Métis Appreciation Dinner A Success

he first ever Métis Appreciation Dinner, held at the ‘Best Western Inn On The Bay’ this past April, was an unqualified success. Invitees were all past and present council members, as well as dedicated volunteers. Special music was presented by Piyak Ootihi (One Heart) Métis Drummers. Dinner speakers were MNO President Gary Lipinski, MNO Manager Of Community Relations Hank Rowlinson and MNO Land, Resources and Communications Director Melanie Paradis. The unique event was planned and organized by Peter Coture, as well as GLM Office Coordinator, Melanie Hamilton. A good time was had by all, with many stories about the humble origins of the modern Métis of Owen Sound and area being shared. Many attendees commented on how strong and in how brief a time, the Metis identity has been re-established in this area.

itizens, please plan to attend a meeting with Louise Goulding, our regional Captain-Of-The-Hunt, who will address and update your questions and concerns with regard to growing confusion over Métis Nation of Ontario/Ministry of Natural Resources relations, as well as MNO harvesting card and registry issues. Some of the confusion surrounds the present system for issuing and renewing both citizen and harvest cards.

Office Co-ordinator Steps Down
M
elanie Hamilton, the first ever office coordinator for Great Lakes Métis Council is wished well, as she leaves us to take on new employment. Our council and community owe a debt of gratitude to Melanie for her service over the past few challenging months and we wish her the very best in all new ventures.
Council Vacancy To Be Filled

n emergency council meeting in May saw Ray Racicot step down as president, to apply as Office Co-ordinator. Chair Jeff Wilson is interim president, leaving one council position open. Council must receive letters of intent before July 14th and council will appoint a new councillor at a meeting July 25th. Candidates must meet all requirements of the MNO electoral code. The successful candidate will hold office until next community election. Call 519-370-0435 for details. The Grey Owen Sound Métis are now officially known as the Great Lakes Métis, after the community vote at the annual community meeting in April. Ray Racicot was interviewed by MNO and hired as the new office co-ordinator, so come out and encourage him, as he takes on new challenges. DURHAM CONSERVATION AREA JULY 17, 2010
reat Lakes Métis Council is holding a Summer Rendezvous on July 17th at Durham Saugeen Conservation Park. We hope this event will eventually become an annual one, so your participation is vital. To access the main gate: At the top of the hill in Durham, turn east onto historic Durham Road (Grey Rd. 27) and drive 1.6 km (1 mile) to the park entrance. The park entry fee is $10.00 per carload OR $3.50 for adults, 2.00 for children. Entrance fee is waived for those who have entered the canoe races and those with fish fry tickets, also for “staff”. At 11:00AM, a Grand Entry will proceed to the picnic area over the dam at the McGowan Falls south access. The rest of the day is full of activities and entertainment, also. Bring lawn chairs. The youth will be featuring a barbecue at noon, or bring a picnic lunch. At 1:00PM, canoe races will be held on the Saugeen River . For insurance purposes, you need to be preregistered by July 9th. Enter a canoe for cash prizes of $100, $50 and $25. To register, call 519-3725519. Cost is $15.00 to enter your canoe, which includes a ticket for the fish dinner. Other afternoon entertainment will include a horseshoe tournament, bingo games, children
and youth activities, 10 vendors’ tables, penny table, fishing, swimming, great walking trails, horse and buggy rides, music jamboree (bring your instrument or come in good voice). It is a good idea to bring lawn chairs. A raffle for a kayak, including paddle and life jacket is another really great opportunity. Tickets are $5.00, and the draw will take place at the fish fry. Raffle tickets may be purchased until the time of the drawing. The Fish Fry will take centre stage from 5:00PM-7:00PM. Tickets are $10 per person (in advance only). Call the Great Lakes Métis office (519370-0435), or call 519-369-6143 or see any Great Lakes Métis Councillor to reserve tickets to be picked up at the gate. We will hold tickets in reserve, but cannot sell them the day of the Rendezvous, as we need to know how much fish to fry! Get your ticket early, as only 200 will be sold. Evening brings a campfire, with more music, drumming, etc. Campsites are available if you wish to stay over night or for the weekend. Help us celebrate the Year of the Métis!
