About this match programme
By Richard Snowball Following their relegation from Division Three the previous season, York found life difficult back in Division Four in the 1967-68 season. Coming into their F.A. Cup 2nd Round match with Middlesbrough, who had also suffered relegation from Division Two to Three, York had lost eight successive League matches. However, in the F.A. Cup 1st Round they had managed to see off non-league Morecambe at the third attempt drawing 0-0 at home, 1-1 away and winning 1-0 in the second replay played at Maine Road Manchester. The first game at Ayresome Park had finished in a 1-1 draw, Andy Provan scoring York's goal in front of 20,573 spectators. Everything was set up for another close match in the replay at Bootham Crescent on January 11, 1967, and so it turned out with a 0-0 draw after extra time. The attendance was a creditable 14,531, which was over 12,000 more than York's last home League match on December 31, 1966. The second replay was played a week later at St. James Park, Newcastle and Middlesbrough ran out 4-1 victors with another good attendance of 21,347. In the League York had another poor season finishing third from the bottom and having to apply for re-election which they achieved with 45 votes out of 48. By a quirk of Cup draws, as so often happens, York had played Middlesbrough earlier in the season in the Football League Cup, drawing 0-0 away and winning the replay 2-1, so in Cup matches overall honours were even.
