About this match programme
By Richard Snowball York were having a tremendous 1964-65 season under manager Tom Lockie and on Friday evening, March 26, 1965, they had a top of the table clash with Tranmere Rovers. Both clubs were joint top of the league on 52 points, with Tranmere edging it on goal average, and York having played two games more. Two months earlier Tranmere had won the reverse fixture 2-1 in front of a crowd of 13,035. A similarly-sized attendance turned up at Bootham Crescent, 13,444, for this eagerly awaited match. York had won all of their home match since October 24, 1964, a run of 10 games, and the York fans were not disappointed as York turned on a wonderful display of football and won the game 4-0. The player featured in the pen picture in the programme, Derek Weddle, scored a hat-trick with full back Gerry Baker scoring the other. York went on to gain promotion by finishing third, only one point behind champions Brighton & Hove Albion, and Tranmere finished fifth missing out on promotion by one point, so this result proved crucial to both sides. York also won their last three home games to extend their winning run to 14. New signing at the beginning of the season Paul Aimson finished top League scorer with 26 out of the 91 scored and added four more in FA Cup matches.
