About this match programme

By Richard Snowball This programme is a wartime publication when they were only one sheet (4 pages). The Football League fixtures did not start again until August 1946, but after the end of the war the F.A. Cup recommenced in November 1945. This season was the first and only time the F.A. Cup was played on a home and away two-leg basis and York reached the 4th Round before losing heavily to Sheffield Wednesday. This programme is from the F.A. Cup 1st Round 2nd Leg and City won 4-2 after losing the away leg 0-1. In the wartime North-East League there were only ten teams, and to make up the fixture list there were Division North Cup group games qualifying for the Third Division North competition proper plus some additional matches to see the season out. A local centre forward, Ian Winters, made a name for himself this season scoring 20 goals in 24 League and Cup games. The following season when the League started again he only made limited appearance due to the emergence of local legend Alf Patrick, but still scored 10 goals in 27 appearance over two seasons.
