About this match programme

By Richard Snowball This programme was for York City's Division Four away match at Crewe Alexandra played on January 21, 1961. This was ten days after York had been knocked out of the F.A. Cup in a 3rd Round replay 1-0 by Norwich City after drawing 1-1 at Bootham Crescent four days earlier. Their opponents Crewe had pulled off a major surprise by beating Chelsea 2-1 at Stamford Bridge in their 3rd Round game, and had been drawn away to Tottenham Hotspur in the 4th Round to be played the week after the match with York. A close game was expected as Crewe were lying 6th in Division Four one place and one point in front of York City. In the event, York ran out comfortable winners by 5-1 with Peter Wragg scoring four times. Whether the Crewe players had their minds on the following weeks match at Tottenham nobody knows but even so it was a wonderful away victory. This was the fifth time so far in the season York had scored four or more goals in a match and took their tally to 55 goals in 28 matches. Peter Wragg had been signed by York in 1956 from Sheffield United for a fee of £4,000, and he stayed at York for seven seasons until 1963 in which time he made 297 League and Cup appearances scoring 87 goals. He went on to play for Bradford City but continued to live in York until his death in 2004.
