About this match programme

By Richard Snowball In the 1983/84 season York City were flying high at the top of Division Four and coming into the match played on the February 18, 1984, they had lost only one of their previous 11 matches, drawing one and winning nine. They continued their wonderful form with a convincing 3-0 victory with goals from Keith Walwyn, Brian Pollard, from a penalty, and John Byrne in front of a crowd of 3,941. At the end of the season they were Division Four champions and became the first club to achieve more than 100 points (the three points for a win had only been in force for three seasons). Bootham Crescent was again a fortress and they had an identical record to the previous season, winning 18, drawing 4 and losing only once. During this magnificent season they were never out of the top two and after they went top at the end of October they were never headed and by the end of the season they were 16 points clear of the second club. The average Bootham Crescent attendance of 5,008 was more than 1,750 higher than the previous season, and the biggest for eight years. Records set included most wins (31), most away wins (13) and most goals (96). Including Cup competitions they scored exactly 100 goals with John Byrne top scorer with 28 closely followed by Keith Walwyn on 25.
