About this match programme

By Richard Snowball After away ties in the previous three rounds, York City were drawn at home in the 1954-55 F.A.Cup 5th Round to 1st Division giants Tottenham Hotspur. The match was designated all tickets with crowd of 21,000 packed into Bootham Crescent. On a difficult pitch, which had been cleared of snow in morning by fans, York turned on another magnificent performance to outplay a Spurs side that contained ten international players. Tottenham scored first after only 11 minutes but York did not let that upset them and played some superb football to score three well worked goals, one a glorious header from just inside the penalty area by Norman Wilkinson who had a wonderful game, but it was the all round team performance that won the match. The goalscorers were Wilkinson with two and Fenton the other in a memorable 3-1 victory. All the national newspaper acclaimed York's performance. Alf Ramsey who played at right back and later became the 1966 England World Cup winning manager had to accept that York fully deserved to win.
