About this match programme

By Richard Snowball This programme is for the last match of the 1958-59 season and was the first time York City had gained promotion in their Football League history. After the misfortune of finding themselves in the newly formed Division Four, when finishing 13th in old 3rd division (North) on goal average, they turned things round and gained promotion at the first attempt into the new Division Three. York won this match against Gateshead 1-0 and secured third place in the League behind Port Vale and Coventry City. The game was watched by a crowd of 9,033 and the average home attendance for the season was 8,124. Two youngsters from the local influential minor league club Cliftonville, played a big part during the season; Barry Jackson made his debut in the opening game and played 35 times, and Colin Addison appeared 26 times scoring 10 goals. Addison was sold to Nottingham Forest in 1960 for a then club record £12,000 and later went on to play for Arsenal and Sheffield United. Barry Jackson stayed at York for the rest of his Football League career making a record 539 League and Cup appearances between 1958 and 1970, a club record that is not likely to be beaten.
