About this match programme

By Richard Snowball The 1992-93 season for York City was proving to be one of best for seven years and since the heady heights of the Denis Smith/Viv Busby era. The re-building of the side had been started by John Bird and continued by John Ward but he was head-hunted by Bristol Rovers and left the club in March 1993. Assistant manager Alan Little took over and continued the good work, securing fourth place in Division Three and a play-off place. This was the first time in their history York City had appeared in the play-offs. Their opponents in the semi-final were Bury who had finished seventh in the division, 12 points behind York. The first leg at Bury was a tense and hard-fought match and finished in a goalless draw in front of the crowd of 6,620. This set up an intriguing second leg which was played on Tuesday May 19, 1993, when a crowd of 9,206 packed into Bootham Crescent. The match was no less tense than the first leg and could have swung either way till experienced midfielder Gary Swann broke the deadlock and scored the winning goal to take York to Wembley for the first time in their history.
