About this match programme
By Richard Snowball Having disposed of Division Two side Middlesbrough in the 2nd round of the Football League Cup with a tremendous 2-1 win in the replay at Ayresome Park, York City were drawn away in the 3rd round to Sheffield United. United were riding high at the top of Division One. They had lost their first match of the season only three days earlier when losing 2-0 to Manchester United at Old Trafford. Back in Division Three, having gained promotion the previous season, York had made a steady start, picking up 10 points from the opening 10 games whilst beating Darlington and Middlesbrough in the League Cup. As against Middlesbrough, York true to their old cup fighting traditions, put up another plucky performance against their high flying opponents before losing 3-2 in front of a crowd of 29,828. York's goalscorers were central defenders Barry Swallow and Chris Topping. It is interesting reading the programme notes how well thought of York City were at the time, with reference to their Cup record over the years, and also a mention of our own Arthur Bottom, who of course York had signed from Sheffield United in August 1954.
