Having just missed out on promotion the previous season when they finished fifth (top four promoted), York City were again in with a chance in season 1961-62 going into the final four matches.

Before this featured game against Workington played on Good Friday, York were fourth in the final promotion place, with Workington one place and one point behind, so a close game was expected.

In the event York ran out comfortable 4-0 winners with Jimmy Weir scoring his second hat-trick of the season. The season's largest league crowd of 9,767 watched the match.

That left two more Easter away matches to play, Stockport on Easter Saturday, and the return game at Workington on Easter Monday, followed by Aldershot at home on the final Saturday.

The results did not go well in the first two losing 1-2 and drawing 0-0, but they still only had to beat Aldershot in the last game to ensure promotion.

Unfortunately they could not manage to do this losing 1-0, thus missing out on promotion by two points to Carlisle United. During March 1962 Accrington Stanley withdrew from the League with financial problems and City's 1-0 victory over them was expunged from the records, but whether this affected the promotion places noone will ever know.

York had a good run in to Football League Cup beating Bristol City, Leicester City, Watford and Bournemouth before losing out to Rochdale in the quarter finals.

Jimmy Weir was top scorer with 28 League and 1 Cup goal, and in just over two seasons with the club he scored 39 goals in 95 League and Cup matches.
