About this match programme
For York City, the 1926-27 season could be considered the club’s most successful before it joined the Football League. City finished 6th in the Midland Counties Football League, scoring 96 goals in their 38 fixtures, and reaching the second round of the FA Cup (they lost 2-1 away to second division Grimsby Town in what was City’s first meeting with a Football League club). This match programme was published for the FA Cup’s first round tie, at home to Worksop Town. The date of this programme (December 1, 1926) is revealing in itself. The cup match was scheduled for November 27 but the game was abandoned after 70 minutes with the score locked at 1-1, with City’s goal scored by Charlie Flood. The game was re-arranged for the following Wednesday and City won 4-1 with goals from Merritt (2), Ranby and Harvey. The attendance was 2,931.
