About this match programme

By Richard Snowball This week's featured programme against Brentford played on April 12, 1963, is from the winter of the "big freeze", when York did not play any matches from December 22, 1962, until March 8, 1963. The season was extended until May 20 with City playing seven games in March, ten in April and five in May. The enforced break seemed to work in York's favour as prior the the break they had only achieved 16 points from 24 matches and after 27 points from the remaining 22 games. This left York just below halfway in the table. This match finished in a 1-1 draw with Brentford going on the win the League and promotion the Division Three. The game attracted the season's biggest crowd of 7,904, but over the season the average attendance dropped to a post war low of 4,515. Just three days later City lost the return match at Brentford by 2-1. During the season two popular players left the club; Peter Wragg who had scored 87 goals in 297 appearances and Jimmy Weir who scored 39 goals in 95 matches in just over two seasons with York.
