About this match programme
By Richard Snowball This York City match programme from the 1931-32 season is interesting because the match was attended by the then Archbishop of York , Dr. W. Temple, and it was thought to be the first time that a Archbishop of York or Canterbury had ever attended a Football League game. Unfortunately it was not to prove beneficial as City lost the game 4-2. Two months later, it was announced that York were to move to a new ground at Bootham Crescent, and they signed off their tenure at Fulfordgate on 23 April, 1932 with a 7-2 victory over Halifax Town. Local player Reg Baines, who had returned to club at the beginning of the season, scored his third hat-trick of the season in this match. Baines finished the season with 29 League goals, a feat he matched again the following season, and was a club record until Billy Fenton scored 31 goals in the 1951-52 season.
