By Richard Snowball Coming into the match with Notts County, York City had won 11 of their previous 13 matches, losing only once, and were on a tremendous run of form. During this period they won seven consecutive matches, a club record, culminating with a 7-1 home win over Chesterfield on Boxing Day, 1964 (they were held to a 1-1 draw two days later in the return fixture at Chesterfield). Before the Notts County match, York were in second place in Division Four, two points behind leaders Tranmere Rovers and two points ahead of Brighton who were fourth. York put on another strong performance against their mid-table opponents and ran out winners by 2-1 with goals from Dennis Walker with a penalty and one from Billy Rudd. The match was watched by a crowd of 6,188. York City went on to achieve promotion finishing third, one points behind champions Brighton, and scoring an impressive 91 goals in the process. They won 20 of their 23 home matches, another club record, winning the last fourteen. Paul Aimson, who York had signed at the beginning of the season from Manchester City, finished top goal scorer with 26 League and 4 Cup goals and the average home attendance was 7,185, over 3,000 more than the previous season.
