About this match programme
By Richard Snowball Six matches from the end of the 1960-61 season, York City were still hanging on to the fourth promotion place in Division Four, but Bradford Park Avenue were only two points behind with two games in hand. The match on April 8, 1961 was a difficult looking fixture against league leaders Peterborough United. Peterborough were in their first season in Division Four having deservedly been elected into the Football League after winning the Midland League six seasons on the trot. A crowd of 11,768 turned out to watch the match, but unfortunately York lost 1-0. This left their promotion push more difficult because of the five matches remaining four were away from home. As mentioned in the programme notes long serving club secretary, Mr G. W. (Billy) Sherrington, retired after giving the club great service for 37 years going back to the formation of the club in 1922. He had held several positions within the club during that time and on his retirement he was made the first Vice-President of York City.
