The restaurant has proven itself at the “Wine and Food Noble Night” culinary competition organized annually in Warsaw; in its first entry in 2010 it won in all three categories! AKADEMIA SMAKU NAZWA RESTAURACJI RESTAURANT

Located in Warsaw’s center, Akademia Smaku emanates its own culinary “education” informing guests on what excellent Polish cuisine is all about. The name which translates to “academy of flavors” is appropriate; indeed in its impeccable interiors, one is exposed to an impressive array of Polish flavors. The menu truly delights with its high level of authenticity, quality, and freshness. Items such as the scallops with chorizo and broad beans; duck with soba pasta and seaweed salad; classical beef sirloin steak with pepper sauce, fries, and arugula; the halibut with parsnip, capers and croutons; and for dessert , cheese cake with chocolate sauce, are all excellent. TOP Warsaw

If there is a famous Polish cafe that defines history then one needs to visit. A.Blikle, in existence since 1869. Nowadays, more of a café cum brasserie, this institution which has been run by the Blikle family for five generations offers a synthesis between Polish and French cuisine. While its “café aspect” needs no introduction with its wide spectrum of offerings – desserts, famous donuts, cheesecake with raspberry, fine coffees and teas, its brasserie is demonstrating the same sense in its food offering. The mushroom soup with dumplings: the wheat and buckwheat pancakes served with salmon, caviar, or herring; duck in various recipe formulations and the St. Jacob mussels are good selections. Breakfast served all day. A.Blikle always lives up to a quality experience.

BANJANAZWA LUKA RESTAURACJI RESTAURANT

Restaurant Banja Luka, named after the wonderful city in Bosnia near Croatia, is a special place in the center of Warsaw which unites the culinary aspects of the region inhabited for centuries by Croats, Serbs, Bosnians, Muslims, and Jews. Patterned after a Balkan seaside tavern, the authentic atmosphere offers live music and a wonderful selection of wines. What arrives on the table is made by an eager-to-please kitchen staff that includes actual chefs from Serbia and Croatia. The restaurant serves not only choice of marinated, smoked and grilled meats, fish, and seafood, but also salads, and vegetarian dishes. Dishes represented by such items as Gurmańska Pleskawica, which is meat with cheese and hot paprika stuffing; or Banjalucki ćevap which is a large portion of chopped mutton wrapped in smoked bacon, are all flavor packed. A great place indeed!

CASA NAZWA PABLO RESTAURACJI RESTAURANT

Casa Pablo is redefining the idea of Spanish cuisine in Warsaw. In a non-clichéd setting - vintage, inspired, composed of objects and furniture from Spain - creative Spanish cuisine is served under the watchful eye of owner Pablo Martin Delgado. While not a traditional Spanish restaurant, dishes are prepared using Spanish techniques and products flown in from the country. Culinary creativity is reflected in items such as the homemade foie gras coated with toasted kikos, served with fig compote and raspberry pebbles or the duck breast burger served with sansho ko pepper caramelized onions, mahon cheese, arugula, raspberry ketchup and truffle mayonnaise. An outstanding bar reflects the culture of Spain, and the space exudes a warmth that appeals to a wide range of customers - couples seeking a romantic evening, business-folk, as well as those seeking a chic place to have dinner or drinks with friends.

The word brasserie implies a relaxed, upscale setting, professional service, white linen, a simple yet comprehensive menu. Brasserie Warszawska is of course more than that, and is reflective of the combined traditions of Warsaw and Paris, suffused perhaps with elements of the new European modernity. The dishes on the menu, such as the beef fillet with dauphine potatoes and spinach, emphasize simplicity; yet simultaneously reinforce the focus on quality of ingredients, methods of preparation, elegance of appearance, and heavenly flavors. The staff here is passionate about what they do; there is an implied guarantee of service and genuine hospitality. The restaurant has an outstanding bar with original-design stools, champagne and fine cocktails; there is a private room ideal for groups of 12 to 24 guests as well. Brasserie Warszawska is surely an uptick on Warsaw’s culinary map!

BUTCHERY & WINE RESTAURANT

Butchery & Wine has become the only restaurant in Poland to be awarded the Michelin Bib Gourmand, which implies good value for money and which represents a favorite of the Michelin Guides. Speaking to owner Daniel Pawelek it is abundantly clear that his objective is for Butchery & Wine to be known as a place in Warsaw’s center where guests can enjoy outstanding food from a thankfully short menu—this aspect is extremely uncommon and intelligent. Appetizers and dishes such as the roast bone marrow, a classic; seared scallops with boudin noir; Bavette steak with shallots; and cote de boeuf, are all outstanding, perhaps to be followed by dessert such as the spiced pear and apple crumble with vanilla ice-cream. A comprehensive wine list, and friendly service make Butchery & Wine a top selection!

With an open kitchen at its core, Concept 13 inspires with preparation such as the teppanyaki— a great form of Kitchen Theater, and an outstanding selection of grilled steaks and salads. All this may be accompanied by a selection from an extensive wine list. Concept13 is indeed that special idea which was once sought and now has finally come to be!

The legendary Café Bristol Café, situated in the very heart of the city, is an integral part of Le Meridien Bristol Hotel. For years a favorite meeting place for both Warsaw’s visitors and its locals, it has welcomed patrons since 1901. With interiors styled in Viennese elegance, this is the place where one can enjoy outstanding coffee and desserts from its own in-house bakery throughout the year. The menu changes with the seasons; late autumn-early winter is a time for the stuff of Polish orchards, so cakes with apples, plums and pears are outstanding, as well as there is a greater an emphasis on salads, fruits, and light meats. No surprise therefore that this place has come to be a place where social and business meetings always go well! Note: Breakfast starts at 8 am, and in December, Christmas dishes will be available for takeout.

GIOVANNI RUBINO RESATAURANT

Located diagonally across from the Presidential Palace Giovanni Rubino has become an Italian institution in its own right. Celebrating its 20th birthday in 2011, this outstanding place is where modern Mediterranean fare rooted in traditional Italian has been created by Chef Piotr Rybicki who has been at the helm of culinary affairs since it opened in 1991. This long unfaltering collaboration over the years between owner and chef has resulted in interesting variations such as Pizza Pizzaiolo with Parma ham and arugula, spaghetti with mussels, and the much-in-demand pork fillet with mushroom sauce. With a well-appointed bar which leads to a chic, semi-private chamber, great home-made desserts, a committed and friendly staff, and an endearing value-for-money ethos, Giovanni is where everyone wants to come back to! An inspired tribute to the life of Poland’s 20th century author Witold Gombrowicz, Ferdy’s derives its name from his 1937 novel, Ferdydurke. Selections such as the cold, creamy red beetroot soup with yoghurt; black tiger prawns and scallops ceviche; dried pork loin with rowan aromatized vodka; oven-roasted cod medallion served with cream of broad beans with mint, are all outstanding. Oberża Pod Czerwonym Wieprzem, or the Inn Under the Red Hog was in its historical past a restaurant for the communist party elite, where surrounded by chandeliers, portraits, and flags, once feasted the likes of Lenin, Breżnev, Fidel Castro, and Mao Tse Tung! The walls are replete with portraits of old communists, and the dishes have names such as Delicacies of the Polish People’s Republic, a selection of pate, luncheon meat, blood sausage, and kielbasa; varied pierogi “made from rationed flour”; and Baltic herring and game pate for the “Dignitaries and Bourgeoisie”. The salient fact about Lebanese cuisine is that it is truly Mediterranean, with healthful ingredients and preparations that emphasize the use of fresh ingredients. Offering a diversity of flavors--cinnamon, cardamom, cumin, and mint--one can actually get a fine sense of Lebanon’s culinary traditions here. Le Cedre is not only a place for a delicious cuisine but also which offers a virtual excursion to a resort country--a large collection of Lebanese wines, original interior design, and Arabic music in the background, all contribute immensely to the feeling! What matters here ultimately is that the food is absolutely top in its composition, immensely healthful and refreshing, and served in a traditional setting which completes this Lebanese experience.

Much of what appears on the table is what she learned from her grandmother with dishes such as the baked carp with porcini mushrooms and cream; and white sausage with honey and onion jam. With a far reaching reputation both domestically and internationally, its guest list boasts many visiting dignitaries. Ultimately what stands out at U Fukiera is the distinct philosophy that all guests here are A-list celebrities—to be fed, treated, and looked after as such!

TOMO SUSHI RESTAURANT

Tomo Sushi stands tall amongst Warsaw’s crowded culinary scene, largely due to a few unassailable features—great quality, authenticity, and an easy welcoming atmosphere. It has proven itself with creativity which is evident here at all levels. The menu has been put together with a clear thought to impress that this is no ordinary sushi place with items such as the Gyutataki, slices of raw beef served with shichimi sauce, grated daikon, fresh ginger, onions and greens; and the Shiromi Usuzukuri which is thinly sliced carpaccio of fresh white fish with lemon based ponzu sauce. The tuna steak with mustard sauce; the chicken teriyaki are all equally wonderful. The vision of Tomo’s co-owner Andrzej Pankiewicz is to impart a memorable experience; the word “Tomo” in Japanese implies friendship, and this is the place to enjoy company in the presence of outstanding culinary creations!

L’OCCITANE EN PROVENCE

Olivier Baussan, the founder of L’Occitane, has to say this about his company and the land of its inspiration, giving us an insight into why this is quickly becoming a leading brand name in the world of personal care—“The sun smiles on Provence. Its warmth makes the soil generous and the people openhearted. Its brightness is reflected in the crafts, customs and traditions that have been handed down from generation to generation. The sun, the products of the soil and a love of nature are the essence of my Provence. It is this essence I want to share with the world. It is what inspired me to create L’Occitane.” This amazing philosophy is the reason that the shelves at L’Occitane are lined with inspirational products for both women and men—fragrances, products for bath and body, skin care, and even for a great smelling home!

Autosalon24.pl offers tremendous advantages over conventional ways of buying cars, which include: • Significantly better price with dealerships competing to provide the highest discount in order to make the sale; • Clean, transparent, and secure business practices—cars are provided by official authorized car dealerships only with bank payments made directly to the dealer’s bank account; • The widest possible choice between virtually all brands of cars and motorbikes; • One stop shopping for financing, (credit, leasing) and insurance, and professional advice by autosalon24.pl consultants in identifying what’s most suitable; • Customized requirements delivered to the doorstep such as winter tires, baby seats, individual leather interior, and auto spa treatments such as scratch-proofing; • And finally lots of time saved which is perhaps the most important factor today. On occasion an identified vehicle with the best deal may in fact be available at a dealership in a distant town. In these cases autosalon24.pl would be delighted in making travel arrangements to get one there to take delivery of one’s new car, always a thrilling experience made better perhaps with a sightseeing holiday in a different city! With almost every car and model, along with a good choice of motorbikes autosalon24.pl is indeed the place to purchase a new or pre-owned vehicle. The best possible price and service is indeed just a few computer clicks with no running around and wasting time. Thank you autosalon24.pl!

Trained with the famous chef Kurt Scheller and Culinary Institute of America, she attaches great importance to her belief that kids should know what they eat, especially in today’s era of junk food. Little Chef offers the following age group classes (conducted in English, French, Polish), where groups are small and each child is given a lot of attention: Mini Chef – for kids 2.5 to 4 years, Little Chef – for ages 4 to 10; Chef Teenage - from 11 to 16 years. Parents are welcome to cook with Mini Chefs, and siblings can belong to the same group. Little Chef is also the perfect place to organize special birthdays where children will have fun learning the secrets of cooking in a professional kitchen, and parents will have time for a cup of coffee and relaxation. A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM

Yuka Ebihara A Midsummer Night’s dream trail photo Ewa Krasucka

Shakespeare’s output has frequently inspired choreographers. That is why the Polish National Ballet will realize a repertoire project preceding the celebrations of the 400th anniversary of the Stratfordian Bard’s death. A Midsummer Night’s Dreamshall open the cycle of Shakespeare premieres. Many choreographers have made use of this play but John Neumeier’s version surpasses them all. His ballet fully expresses the magic and the spirit of the Shakespearean play. This charming play about a love mix-up in real life and in the fantastic world of, the elves is one of the most valuable productions of this great choreographer. The three worlds in which Shakespeare’s heroes roam find their reflection both in choreography and in music. And everything has been presented by the choreographer with extraordinary empathy, humour and poetry. Text credit: National Opera

TOP Krakow TOP Warsaw

The 17th edition of the annual Ludwig van Beethoven Easter Festival coincides with anniversaries of two music greats: Richard Wagner and Giuseppe Verdi’s 200th birthday. The festival, which has been organized since 2004, is designed to show Beethoven’s works in various contexts and perspectives. His compositions are set amongst the works of his contemporaries and provide a backdrop to a time when many compositions were written by the masters of the period. This world-class music event, initiated by its artistic director Ms. Elżbieta Penderecka, boasts the presence of a spectrum of leading artists from around the globe. The stars this year will include, amongst many others, the famous Julian Rachlin and Itamar Golan duo conducting piano and violin sonatas, and the pianist Simon Trpčeski performing Schubert and Liszt masterpieces. The festival’s “Unknown Operas” segment will feature the lesser known version of Verdi’s opera Simon Boccanegra. The festival will close on March 29th with the monumental Requiem by Verdi under the direction of the Maestro Krzysztof Penderecki!
