About this match programme
By Richard Snowball This programme is from York City’s last season in the Midland League. At the end of the season, the club again applied for membership of the Football League and on the June 3, 1929, at our fourth attempt, we were elected, taking the place of Ashington. After four seasons consolidating in the Midland League, York then had three seasons of top half finishes and were elected at the expense of League winners Mansfield Town, due in part to our accessibility for visiting teams with our central rail links. This match against Lincoln City Reserves also marked another feat, that of centre forward Jimmy Cowie scoring his 50th goal of the season in a 4-3 victory. He went on to score 50 League goals and 6 Cup goals in a total of 56 games, a remarkable feat. This is still a York City record and not likely to be beaten. During this season he scored 6 goals in a match twice with a 5 and two 4's in others. A Scotsman of stocky build, he still managed to score many goals with his head due to his dourness. In the 1920's matches tended to be high scoring as can be seen by City's record during this season scoring 106 and conceding 99 goals.
