About this match programme

By Richard Snowball After the end of the war, Football League crowds boomed and York's average for the season 1947-48 rose to 9,006. The attendance for this local derby with Hull City was 14,125 and the game ended 22. City who had started the season well, and were unbeaten and top of the League after six matches, eventually finished just below halfway. Later in the season in the match against New Brighton local player Jack Pinder played his last senior game for the club having made over 400 appearances. He had captained England schoolboys in 1927, and played for City since 1932 playing for the club throughout the war years, a real stalwart. Goalkeeper Peter Pickering was sold to Chelsea at the end of this season for £6,750, a large amount, and said to be the second highest for a 'keeper at that time. During this 1947-48 season he had saved seven penalties during a three month period. It is interesting from reading the programme club notes that crowd behaviour was becoming a problem and the F.A. were perturbed that it would bring the game into disrepute. It appears that nothing changes then.
