Very few cultural expressions carry as many layers of history and meaning as food. Indeed, with its unique evocative power and sensorial attraction, quality cuisine is often able to condense, in one glorious bite, the spirit of a whole culture and time. In this connection, the meteoric rise of Spanish cuisine to the top ranks of international gastronomy is inextricably linked to a century-old tradition of first rate ingredients, visionary work of pioneers such as Juan María Arzak, and the creative explosion following Spain’s return to democracy. All this and much more will be featured in TAPAS, a fascinating show on food and design, premiering in November in Miami, before travelling to Washington DC in early 2014. The immensely popular Spanish-American Chef, José Andrés, has contributed his extensive experience to the exhibition, working closely with curator Juli Capella. Lectures, tastings and live presentations will accompany the show’s display of culinary objects, instruments and graphics. TAPAS will be one of the highlights of our ongoing program of events celebrating the 500th Anniversary of Florida. Also in November, Spain will be under the spotlight at the Miami Book Fair International. The Florida commemorations will have a reflection on the West Coast with the 300th Anniversary of the birth of Fray Junípero Serra, the Spanish friar who created the California Mission System, with a magnificent show at the Huntington Library. Up in Canada, Spanish culture is also blooming. In September, Young Architects of Spain will bid farewell to its North American tour in Toronto. In October, Ottawa will host its 5th edition of the Festival of New Spanish Cinema, now an annual milestone in the cultural agenda of the city. All through North America’s gorgeous fall season, Spanish culture will leave its mark in a variety of disciplines. Loads of more information awaits you in the pages of this catalog. Enjoy!

TAPAS. SPANISH DESIGN FOR FOOD Spanish cuisine is enjoying a prosperous period: in 2013 El Celler de Can Roca was named the best restaurant in the world. It had already been preceded, though, on five occasions by fellow Spanish eatery elBulli, headed by Ferran Adrià, cited by Time magazine in 2004 as one of the 10 most creative figures in the world. In parallel, Spain boasts a wealth of esteemed industrial, graphic and interior designers who are firmly committed to food and drink. If we think about it closely, without design then food would simply be sustenance. And most likely very boring. Design has played a key role in this task of embellishing food, and has also created the devices needed to raise crops, hunt and fish. Design has also provided us with pots and pans to cook and the cutlery and crockery that allows us to eat in comfort. Spanish culture has contributed important and intriguing creations in this field, and has over recent years made serious efforts to lead the way. A number of high level cuisine techniques are Spanish creations, such as whipping siphons, flavoured air, esterification, the Roner... And there has also been a revolution in the kitchen: chefs have invited designers in to help create the right vessels for each recipe. While the Nouvelle Cuisine tradition employed huge, white, circular plates with a wide range of presentational forms, Spain has given birth to a distinctive and creative synergy in which the most celebrated chefs have designed each serving dish to suit an individual recipe. Irregular shapes, precious metal trays, natural moulds, pressed glass,

polished stones, printed trays, wine glasses, labels, sauce pipettes, are all used for the sake of an extraordinary dish. The exhibition organised by Acción Cultural Española (AC/E) TAPAS. Spanish Design for Food presents this thrilling world of collaboration between two creative disciplines on the rise in Spain: design and gastronomy. The exhibition also reviews a number of traditional icons of food and drink culture in Spain -- a country with a dietary culture framed by the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, and a design culture that combines craftsmanship, artistic influence, ingenuity and organic color. Spain boasts three superlative drinking vessels: the “bota” wineskin, which so delighted Ernest Hemingway; the “botijo” flagon, a kind of portable fridge, and the “porrón” flask, which disgusted George Orwell, reminding him of a hospital bed pan. The leathern “bota”, the earthenware “botijo” and the glass “porrón”: three utensils designed to share a drink hygienically without coming into contact with the mouth, to be passed round between friends while enjoying some tapas. The title of the exhibition is a homage to an informal, varied and social way of eating. And the word “tapa”, which also means “lid”, is derived from the habit of covering a wine glass with a slice of bread or cured meat as an accompaniment. Some say that it was a Spanish king who ordered innkeepers to serve a little food so as to prevent patrons from drinking alcohol on an empty stomach, while according to others the “tapa” was meant to keep dust or insects out of the glass. The most likely explanation, though, is that it was a ruse by innkeepers to encourage wine consumption. One master chef and tapas ambassador in the United States is José Andrés, who has, for the past 21 years, been championing this healthy and tasty way of eating in a fun context. He is a great promoter of Spanish design, upholding a creative, pioneering approach in his restaurants.

TAPAS is divided into three sections: Kitchen, Table and Food. The first of these presents devices which assist in cooking, from a spiked hotplate to cook food on its side, to Lékué silicone products for healthy cooking. The Table section features an explosion of serving dishes in a whole range of materials, sizes and shapes, designed to individualize and harmonize with the recipes of leading chefs. Along with cutlery, glassware and the world’s best oil dispenser, designed by Rafael Marquina in 1961. When he was a boy his mother told him off for staining the tablecloth with oil, as traditional dispensers would tend to drip, and were easily knocked over. And so, as an adult, he decided to create the perfect specimen. He drew his inspiration from the world of chemistry, using Pyrex glass to create his popular drip-free oil dispenser. It is easy to refill thanks to its funnelled form, highly stable, and after use the oil is fed back into the container via a small opening, which also allows air to enter when pouring. It has been copied and distributed worldwide. This section also features more ironic and symbolic objects, jokes and rarities, as there is also room at table for more communicative and evocative values, whereas in the kitchen functionality reigns supreme. Curro Claret has created a bread slicer which channels the surplus crumbs directly outside to feed the birds.
Food can, though, also be design. As in the case of the anchovy-filled olive so often eaten with an aperitif, or the famous Chupa-Chups lollipop, a sweet on a stick which keeps your fingers from getting sticky, invented in Spain in 1959 and featured in the MoMA collection. Food design likewise includes new and imaginative presentations for chocolates. And in particular the designs of Martí Guixé, such as Techno-tapas, Sponsored Food or cakes using coloured proportions to reveal their composition. Guixé has himself also produced a bespoke contribution for the exhibition: the Liquid Menu. Lastly, artist Antoni Miralda has created a Photocall to share culinary recipes.

The exhibition includes an audiovisual presentation showing a selection of restaurant interiors, various architectural designs for Spanish wineries courtesy of such names as Gehry, Hadid and Moneo, and a selection of a hundred wine bottles which stand out for their daring and engaging modern labels.

Overall, more than 200 pieces covering a huge range of types, styles and materials. The broadest of spectrums, Spanish ingenuity in the form of a selection of “tapas” to abet one of the most commonplace but also symbolic and sensual acts which human beings perform every day: eating.

In this monthly series, we examine Muslim, Jewish and Christian ideas in Spain’s medieval art, literature and gastronomy. First, translator Peter Cole investigates the hybrid literary culture that flourished in Iberia and the origins of the European poetry. In the second series, Jerrilyn Dodds, consultant at the Met, explores the interactions of the three groups in regards to hostility, acculturation, and the most fruitful levels of ambivalence. In the final discussion, Yale professor Paul Freedman explains food as a meeting ground for the three major religions with a demonstration by the restaurant La Vara, whose chef was voted 2012 Chef of the Year.

To celebrate the 300th anniversary of the birth of Brother Junípero Serra, this exhibition delves into the realms of early Californian history: from the Early Modern Catholic world of Serra’s Spanish birth, to the influence of Indian culture at the center of the influential priest’s Mexican and Californian missions, and the competing legacies that surfaced from his missions. The exhibit features rare items such as maps and manuscripts from the 1500s, some of the earliest known photographs of California missions and Serra’s personal travel diary and other belongings. Also on view at the Museum of Monterey, the last of four exhibitions regarding the Missions of California which have taken place in Monterey during 2013.

Spanish Sojourns is the first museum exhibition dedicated to the Spanish paintings of Robert Henri (1865-1929), one of the most influential American artists of the early 20th century. Spain and its people held a particular fascination for Henri, who was attracted to the nation’s sunny climate, ancient culture and spirited citizens. His subjects include a wide range of cultural figures including singers, dancers, bullfighters, and gypsies. The exhibition examines over 40 of Henri’s Spanish paintings in a variety of contexts–artistic, cultural, and historical–laying the groundwork for a fuller understanding of this major body of work by one of the most significant American artists of his time.

Jaque’s site-specific installation at REDCAT gathers a selection of domestic material elements, taken from recent models of collective living, to propose a makeshift political arena where personal and social differences are able to be confronted and dissolved. Young Architects from Spain bids farewell to its successful North American tour with a final stop in Toronto. The YAS exhibit presents the designs, selected through a public competition open to all Spanish architects under 40, and demonstrates the extraordinatory skills and promise of the next generation. More than 700 submitted projects were reviewed and selected by an international jury composed of prestigious architects Alberto Campo Baeza and Manuel Blanco and architecture critics Kenneth Frampton and Juhani Pallasma. THE GOLDEN AGE OF SPANISH HORROR FILMS: 1967-1976
In order to celebrate Halloween, Film critic Javier Pulido screens Spanish horror movies that cross international borders and appeal to film lovers everywhere. Created in 1965, Profilmes was a Barcelona-based film production company that specialized in horror films. In 1972, they were the most important company of the genre in Spain, producing an unprecedented number of successful horror films where names such as Paul Naschy, Amando Ossorio, Carlos Aured, Jess Franco and Narciso Ibáñez Serrador gained international recognition.

A few years ago, when American readers discovered David Aja’s new, sleeper hit, Immortal Iron Fist, it was reasonable for them to conclude that the hot artist making his mark in its pages was the latest in a long line of great American cartoonists. After all, the Valladolid resident sounds international enough to warrant confusion. Nowadays, everyone knows that Aja– star of the moment thanks to his work on Marvel’s Hawkeye, which has earned him two distinctions as best artist and best cover artist at the prestigious Eisner Awards– is a Spaniard. He and other countrymen, like Marcos Martín- whose exciting recent comic, The Private Eye, is coauthored by celebrity writer Brian K. Vaughan (Lost, Under the Dome)- and Emma Ríos– who debuts her female revenge western Pretty Deadly this Autumn, written by Kelly Sue DeConnick– are on the frontline of a veritable Armada Española invading the pages of the 21st Century American comic book scene.
The door was first opened 20 years ago by Carlos Pacheco. A Cádiz native, who arrived at Marvel in the mid-Nineties, Pacheco was armed with an exhaustive knowledge of American comics, gleaned from translations of superhero serials popular in Spain since the early 70s. Though Pacheco was a foreigner, he had so completely absorbed the intricacies of the American tradition that he quickly became a fan favorite, drawing characters as iconic as the X-Men, The Avengers, The Fantastic Four, and Superman. A wealth of Spanish artists followed suit, storming Marvel and DC Comics, such as, among others, Salvador Larroca, Pasqual Ferry, Kano, Javier Pulido. The artistic migration began under the loomings of a crumbling comic industry. From the Forties until the Eighties, Spain, like

most of the Western countries, had a newsstand based industry, peddling cheap adventure and humor magazines aimed at children. With the advent of Spanish democracy, a rush of “adult” titles entered the scene, flooding an unprepared market. The industry experienced a short boom, followed by a swift, debilitating bust. Following the lead of pioneers like Pacheco, most artists began looking for greener pastures in the still healthy American and French industries. For some artists, like the renowned Juan Díaz Canales and Juanjo Guarnido, whose bestselling and Eisner-winning noir-cum-funny-animals Blacksad has been translated from French into English, French success translated into American success.
With the beginning of the 21st century also came the emergence of a new Spanish comic industry. Based on the concept of the graphic novel, publishers geared comics towards mature audiences, selling their volumes in bookstores rather than newsstands. The cartoonist became an author, capable of tackling subjects previously considered anathema for light-hearted serials, such as memoir, social critique, illness, history, emotion, and even politics. International hits like Maus by Art Spiegelman and Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi hoisted a great deal of public recognition onto the graphic novel, cementing it as a kind of emergent literature. Two works published in 2007 sealed the success of the uniquely Spanish graphic novel: The first was Arrugas (Wrinkles) by Paco Roca, an unexpected bestseller centered around a group of senior citizens afflicted with Alzheimer’s disease. Arrugas sold over 60,000 copies in Spain, was translated for countries as

distant as Japan (though there has yet to be an American edition), and has since been adapted into an animated movie. The second, Gallardo’s María y yo (Maria and me), a moving confession focused on the artist’s relationship with his autistic daughter, has been made into a documentary. That same year, the Spanish government established the National Prize for Comics- a move that seems to be an official acknowledgment of the graphic novel as part of the larger cultural scene. How can this vibrant new Spanish graphic novel reach American audiences? Entering a historically isolated market is a very difficult task, though not an impossible one. And very few of the best Spanish graphic novelists have ever been translated into English, Martí (Calvario Hills, The Cabbie) and Max (Bardín the Superrealist, which earned the first National Prize in 2007) being the most notable exceptions. The latter’s latest work, Vapor, is set to appear in English in 2013. Likewise, one of the best young Spanish artists, David Rubín, will bring his grandiose The Hero to America in the near future, and is currently collaborating with alternative comics star Paul Pope in a sequel to the latter’s Battling Boy. In this, he follows other Spanish artists that have teamed-up with American writers recently: Víctor Santos with Brian Azzarello in Filthy Rich and José María Ken Niimura with Joe Kelly in I Kill Giants are two of the most outstanding examples.

Other Spanish artists have chosen a more direct route, publishing their comics directly in the States. Málaga born El Torres, has had titles published by both Image and IDW, including his horror cult hit The Veil, drawn by Gabriel Hernández. El Torres has also gone on to found his own Publishing House, Amigo Cómics, explicitly to publish in the American market. Diábolo, a publisher from Madrid, distributes his books internationally in Italy, France and Germany, and has brought many contemporary Spanish visionaries, like Mauro Entrialgo, Juan Berrio, Nacho Casanova and Marcos Prior to America. The picture is not all roseate though; Lorenzo Pascual, Diábolo’s publisher, argues that “American readers have very little experience with European comics in general, and even less with Spanish,” which, in a time of economic flux and uncertainty, might lead to tenuous recognition. Furthermore, Pascual remarks, “Digital editions are getting an ever-growing share of the pie in the USA, which complicates an already overloaded market.” Pretty Deadly, Emma Ríos

But it’s precisely in such times of crisis that opportunities present themselves, opportunities Spanish authors are ready to seize. Whether it be illustrating mainstream series, drawing and inking iconic American characters, or authoring unique works published by American companies or imported directly from overseas, it is a sure thing that one year from now we’ll be seeing a lot more Spanish names in American comics.

Embracing a carnavalesque, topsy-turvy view of the world, these farcical interludes question and subvert the norms of society. First performed on the streets, this short play genre eventually became an integral part of main stage productions and royal performances.
Directed by Jose Luis Arellano, with music by David Peralto, this production is presented in collaboration with Acción Sur. The show will feature some well-known and other lesser known interludes by the masters of Spain’s Golden Age. MIRÓ: THE EXPERIENCE OF SEEING Arriving entirely from the collection of the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid, this exhibition brings together over 50 ingenious works of art by Joan Miró. On display from February to May at the Seattle Art Museum.

Mr. Oso was born Sergio de la Varga in Madrid in 1981. From a young age he has been interested in the creative universe, making drawings and seeing the world with his peculiar and imaginative eyes.
