About this match programme
By Richard Snowball This programme is for the home match against Chesterfield played on February 15, 1958 and was the last game Arthur Bottom played for the club prior to his transfer to Newcastle United. There he scored 10 goals in 11 matches to save Newcastle from relegation to League 2. Signed from Sheffield United, Arthur played his first game for York on August 21, 1954 scoring a hat-trick in a 6-2 away win at Wrexham, and he continued scoring on a regular basis for the next four seasons, netting 105 goals in 158 League and Cup matches, a tremendous record which made him a York City club legend. In his first season with York he scored 31 League goals plus another 8 in the famous F.A. Cup semi-final run and followed up the next season with another 31 League and 2 Cup goals. This match against Chesterfield finished in a 3-3 draw with Bottom scoring one from the penalty spot. By coincidence after leaving Newcastle Arthur went to play for Chesterfield and finished his football career at Alfreton Town.
