About this match programme

By Richard Snowball In August 1946, the Football League programme recommenced after the end of the war. York finished in the lower half of the table in a season that was disrupted by the harsh winter and City did not play a match between 1st February and 22nd March, 1947. This resulted in the season being extended into June, with York playing nine matches in the month of May. One of the goals in this match against Stockport Co. was scored by Alf Patrick who was making his debut. He went on to score 117 goals in 241 appearance over the next seven seasons, becoming a club legend and writing himself into the record books, when two years later he scored five goals in a 6-1 win over Rotherham United, who were top of the league at the time. Two Polish Army players appeared for City in this game, goalkeeper Edouard Wojtczak and winger Eryk Kubicki. In the programme notes it is interesting to read that the second half of this match was to be broadcast live on the forces network and the BBC Light Programme, with commentary by Kenneth Wolstenholme, who went on to have a long career as a sports commentator on BBC radio and television.
