About this match programme

By Neil Rank Not only was 1929-30 York City’s first season in the Football League, the FA Cup provided the highlight as the club reached the third round of the competition for the first time. On January 11, 1930, City travelled to then-First Division giants Newcastle United and forced a 1-1 draw (scorer Wally Gardner, crowd 38,674). This match programme was published for the replay four days later. Gates were closed an hour before kick off, and a new record crowd (for Fulfordgate) of 12,583 saw a "titanic" battle with Newcastle winning 2-1, after City had taken the lead through Sam Evans. This was the first time City had met First Division (now Premiership) opposition.
