our story When I first started making jewellery I knew I wanted it to be different. It had to stand out from the crowd, but also be elegant. This disarmingly simple rule still runs through everything we do. From design fundamentals, to our studio, to packaging beauty and elegance are at the heart of them all. There are times when I hear myself asking of a design ‘Yes, but is it elegant?’. If I have to ask, I already know the answer!

I love jewellery that makes a statement. The challenge I face is to bring bold and elegant together. I believe our pieces successfully combine the two. I launched my first collection in early 2015. It was very much about colour, combined with strong geometric shapes inspired by the Art Deco period. One journalist likened me to a time traveller from the 70s designing jewellery for flappers. I thought that rather apt. The collection attracted a huge amount of support from the fashion press. That support has continued. Recently, Lucinda Chambers credited us with “nailing the jewellery
brief and bringing… endless options for adding personality to any look”. The LBD collection is very personal, featuring more black and neutral colour combinations. In pushing further, it takes Toolally to a new and exciting place. It’s a collection very much centred around shape and form. Toolally LBDs are bigger, bolder and unapologetically glamorous.
O u r I n s p i r at i o n Inspiration arrives when I least expect it. It might come while I’m doodling on a train or watching a film. And I always keep a sketch pad by my bed just in case! Inspiration may come from our customers, who sometimes ask me to create something from the vaguest of briefs. Team Toolally are lucky enough to work in Yorkshire on a country estate where we are surrounded by the most vibrant and colourful wildlife. Our studio lies in the Lancashire hills and I always think that if a workshop is aesthetically pleasing then it makes for a nicer, more productive place to create. If we are happy making the pieces you see, then the wearer will be happy too. Our Birds Collection was born here along with everything else we make. Brimham Rocks near Harrogate inspired pieces from the Classic Collection and Yorkshire born sculptor Barbara Hepworth’s use of circles and squares influenced a design which is still sold at her award-winning gallery near Wakefield. The Art Deco period has always interested me as it was a time when style was evident just about everywhere. Many of our pieces take their cues from that golden era but always with a Toolally twist. Wassily Kandinsky was the first artist to introduce pure, abstract art and many of his bold shapes and colours have also made a lasting impression on us. For those who know me, I am not one to stand still in a design sense (or any other sense for that matter). I am always striving to go further and be bolder. And I think the LBDs beautifully achieve this.

statement earrings, which was a weighty pulling on the lobe and a certain amount of pain. Thankfully, those days are as distant as the 1980s themselves. Our delicately elegant structures are countered by the highest quality fastenings. We only use sterling silver or 22 carat gold vermeil fastenings and all post earrings are secured with bullet backs for strength, reassurance and comfort. Today, every piece of Toolally jewellery continues to be designed, cut and hand finished in our beautiful studio in Barnoldswick, surrounded by the Yorkshire and Lancashire hills. It’s from here that we create the perfect, quiet storm.
