About this match programme
By Richard Snowball York City's promotion hopes in the 1960-61 season were fading away after a disastrous set of results in the first half of April when they only took one point from four matches. The last home game on the April 22, 1961, was against near neighbours Darlington who were just below York in League Four. York returned to form with a 4-1 victory in front of a crowd of 4,271. That left York with two difficult away matches but they could not maintain their promotion push losing 6-1 at Aldershot and 1-0 at promoted side Crystal Palace. This had been a tremendous effort to regain the League Three place they had lost the previous season. York finished in fifth place and Peter Wragg was top goalscorer with 22 goals. York had the distinction of having the best defensive record in the League, but suffered in the second half of the season after Colin Addison's transfer to Nottingham Forest and an injury to Peter Wragg meant the lack of goals cost them dearly. They reached the 3rd round of the F.A. Cup losing to Norwich City after a replay, and were knocked out 2-1 in the 1st Round of the newly created League Cup by Blackburn Rovers with Colin Addison scoring York's first ever goal in this new competition.
