About this match programme
By Richard Snowball On January 15, 1970, York City played an F.A. Cup 3rd round second replay against 2nd Division (now Championship) Cardiff City at Birmingham City's St. Andrews ground. In the first match at Bootham Crescent played twelve days earlier, they drew 1-1 in front of a crowd of 8,439, and in the replay at Ninian Park nine days later they played out another 1-1 draw after extra time before a gate of 21,263. The second replay on the neutral ground was set to be another close fought match, and so it proved, again going to extra time before York City valiantly came out 3-1 winners against their higher rated rivals, who included the well known Welsh striker John Toshack, who later went on to play for Liverpool. One of York's scorers was Paul Aimson who had returned to the club for a second spell at the beginning of the season. As can be seen from the programme notes, York had beaten non-league opposition in the first two rounds, Whitby Town 2-0, and Bangor City 2-0 in the replay after 0-0 draw at Bangor. In the 4th round, York went down by 4-1 to local old rivals Middlesbrough in front of a bumper crowd of 38,283 at Ayresome Park. In the League, York had a better season under new manager Tom Johnson who had taken over during the previous season. They finished midtable in Division Four taking a point a game from their 46 matches.
