About this match programme
By Richard Snowball With four matches left of the 1992-93 season, the pace was warming up at the top of Division Three, and on April 10, 1993, York City entertained Cardiff City. Cardiff were top of the league and York were lying in third place, five points behind their opponents. Earlier in the season, on Boxing Day, York had made a remarkable comeback from 30 down to grab a 3-3 draw at Cardiff, so another exciting game was expected. The crowd of 6,568 were not disappointed as York put on another wonderful team performance and beat the League leaders 3-1 with goals from Jon McCarthy, Ian Blackstone and Nigel Pepper. York went on to win their next two games but lost the final match of the season at Rochdale, finishing fourth in the league and in the first pay-off position. Cardiff City were the league champions and York won the play-offs to gain the fourth promotion place along with Wrexham and Barnet. Besides being an exciting attacking side scoring 72 goals, York also had an exceptional defence which only conceded 15 goals in their 21 home matches.
