About this match programme

By Richard Snowball This programme is the for the 6th Round of the 1954-55 F.A.Cup when York City were drawn away to Notts County who were eighth in Division 2 at the time. On the run to this stage, City had only been drawn at home twice, but that did not seem to worry the team, their exploits away from home earning them the title "The Happy Wanderers". It was going to be another difficult task for York as Notts Co. had beaten Middlesbrough, Sheffield Wednesday and Chelsea in the previous three rounds. An all-ticket crowd of 47,301 watched at keenly fought match in which defences held firm until the 77 minute, when a Billy Hughes free kick was helped on by Sid Storey and the ball fell to Arthur Bottom who does not miss that sort chance. It was Bottom's 31st goal of the season, 7 of which had been scored on the cup run. York's achievement of reaching the semi final of the F.A.Cup bettered their previous 6th Round appearance in 1938 when they lost to Huddersfield Town after a replay. For a club that had only gained Football League status in 1929 this was a tremendous feat and not bettered by any other Division 3 teams.
