BLOSSOM

From enduring traditions to modern milestones, she captures the essence of Toorak College.
DIRECTOR’S NOTES
It has been a great honour to craft a performance that commemorates Toorak College’s 150th anniversary. The task of celebrating such a significant milestone through a production was initially daunting, however, diving into our school’s rich history and uncovering remarkable stories felt like exploring a treasure trove. The creative team relished the journey of finding archival documents and revealing intriguing stories and facts to share with you tonight.
Our dedicated team has felt truly privileged to contribute to this milestone in the school’s history. We began with the question of how best to mark 150 years and decided to celebrate Toorak College’s legacy through a blend of dance, drama, music and physical theatre. We aimed to capture the essence of what makes Toorak College strong and enduring by identifying five core elements that have been prominent throughout the school’s history: Longevity, Pride, Growth, Resilience and Spirit. We then connected these elements to iconic symbols within the school and examined historical contexts both globally and locally.
Tonight’s performance is a tribute to the school, honouring the community that has been shaped over the years and continues to thrive. It reflects the spirit and deep affection that many have for Toorak College.
We hope you enjoy the show.

ACT 1
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF COUNTRY
by Jonathan Hill
‘I have been given the responsibility and the privilege of passing on the ancient stories, the art tradition, the love and care for the environment and the strong bonds of our proud people. In the Kunwinjku language of Arnhem Land, ‘Kundenge bok’ means ‘footsteps’, and the idea of following in my grandfather’s footsteps is very dear to my heart. I’m going to keep on with my painting in the way that he taught me. It gives me comfort to know that he and my past will be reflected in my paintings.’

COLLEGIANS
Composed by Marion Sinclair, arr. by Katriona Newman
They of the school before us now tread the wider ways Their thoughts to her returning, who ordered once their days Tho’ far the road they followed yet ever year by year O’er field and court and Cloister, they call to those who hear
We now the torch upraising do pledge o’ school that we Will guard the flame they gave us, for others yet to be; And in our hearts your spirit will live as time rolls by A song whose echoes fade not, a truth that cannot die.
SPIRIT OF TOORAK
Composed by Geoff Jones, arr. by Katriona Newman
We’ve got Spirit we’ve got pride
We’ll take all victories in our stride Determination sees us through Toorak girls strong and true
We’re the girls with ‘corp d’esprit’ We compete with loyalty We play our sports by the sea With honour integrity
Cerutty, Douglas, Hamilton, Pye, Mayfield, Tripp See them reach the sky! All the houses come together To form a team so bold To represent Toorak College Red, Blue and Gold!
We’ve got Spirit we’ve got pride We’ll take all victories in our stride Determination sees us through Toorak girls strong and true
LYRICS
BRICK BY BRICK
by Miss Amalia Foy (TC 2019) and Mr Edward Fairlie
On a hill beside by the ocean, where the daisies face the sun
There is a spirit blowing through the countryside
A place of inspiration and possibility, and freedom for young minds to grow and thrive
So we built it brick by brick rising proudly by the bay And we keep on building higher everyday
Shout it from the hilltop this is who we are
We’re courageous and we’ll always raise the bar
Shout it from the tower ring the bell out loud
We’re red and blue and gold and we are proud
Now the new is in the making, our adventure has begun And there’s a bond that we all share within these walls We come here from all over, no two of us the same But we’ll be there for one another when we fall
‘Cause we built it brick by brick, see the ivy from afar And we stand as one beneath the guiding star
Shout it from the hilltop this is who we are
We’re courageous and we’ll always raise the bar Shout it from the tower ring the bell out loud
Collegians new and old, adventurous and bold
We’re red and blue and gold and Toorak proud
