup goal during his first full season in League football. As usual, Keith Walwyn was again top goalscorer with 22 League and 7 Cup goals, completing his 100 goals for the club in the process. Interestingly the three clubs relegated to Division Four that season were Swansea City, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Cardiff City, who 35 years later, all ply their trade at a much higher level.
