About this match programme
By Richard Snowball After a reasonable consolidation and first season in League Two (later the Championship), York City found season 1975/76 more difficult, but had one or two reasonable results against some illustrious opponents, beating Southampton 2-1, (who went on to win the F.A. Cup that season), Fulham 1-0, Nottingham Forest 3-2 all at Bootham Crescent and a very good 2-1 victory at Bolton's Burden Park. New opposition that season were Chelsea and in the early part of the season, York came away with a creditable 0-0 draw at Stamford Bridge. On April 24, 1976, the last day of the season, the clubs played the return match but by then, York were already relegated and were playing only for pride. They put on a good display and again held the Blues, this time to a 2-2 draw. They had also drawn Chelsea at home in the F.A. Cup 4th round, but in this game, Chelsea ran out 2-0 winners in front of a Bootham Crescent crowd of 10,089. In the F.L. Cup that season York lost 1-0 at home to Liverpool in the 2nd round with another good attendance of 11,897. With the departure of Tom Johnston the previous season, new manager and exManchester United player Wilf McGuinness had not got off to good start.
