About this match programme
By Richard Snowball York City were back in Division Three for the 1984-85 season and were unbeaten in their first eight matches but they then lost four of their next five. Going into the game against Gillingham on November 3, 1984. City needed to get back to the winning ways. They did this in impressive style, winning the match 7-1 with Keith Houchen scoring a hat-trick. Houchen had taken over the striking role beside Keith Walwyn after the departure of John Byrne, who was sold to Queen’s Park Rangers for £100,000. Houchen finished the season as top goalscorer with 17 league and cup goals, ahead of Dale Banton and Walwyn, both on 12, though Walwyn had picked up an injury and did not play after February 26. The average league attendance at Bootham Crescent was 5,550, the highest for 10 years, with two crowds of more than 10,000 during the season.
