About this match programme
By Richard Snowball After having had to apply for re-election the previous season, York City started the 1981-82 campaign with two wins. However they won only three matches before an enforced break in early December, forced by harsh winter conditions. During this break, manager Barry Lyons left the club and for the remainder of the season, they operated with two caretaker managers in Kevin Randall and director Barry Swallow. On resumption, York lost five and drew two of their next seven games before they found some form. Coming into the match with Crewe Alexandra, played on April 23, 1982, they had won five of their previous six home matches scoring 15 goals. This goalscoring form continued with York winning the match 6-0 and then winning two of their remaining home games by 4-0. This was the first season of three points for a win and York finished 17th in the table. In the 2nd Round of the F.A, Cup they were knocked out in a replay by non-league Altrincham. Keith Walwyn, who was to become a club legend, made his debut on the opening game of the season and he started by scoring 23 League and 2 Cup goals. Another arrival during the season who was to go on and play a big part in the club's future was centre half Denis Smith, on loan from Stoke City.
