About this match programme
By Richard Snowball Having operated for the second half of the previous season with two caretaker managers, York City started the 1982-83 campaign with a new management team of Denis Smith and Vic Busby. It did not start well. Denis Smith was still playing and he was sent off in the third game at Hull which City lost 4-0. They won only two of their first 12 matches before form picked up and the side went on winning of 13 home games, scoring 47 goals in the process. The last home match of the season was against bottom of the table Hereford United, and for the fourth time that season, City scored five goals at home, winning 5-1. It was the sixteenth home win and they suffered only one home loss (to league winners Wimbledon). York finished the season in sixth place, four points from a promotion place in Division 4. In their 46 League and six Cup matches, they scored exactly 100 goals, with Keith Walwyn again top goal scorer with 23, followed by Brian Pollard on 19 while two other players achieved double figures. It had been a remarkable turn round for the club in a year when they had a dual celebration. It was sixty years since their formation in 1922 and fifty years since the opening of Bootham Crescent in 1932.
