About this match programme
By Richard Snowball Manager Tom Johnson was slowly turning York City's fortunes round with a mid table finish in Season 1969-70, following four seasons of bottom four finishes. Coming towards the end of season 1970-71 York were in third position In Division Four with opponents Oldham Athletic in fourth place, both on 53 points. On April 19, 1971, a crowd of 14,321 packed into Bootham Crescent for what was expected to be close and exciting game. York had not been beaten at home since January 31, 1970, a run of 36 League and Cup matches without defeat, a club record. However York supporters were disappointed and the run came to an end with Oldham running out victors by 1-0. The defeat also brought to an end a run of 16 home and away League matches without defeat, with 10 wins and 6 draws, which had lifted York into third in the League. This again was a new club record. Despite this defeat, York finished fourth in the League with 56 points and gained promotion to Division Three along with Notts County, Bournemouth and Oldham. Paul Aimson finished the season as top goalscorer with 26 League and 5 Cup goals. In mid season Phil Boyer had been transferred to Bournemouth for a then club record fee of £20,000.
