About this match programme

By Neil Rank Although this was their first season as a Football League club, York City appeared in the fourth qualifying round of the FA Cup. It was to be the last time they were to play at this stage of the competition until 2004-05, when they were relegated to the Football Conference. City won this game at Scarborough 3-1 with goals from Bottrill (2) and Jimmy Cowie. The attendance was 8,089. Interestingly, Reg Stockhill, who was City's youngest ever player, and scored City's first ever league goal, played in this game, his only other appearance of the season. Ironically, he was to join Scarborough the next season, after playing for City in the opening game of the 1930-31 season, before being snapped up by Arsenal in 1931. The programme contains little narrative about City; indeed only one short paragraph on page 7.
