About this match programme
By Richard Snowball This match was played on Boxing Day 1964 against Chesterfield who had knocked York City out of the F.A. Cup three weeks earlier. Apart from this defeat in the Cup, York were having a good season in Division Four and were lying third coming into this match. They gained ample revenge for the Cup defeat by winning the game 7-1. Two days later, York travelled to Chesterfield for the return match and drew 1-1, bringing to an end a seven match winning run, a new club record. They went on to win their next three games to make it twelve matches unbeaten, winning ten and drawing two. The good form continued until the end of the season when they finished third and won promotion to Division Three. The record of 20 wins, 1 draw and only two defeats was the best in York's history scoring 63 goals in the process. Because of this, the average home attendance of 7,185 was almost double the previous season, when they finished third from the bottom of the League, and had to apply for re-election. During the close season York had signed three players who became influential in their change of fortune. The signings included Paul Aimson who scored 25 League and 5 Cup goals. He went on to become a club goal scoring legend netting 113 goals in 248 matches during two spells at the club.
