About this match programme
By Richard Snowball This programme is a souvenir 20-page issue for the FA Cup sixth round tie played at Bootham Crescent on March 5, 1938, against Huddersfield Town. Since acceptance to the Football League in 1929 York City had become doughty F.A. Cup opponents, reaching the 3rd Round in their first two seasons, drawing 1-1 away against 1st Division sides Newcastle Utd. and Sheffield Utd., but losing the replays at Fulfordgate in front of 12,000+ crowds. In the season 1936-37 they reached the 4th Round losing to Swansea Town in a replay at Bootham Crescent. Then followed the historic 1937-38 season when York reached the 6th Round holding 1st Division Huddersfield Town to a 0-0 draw attracting an all time Bootham Crescent attendance of 28,123. They put up a tremendous performance in the replay before losing 2-1 in front of a crowd of 58,066. In the three previous rounds City had beaten Coventry City, West Bromwich Albion and Middlesbrough all at home with steadily increasing crowds of 13,917, 18,795 and 23,860. Centre Forward Reg Baines re-joined the club for a third spell and scored 23 League and 5 Cup goals. He was transferred for a second time at the end of the season after scoring 93 League and Cup goals in 140 matches including eight hat-tricks, an amazing record for a part-time player. Readers of the "Milestones" and "Romance of the Cup" notes in the programme will no doubt be fascinated by the pride they demonstrate in our fledgling football club.
