After the previous manager John Bird had brought in Nigel Pepper, Jon McCarthy, Dean Kiely and Paul Stancliffe, the rebuilding continued under John Ward who signed Gary Swann from Preston and paid £50,000 for Paul Barnes from Stoke City before the opening game of the 1992-93 season. Things started well and York City won the first four games of the season, something the club had never done before, with Paul Barnes scoring in the first three of these. Coming into their match with Scunthorpe United on February 27, 1993, York were
