“It felt like a whirlwind but, at the same time the world closed in,” said Celeste Ramazani recalling her cancer diagnosis. “After that came many appointments and a lot of stress and anxiety. A nurse first mentioned Gilda’s Club, and I realized that’s just what I need. We’re all connected by cancer. They welcomed me how I am and made me feel whole again. I found that sense of kindness, love and acceptance everyone deserves to feel. Gilda’s Club is where I can own my diagnosis--it will always have a place in my heart.” Gilda’s Club Kentuckiana is a peer-based support community for those impacted by cancer with two locations. Their main clubhouse is on Grinstead Drive, and their satellite location is within the YMCA at 17th and Broadway. “Above all else, Gilda’s Club provides a place where members can feel safe, at a time that’s filled with so much uncertainty.” said Megan Ueltschy Scheps, Associate Board Member of Gilda’s Club, as well as First Vice President Commercial Lender at Independence Bank. “It’s not just a place to visit for support. It’s an inclusive community of mutual understanding with a lot of positivity and connection.”

Set to be an exciting, yet secure environment, the event gives participants an experience that will never be forgotten for a very important cause. “It’s the most unique, thrilling event I’ve ever seen,” Jonathon Raley. Director of Philanthropy, Gilda’s Club Kentuckiana stated. “It challenges folks to face their fears and look at courage as a way to manifest their feelings.” Independence Bank is sponsoring the event for the 2nd straight year. “We’re fortunate to partner with Megan and everyone at Independence Bank,” added Raley.

Just in time for the 148th running of the Kentucky Derby® on May 7, Kendall-Jackson® and the Kentucky Derby® have unveiled two co-branded, limited-edition wines in celebration of their multi-year partnership.
The commemorative wine releases are perfect for celebrating this year’s Kentucky Derby® or as collector’s items for the cellar. The labels feature the 148th race logo and an artist’s rendering of Jackson Family thoroughbred Good Magic, sired by Curlin. The exclusive Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon are the first of a series of releases planned through the 150th running of the Kentucky Derby® in 2024.

endall-Jackson® and La Crema® were announced as the Preferred Wines of the Kentucky Derby® in 2021. The association also unites the Jackson family’s superior winemaking legacy and passion for thoroughbred horse racing, which began with Kendall-Jackson®’s founder Jess Stonestreet Jackson, Jr. When Jess Jackson was a boy, his favorite uncle hoisted him onto his shoulders to witness Seabiscuit win the 1938 Bay Meadows Handicap. He eventually purchased premium Bluegrass farmland in Lexington, Kentucky, to build Stonestreet Farm, Racing Stable, and Training Center in 2005. Jackson’s champion racehorses included 2007 Preakness Stakes and Breeder’s Cup Classic winner Curlin and 2009 Kentucky Oaks, Preakness Stakes, and Horse of the Year winner Rachel Alexandra. His investments in racehorses totaled over $200 million.

FINDING YOUR IDEAL
Work/Life Balance BY DONNA ISON
"'Balance' implies that it should be equal at all times, and the reality is it can't be, and it shouldn't be...that should not be the goal. What I encourage you to think about is work/ life integration." – COACH COLENE
20 TOPS LOUISVILLE | May 2022
T
hese days, more than ever, the very mention of work/life balance provokes eye rolls, head shakes, or outright laughter. With many of us working where we live, it is becoming exceedingly difficult to keep a clear distinction between career, family, and self. The very term “home office” implies that there is no distinction between our work space and our house. Couple that with 24-hour-access via half a dozen devices and it’s next to impossible to know where the workday ends and leisure time begins.
However, finding work/life is crucial for our mental health and physical wellbeing— so I talked to three experts on the topic.
WORK/LIFE BALANCE BASICS Before delving into ways you can achieve work/life balance, there are three questions to ask: – What is it? – Do I have it? – If not, how do I achieve it? According to Colene Eldridge, CEO of Be More Consulting, “Work/Life balance is the unicorn! 'Balance' implies that it should be equal at all times, and the reality is it can't be, and it shouldn't be... that should not be the goal. What I encourage you to think about is work/life integration.” Elridge, known as Coach Colene, is also the founder of the EmpowHer Conference women's leadership event and the author of Monday Morning Pep Talks. She explained integration means recognizing that, during certain phases in life, family or self may demand—and deserve— a greater portion of your time and energy. And, at others, the lion’s share will be gobbled up by your career. The key is learning how to handle the imbalance by being fully present in whatever activity requires your attention at the time. One of her favorite mantras is “Be here now.” Jivamukti Yoga Instructor Suzie Wheeler echoed this sentiment. She stated, “I used to tell my students, balance comes and goes. It's unrealistic to expect to have perfect balance in every pose. I feel that way about life/business as well. I only need to balance the task in front of me.”
Wheeler, a graduate of The Life Coach School, is a dating and relationship coach who focuses on single mothers and mothers in blended families.
BEATING BURNOUT So, how can you tell if you are handling the natural imbalance or it is handling you? In a word: burnout. Burnout displays as an overall feeling of depletion accompanied by lack of motivation, decreased sense of accomplishment, increased sense of being overwhelmed, and the loss of the ability to find inspiration or joy—even in activities that used to spark you.
According to the Mayo Clinic, you should aim to stand and stretch every 30 minutes or so during your workday. In addition to countering the negative effects of prolonged sitting, this gives you time to practice some of your good work/life balance techniques!
“A lot of people think burnout are just the physical symptoms of fatigue and exhaustion, but there's so much more to it than that. Burnout can take its toll in all aspects of your life,” Coach Colene said, “The key with burnout is to not just try to push your way through it. That doesn't work—ever! You really have to care your way through it."
3 Top Tips
There are three essential components of achieving a more balanced life. – Realize the importance of routine. – Develop healthy boundaries. – Learn to unplug.
TIP 1: Set a schedule for yourself—and stick to it Paige Hankla suggests people focus on routine tempered with flexibility and flow. She stated, “Everyone should set up a basic routine for themselves based on their own personal priorities in life. However, the routine shouldn't be so rigid that you can't move things around and go with the flow based on how you feel, children's schedules, and any other additional priorities that show up.” TOPS LOUISVILLE | May 2022 21
life+style
TIP 2: Bring on the boundaries
And as the founder and CEO of PlayThink, which promotes positive lifestyles and mindsets via online and in-person events, she urges people to schedule time for play: “Plan for fun! Write it in your calendar. Set up once a week friend-dates, lunch meetings, hikes, or whatever strikes your fancy.”
Perhaps there is no greater challenge than learning how to set limits and simply saying “no,” without guilt, when those limits are challenged.
Hankla also encouraged incorporating “transition activities” into your schedule to separate the segments of your life. This could as simple as a walk, 10 minutes of meditation, or listening to your favorite song. “Setting up these parameters can help alert the brain that you're moving from one part of your day to the next and soothe the transition,” Hankla explained.
Even as a life coach, Wheeler finds it tricky to set and keep distinct boundaries, especially while working from home. She admitted, “I would find myself working at 9pm at night when I was supposed to be spending time with my son. Now I operate as if I am going to work. I have a start time, I get ready, I am flexible, I take lunch, and I get off at 4pm.”
Wheeler takes a similar approach. She stated, “I take 20 minutes to transition from work to relaxing. A yoga headstand or a walk around the block is my equivalent of happy hour to unwind after work.”
Coach Colene agrees and encourages people to make a list of what acceptable for you and what is not acceptable to you in each area of your life, including relationships, work, social interactions,
health, lifestyle, and even entertainment. “Boundaries improve everything, but we're so scared of hurting other people's feelings that we don't use them. Boundaries are your friend,” Coach Colene said.
TIP 3: Unplug and unfollow When it comes to screen time and constantly being tethered to a device, Coach Colene suggests assigning time each week to be completely offline and setting the “Do Not Disturb” function on your phone. On the subject of social media, Hankla has a plan for keeping it positive: “I set myself up for success by only following leaders in my chosen field and unfollowing anything else. I do my best to set up a social media feed that is only inspirational, and I set limits.”
READY, SET,
Balance As working from home is becoming the norm for many, family schedules are returning to round-the-clock, and social media continues to inundate every aspect of our culture, it is up to each of us to take back our time, prioritize play, and determine how we want to expend our precious energy. Even if perfect work/life balance is a myth, we can all take steps to create a more enjoyable existence.

Jacquelyn Mosby met her husband,
Blake Beamer when she was his designated driver for a party. It was during Christmas break in her mother’s kitchen when Blake walked in; he played baseball with her brother at Spalding University. The guys were planning to head to a party, so Jacquelyn volunteered to be the designated driver, but instead of dropping the passengers off at the door, Jacquelyn stayed to talk to Blake all night. The couple has been together ever since. Jacquelyn, a Systems Support Analyst, and Blake, a Senior Art Director, both Louisville natives, were married in September 2021 at the Peterson Dumesnil House. The venue choice was a serendipitous one–not only did it have charm and character, but the foyer had the same “The Skating Minister” painting by Henry Raeburn that hung in her parents house for close to 20 years. The couple planned a dramatic, elegant and classy wedding with romantic touches and black, gold and pops of red and pink.
TOPS LOUISVILLE | May 2022 35
life+style
The couple’s first look was a highlight of
the day for both of them, but Jacquelyn was particularly touched by the moment with her father who is battling stage four metastatic colon cancer. “Having those sweet moments with my dad before the ceremony was so beautiful,” she says. “I will cherish those moments for the rest of my life. During your wedding day, time seems to move so quickly, and that brief moment with my dad allowed me to slow down and take it all in and realize how truly grateful I was that he was able to be there on our special day.” Seeing Blake for the first time on that day was “calming,” Jacquelyn says. “As soon as he turned around, I just felt all the stress from the morning melt away. You put so much time, effort and stress into planning this one day that sometimes you lose sight of the real reason you’re planning it.” The couple privately read their vows they wrote to each other and exchanged gifts. “Blake is extremely sentimental when it comes to gifts, and I feel like I’m horrible at gift-giving,” she says. “He got me a handcrafted keepsake box to put all our wedding memorabilia and a set of real pearl earrings, and I got him floor seats to see John Mayer in Austin. We are HUGE John Mayer fans.” Blake’s favorite moment from the wedding was listening to the officiant tell the couple’s story of all the things they have been through together. “Hearing someone else tell our story was really cool to hear, and it made us proud of the life we have built and continue to build together,” he says. A funny moment, at least after the fact, Jacquelyn says, was when a bang was heard outside the bridal suite on the day of the wedding. The wedding planner had just walked out the door and the stairs at the venue are wooden and very steep, so Jacquelyn asked someone to go check on her. When they reported back saying she was OK, everything went back to business as usual. It was not until after the ceremony that Jacquelyn and Blake talked to their photographer who was embarrassed to tell them that it was she who fell, dropping the bride’s dress down three stories and holding onto the spindles to stop herself from continuing down the spiral staircase. The couple still laughs about another moment when the groom’s brother brought tuxedo pants instead of suit pants, which means he did not have belt loops. The groomsmen banned together to improvise, cutting a belt loop from each of their pants and sewing them onto the beltless groomsman’s pants.

Jacquelyn has a couple of tips for future brides, including steaming the dress before the wedding. “I went to steam my dress the day of, and when I pulled my dress out of the garment bag, it had dirt all over the bottom…many tears were shed,” she says. Also, she tells brides not to go to a new hair stylist
before the wedding date. “I went to get my hair trimmed with a different stylist since mine was booked,” she says. “The stylist cut off 8 inches of my hair!” Despite their bad luck, the couple says they could not think of anything they would do differently, as their day was perfectly imperfect.

Robin K. Hall & Michelle James OF NTC TRAFFIC CONTROL BY DAWN ANDERSON PHOTOS BY DICK ARNSPIGER
R
obin K. Hall and Michelle James of NTC Traffic Control are passionate about second-chance employment for justice-involved individuals. Founded in 2007, NTC is a woman-owned, federal, state, and locally certified company with a mission “to provide quality services and uplift communities through the process.” In providing Traffic Control, Workforce Consulting, and Safety Equipment, NTC helps people reestablish their work history, provide for their families, and become valued members of society. When Robin and Michelle started the company, there was no other woman-owned company like theirs. “Getting in the door was extremely hard,” says Michelle. But those circumstances only served to make them more relatable to their employees, who had “doors shut to them left and right.” Robin began her career in real estate in 1988 and moved into the construction field in 1992. Michelle worked in government for 21 years. Their combined experience and expertise allow them to provide thorough strategies and quality service and products, all with a culture of giving back to the community.
38 TOPS LOUISVILLE | May 2022
NTC is proud to be a woman-owned company. “Our husbands do not work here,” Michelle declares emphatically. “Robin and I run the show!” Robin says they will continue to “promote growth, care about and believe in people, and honor the TEAM acronym: Together, Everyone Achieves More.” They see any mistake as a learning opportunity, not a failure. “We all strive to be better every day.”
companies are down 40% or better in the workforce. We’ve been able to grow and succeed when everyone else is struggling.” Michelle and Robin have had no regrets about their hiring strategy. “It’s not easy,” says Robin. “But it’s not always hard,” pipes in Michelle, finishing Robin’s thought. And their former second chance employees know that, if they need to, they can always come back to NTC. NTC employee Bryan Lusco is a prime example of how second-chance employment benefits the company, the workforce, and our community. “I have been with NTC for three years in March 2022. Upon being welcomed to NTC, I was having major difficulties finding adequate employment that would provide for my family. Since then, I have been promoted to a Supervisor position with a take-home vehicle. I am truly thankful that I was given the opportunity to provide for my family, that my past does not define who I am. It’s safe to say that I am living proof that once a person decides to make a change in their life, it can be achieved if someone believes in them. NTC believes in people like myself. I consider NTC as family, and they treat us as such. Now my bills are paid, my family sees the positivity in me, and I feel like I have a purpose.” NTC has about 35 employees working in traffic control, setting up and executing safe, smart work “zones and cones” for property development, construction projects, paving companies, utilities, and emergency response. NTC also sells quality PPE and safety equipment to hospitals, first responders, construction companies, and state and federal agencies out of their own warehouse. With workforce consulting, Robin and Michelle teach and train other companies on how to rebuild their labor workforce through second-chance. “We work with companies to deal with HR and be more hands-on, says Robin. “There is a lot of paperwork involved, and it’s important to have an open-door policy.”
Second-chance employment is built into NTC business contracts and job sites and is the cornerstone of the workforce consulting division. During their off-season in the winter months, NTC is involved in programs to assist and empower underprivileged youth before they are in a position to enter the justice system. Still, Michelle wonders, “Why aren’t we doing more for second chance folks?” And Robin points out that “so many small businesses and companies are struggling with workforce-related issues these days.” For NTC, second-chance was a natural direction, even before the pandemic significantly altered the job market. According to Michelle, “Most
Spring and summer are the busiest seasons in construction. Robin and Michelle encourage the public to keep safety and patience in mind while driving. People on their cell phones behind the wheel make work hazardous for NTC employees. For those interested in their services, booking requires at least 24 hours’ notice, while the consulting schedule is more open. Dozens of people are coming off incarceration in the coming months. Patricia “Tish” Morris, Esq.
Candidate for Circuit Court Judge Attorney at Winton & Hiestand Law Group, PLLC 502-882-3133 • TMM@LouisvilleLawOffice.com
“After undergrad school at U of L, I went into sales and even worked as a flight attendant as I saved money to put toward attending law school,” says Patricia “Tish” Morris, a lifelong Louisville native and Sacred Heart graduate who has served as a lawyer and worked in litigation for over two decades. In that time, she’s built the experience, knowledge, and wisdom to best use the responsibility and trust that will be invested in her as a Circuit Court Judge. “We are molded to be the people we are, but a Judge must come in with an open mindset and adhere to the law.” Tish is ready to begin making solid rulings from the bench just as soon as she is sworn in. “I don’t take lightly the effect that I will have on people’s lives,” she says. “I grew up in the legal system. I understand it, I’m comfortable with it, and the courtroom is already like a second home.” Tish has practiced in the areas of civil litigation, criminal defense, family, wills and estates, and business law. She has a strong desire for fairness and equality despite anyone’s race, religion, sexual orientation, socioeconomic position, or gender. “I believe in the Oath of Impartiality,” she says. “I will abide by the laws outlined by the esteemed lawmakers and add in the element of kindness, fairness, and hope to all of those who might come before me.” A well-regarded figure of integrity and empathy, Judge Geoffrey Morris, Tish’s father, was a revered and stalwart icon of the Justice System here in Louisville for many years. Today, Tish seeks to carry on her father’s legacy. “My father built his reputation on the idea that everyone should have access to the courtroom; that it should be available and accessible to all,” she says. “I want to make a similar impression and create an open door policy. When I’m elected to serve, I believe my absolute obligation will be to work in service to the community and make the legal system less intimidating.” PA I D F O R BY T H E C O M M I T T E E TO E L EC T PAT R IC I A M O R R I S

Ashley Sayler Owner, Cask Southern Kitchen & Bar
ashley.sayler@cask-louisville.com
Susan Sarandon. Paula Deen. Lisa Vanderpump. Ashley Sayler. The common denominator? All successful woman restaurant owners, all powerhouses in the world of business, and all mothers. Each of these women is beating the odds in the male-dominated restaurant industry by operating successful businesses while staying involved in their family’s lives. Maybe none as much as local Louisville business owner Ashley Sayler of Cask Southern Kitchen and Bar. Sayler opened Cask in the heart of the pandemic when all odds were against her succeeding. However, Cask wasn’t Sayler’s first business endeavor. She opened her first concept in November 2019. When the pandemic hit, she had to pivot quickly to stay afloat. Within a month and a half, Sayler bought out her business partner, redesigned the interior, built a patio, rebranded her entire restaurant to meet market needs, had her son in the mix, and opened as Cask in July 2020. The idea was to create a place for people of all ages to “come as you are”. Whether it be a family night, date night, ladies’ night, you name it – Cask was designed for everyone to be able to walk through the doors and enjoy from-scratch southern cuisine in a welcoming atmosphere with outstanding hospitality. Not to mention, they offer delicious handcrafted cocktails with over 70 bourbons to choose from; hence, the Cask name. Since opening the doors to Cask, Sayler has added to her own tribe – she recently had twins girls eight months ago – that’s right, three kiddos under 2. She has managed to quadruple sales, start a family, and give back to the community since rebranding. Cask often hosts events benefiting local organizations- just another reason Sayler is a treasure to the Louisville community.

Shannon Cales
Founder and CEO of NuLease Medical Solutions Nulease.com • ShannonC@NuLease.com
In 2016, Shannon Cales started NuLease Medical Solutions, a premier customized program for those suffering from Substance Use Disorder. Sadly, Shannon lost her sister to this disease in 2003. “It was critical to me to build a unique program which reduces barriers for individuals and their families seeking help,” she says. “The staff here provide a loving family environment which holds both the patients and providers accountable.” NuLease has recently been given the Better Business Bureau’s highest honor, the 2022 Torch Awards for Ethics, and they have seen over 5,000 patients to date. A strong percentage of those patients still obtain counseling and other services at NuLease. This amount of longitudinal data has given them the opportunity to partner with the University of Louisville to research and publish critical findings which have made their program successful. They are currently working on numerous groundbreaking studies that will drive policy based on evidencebased treatment protocols. “There are a lot of bad players in the business of ‘drug treatment’ programs,” Shannon says. “Many will only take cash for visits and do not provide wrap-around services that treat the underlying conditions associated with the chronic abuse.” Substance Use Disorder must be viewed the same as any other long-term disease such as diabetes or cardiac anomalies. Medication and strict adherence to a program are lifelong journeys, and relapse is part of recovery.” At Nulease, all Medicaid, Medicare, and most commercial insurances are accepted. They provide clothing, counseling, psychiatric care, group therapy, family therapy, and primary care. NuLease also assists patients in becoming employed, regaining custody of their children, and sustaining long-term success. Most recently, they launched a mobile medical unit that serves the homeless population where they are. Currently, NuLease has two locations with plans to expand that footprint in the near future.

W
hen we hear the word Barre, many are reminded of ballet class as a child twirling in a pink tutu wearing ballet shoes. No need to whip out those tutus and ballet shoes for this Barre class. Comfortable workout wear is welcome, such as leggings and a comfortable shirt. Ballet shoes are not required; however, no- slip socks or gripper socks are recommended. A Barre class is a workout focused on technique inspired by elements of yoga, pilates, and ballet. The idea is to target movements with a high number of repetitions with little to no resistance. With the focus being on arms, core, glutes, and legs, these movements incorporate pulses with many reps to get a fatiguing workout. Very simple movements such as

squats are repeated over and over to fatigue, similar to the workout that we may have felt in ballet class without all the fancy turns and intricate footwork. Some classes incorporate bands or exercise balls, but most of the class consists of just simple exercises using your own body weight. Balance, flexibility, and posture are just a few of the amazing benefits that a Barre class offers.
PiYo
P
iYo offers the dynamic duo of pilates and yoga in one. This class offers low impact movements that do not involve jumping, equipment, or weights. The only materials you may want to bring with you if you are a first timer, would be a yoga mat and towel. With the strengthening benefits from pilates and the flexibility effects of yoga, PiYo offers an overall full body workout. If you are familiar with the term downward facing dog, PiYo incorporates downward dog with a plank to create a flowing movement called the “ Downward -Facing Dog Plank Flow.” Repeating this movement 8 to 12 times gives you joint stress free calisthenic workout that can be done daily. These classes are offered at Baptist Health Milestone Wellness Center. Amy Brennan is one of our instructors. She brings the fun into a workout, allowing new students to feel comfortable at the same time. Amy has been teaching PiYo for eight years. “You get a full body workout with no impact,” says Amy. “I am known as the Planking Queen and the side plank is my specialty. In my Barre class, we use a lot of light weights and body weight to tone and build strength. I love to play 80s music, and lucky for me, my Barre students love it too.” Try something new in the month of May and treat yourself this Mother’s Day to a PiYo or Barre class at Milestone.

Varicose Veins BY DAWN ANDERSON PHOTO BY DICK ARNSPIGER
D
r. Steven Samuel of Comprehensive Vein Care in Jeffersonville, Indiana, spent 33 years as a general surgeon. Long days working primarily on his feet caused his legs to become heavy and swollen with varicose veins, inspiring Dr. Samuel to become certified and trained in vein care. His experienced patient-to-patient approach guides his patients to “healthy legs that you can be proud of!” “Veinous insufficiency has a wide spectrum of symptoms, including ankle swelling and legs feeling heavy or tired,” says Dr. Samuel. “As the insufficiency progresses, it leads
to varicose and spider veins. Spider veins are cosmetic, whereas varicose veins have significant medical symptoms. As the blood leeches out of those veins, the skin becomes blood-stained and dark. If left untreated, the skin breaks down with ulcers.” Dr. Samuel shared some statistics relating to varicose veins' causes and contributing factors. Seventy-five percent of varicose vein cases are due to genetics. One parent with a history of varicose veins increases the risk by 41%, and two parents by 82%. The remaining 25% of cases are commonly due to occupational factors or spending long hours working on your feet. Each pregnancy also increases the risk of varicose veins by 12.5%. A significant advantage of Comprehensive Vein Care is everything is performed at one location and is a “turnkey operation.” Every procedure is at his medical office under a local anesthetic, without incisions or stitches. Each procedure takes thirty minutes or less, and there is no downtime or loss of work. Patients may return to work the same or the next day.

PREGNANCY

60 TOPS LOUISVILLE | May 2022
BY KELLI MUDD MILLER, MD, FACOG, OB/GYN, WOMEN FIRST OF LOUISVILLE COURTESY PHOTOS
H
aving a baby changes your life forever and, as obstetricians, it’s an incredible joy to be part of that with journey with our patients. At Women First, our goal is to help prepare you for pregnancy and childbirth, supporting you at each step along the way so that you feel calm, confident, and prepared for childbirth and new motherhood. Each patient has a personal Care Team comprised of a physician obstetrician, a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant, and clinical staff who are all dedicated to your individualized care. Providing exceptional health care, we offer more choices in your birth experience and respect alternative therapies and treatment in keeping moms and babies healthy.
“Congratulations! You’re Pregnant!” IS JUST THE BEGINNING. To help you understand your pregnancy and get ready for childbirth, our obstetrics guidebook details much of what you need to know when you’re expecting. Information about what to eat, which medications are safe to use, how (and how much) to exercise, how to evaluate daily activities, when it’s safe to travel, and much more help support you in making the best choices for you and your baby throughout pregnancy. Every woman should champion her own birthing experience so that it will be everything she imagines. To help you prepare for labor and childbirth, an individualized Birthing Plan prompts you to think through all of the aspects of the birthing process before your big day. You select the labor and delivery options you are most comfortable with, so you feel calm, confident, and empowered to have the birth you deserve. Choose your laboring style—walking, moving about, using birthing balls or a birthing tub—and then add music, aromatherapy, visitors, and more to give you the flexibility and control you desire throughout your labor. Select the pain management options that will work best for you, from no pain medication at all to nitrous oxide (laughing gas) to intravenous pain medication and an epidural, if you desire. During delivery, do you want a mirror to view the birth? We recommend immediate
skin-to-skin contact with your baby as soon as possible after birth for connection, and there are many timing options for cord clamping/cutting, breastfeeding, washing your baby, and baby’s care. Women First delivers exclusively at Baptist Health, partnering with the Baptist Health Labor & Delivery team to have a safe and comfortable experience for you. Labor and delivery rooms offer privacy during birth with postpartum rooms for you to bond afterwards with your new little one. Lactation consultants are on staff 24/7, offering help and guidance to ensure your breastfeeding is successful. Of course, no birth can ever be “planned” since situations may arise during labor and delivery that were not expected. If that happens, we work closely with you to keep you informed of any changes and what your new choices may be to still achieve your birthing goals in a safe and nurturing delivery environment. And Baptist Health’s high-risk pregnancy consultations and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) offer peace of mind and expert medical care for you and your baby. Once you’re home with your new little one, our care continues. To make sure you’re adjusting well to new motherhood, our twoweek post-delivery, complimentary telehealth visit is a reassuring call. We’ll check on you and your baby to answer any questions you may have on breastfeeding, sleeping schedules, adapting to your baby, and more. And we’ll screen for issues—including
postpartum depression—that you may be experiencing to address your concerns early, before they can become bigger challenges. If you’ve had a prior Cesarean delivery, you now have more options for vaginal birth after a c-section (VBAC) with Women First. Because vaginal deliveries generally have lower risks than c-section births, we work closely with patients to determine viable candidates for VBAC. Assessing your delivery history and risk factors is key to determining success, as is developing an individualized birthing plan with VBAC-approved patients. Working closely with our VBAC patients helps them understand and be prepared for potential changes in that birthing plan, including the potential need for an emergency c-section. And that preparation has paid off. Women First’s success rate for VBAC delivery is close to 90%—significantly higher than the national average. Our goal is healthy moms and healthy babies, and Women First takes pride in the 100 or so babies we deliver every month. We love supporting new moms—helping you be prepared for this amazing journey and empowered make the best decisions for you and your new baby. It’s definitely the little things that count.

WHAT REMEDIES DO YOU OFFER TO HELP TIRED MOMS LOOK REFRESHED? As moms, we are the ‘keepers of all the things’ who deserve to look and feel our best. The hardest part is just finding the time to book a consultation. Once they do, we develop a plan respectful of their budget, long-term aesthetic goals, and busy schedule! We start with basic skincare and target what bothers them the most. Quality skincare makes aesthetic injections look good and last longer. Neurotoxins such as Botox®, Dysport®, and Xeomin® are easy ways to tiptoe into injectables. Biological volume loss and bone reabsorption affect how we look starting at age 25. We ensure appropriate treatments to restore proper mid-face volume through dermal fillers or PDO thread procedures. DO YOU HAVE SOME WORDS OF ADVICE TO HELP REJUVENATE VOLUME LOST WITH AGE? Brooke Evans, PA-C - Hūe Aesthetics: “I was a physician assistant in orthopedic surgery and moved into aesthetics in the Lexington area. I saw a spot in the Louisville market to make aesthetics more accessible, comfortable, and concierge for patients. At Hūe Aesthetics, we have diagrams in the office to explain volume loss, including loss of collagen, elastin, and structure. Our goal is
not to change your face entirely but to turn back the clock a little bit to enhance your natural features. Treatments such as Hyaluronic Acid Fillers, Radiesse®, and Sculptra® can be very effective. HA Fillers and Radiesse® smooth moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds and can correct volume loss. Radiesse® and Sculptra® stimulate collagen production and elastin formation for a more youthful appearance. Darnell SuperChef Ferguson was continually approached about opening a restaurant in West Louisville for over a year. But he was determined not to over-saturate any market with SuperChef locations. Ferguson and his friend and business partner Austin Harris put their heads together to figure out a concept that might work. They discovered that as much as 60% of the clientele of local seafood restaurants comes from the West End of Louisville. The idea for Tha Drippin Crab was born.
“First,
we had to fight the noise of price, that premium seafood prices would be too expensive with the restaurant’s location in the Russell neighborhood,” says Ferguson. But I got to a place I had only dreamed of reaching, so I knew we could break barriers and be the first restaurant of its kind past 9th Street. We knew the risk of high price points in an area that was not high income, but we decided to put it out there and see what happens.” With the proliferation of seafood boil restaurants in Louisville in recent years, Ferguson is quick to point out that at Tha Drippin Crab, “We don’t boil seafood.” Every item at Tha Drippin Crab gets its own seasoning and flavor profile, and “every item tastes different.” Tha Drippin Crab and its Village at West Jefferson (aka Molo Village) neighbors not only serve West Louisville but intend to be a destination. “We have people driving from the East End to the West End. We bring something to the game that no one’s brought before.”

says his pride in Tha Drippin Crab really has so little to do with him. “It’s more on shining light and bringing attention to the whole team.” With the leadership of Austin Harris and DayStanya Wright, Tha Drippin Crab strives to be the best, despite the staffing challenges the entire industry is experiencing. Ferguson’s service philosophy is that each day is not just another day for restaurant guests. “We maximize the experience and treat people special.”
The experience begins outside with brightly colored awnings and punchy window graphics. The interior, designed by Honeywick Art Director Cat Louis, encourages guests to “wake up and be bright.” It has the feel of a major-market restaurant, according to Ferguson. “People take pictures and tell their friends. People of color are represented here, reflecting our investment in the West End and the Russell neighborhood. We want young people to be inspired and encouraged, to remind young chefs of the history of Black cooking in America. We’ve been prospering since the worst time in our history, so there’s no reason they can’t make it.” SuperChef shares his menu favorites for this spring and summer. Get the party started with Drippin Fries: “Crispy fries seasoned with parmesan garlic and herbs, topped with shrimp & smoked salmon, then finished with house-made cheese sauce, pico de gallo.” The Crazy Drip Combo is the go-big-or-go-home entrée choice: a lobster tail, a pound of snow crab, six smoked or fried shrimp, sausage of choice Turkey, Drippin, or Vegan), 70 TOPS LOUISVILLE | May 2022
choice of corn (Mexican Street Style with garlic aioli, bourbon smoked paprika, candied bacon, cotija cheese, and cilantro or Super Street Style with Louisville Drip, Grippo’s® seasoning, and parmesan cheese), crispy potatoes, and egg. Enhance the Crazy Drip Combo or Create Your Own Drip Combo with Tha Drippin Crab’s Signature Drips. Choose from six crazy delicious butter sauces: signature BBQ Cajun Louisville Drip, Lemon Pepper Drip, Garlic Drip, Korean BBQ Drip, creamy garlic and cheese Italian Drip, and jerk-inspired Caribbean Drip. Ferguson also recommends top Specialties from Tha Drippin’ Crab. Seafood Lasagna has truffle alfredo, creamy tomato sauce, shrimp, smoked salmon, fried lobster tail, and cheese. The 16” Seafood Pizza with seafood cream sauce is topped with cheese, shrimp, salmon, lobster tail, spinach, and caramelized onions. The birria taco boom continues at Tha Drippin Crab with Seafood Birria Tacos: three flour shell tacos with smoked salmon, shrimp, onions, cheese, and cilantro, served with Drippin soup. Tha Drippin Crab bar program offers Signature, Dry Ice, Sweet Foam, and Old Fashioned Cocktails, plus a selection of minority-owned spirits unlike anything Louisville has seen before. “We offer top quality drinks that are fun and bright but stand up to the entrée menu. Get your phones out!” says Ferguson because these drinks are definitely Instagram-worthy. Enjoy Happy Hour 5-7 pm Wednesday and Thursday with drink and app specials and a DJ. And outdoor seating season will bring the party to the street!

We dedicate the second Sunday in May to mothers. At long last, let’s treat Mom to Sunday Brunch out and about this year! wner Oscar Ortiz & Executive Chef/Owner Adrian Jimarez opened La Suerte Mexican Restaurant in April 2019. According to La Suerte General Manager Arielle Sadler, “Chef Adrian's goal was to showcase the rich and diverse flavors of Mexican & Latin cuisine beyond what you would find at a runof-the-mill Mexican restaurant. With a heavy emphasis on seafood, items on our menu are made fresh, from scratch, with heart.” La Suerte’s Brunch Menu is served 8 am 3 pm seven days a week, but they offer the Dinner Menu all day. “It’s the only place where you can get your choice of either a $10 Breakfast Burrito or $30 Steak Ranchero at 8 in the morning.” La Suerte also boasts a huge patio and $3 Mimosas. Sadler’s favorite day to work is when Chef Jimarez bakes the challah bread in-house for the French Toast de Caramelo. “The delightful smell of fresh-baked bread fills up the whole restaurant.” Vanilla custard, fresh berries, caramel sauce, and whipped cream top the homemade challah. Another sweet spot is the cornmeal-based Tres Leches Pancake.
Chilaquiles Rojos features chorizo and a chipotle tomato sauce. The Verdes version has chicken and tomatillo sauce. Huevos Benedicto puts a Mexican spin on Eggs Benedict with guacamole, pico de gallo, jalapeno hollandaise, cilantro, and pickled onions. Huevos Divorciados is two eggs any style, home fries, refried beans, and red and green sauces topped with queso fresco and cilantro.
La Suerte accepts reservations, offers full-service catering, and has a private dining room that can accommodate up to 25 people. For more information, visit lasuertelouisvilleky.com. Stay in the loop on events and specials by following @lasuertelouisville on Instagram and Facebook.

After a successful stint with 21C Museum Hotels in Lexington and Louisville as Proof on Main Executive Chef and then directing culinary operations, he has returned to lead the Gralehaus kitchen. Gralehaus is “a neighborhood institution, tucked away on Baxter Avenue” in the Highlands. “The atmosphere is light and bright but cozy, with the high energy of the open kitchen and baristas,” says Chef Searle. The brunch

menu reflects the sourcing and quality of the coffee program. “We put a refined edge on a comfortable, casual meal period - combining hearty, familiar dishes with the freshness of California-style cuisine.” Chef Searle recommended some “snacks and shares” to get the table started. Whipped Burrata Toast is “homemade, light and fluffy haus sourdough” topped with red pepper jelly and whipped burrata. Or try Smashed Avocado with thin, crisp Ian’s Russian rye toast and pepita relish. The Best Damn Coffee Cake or Lemon Pound Cake satisfies the sweet tooth. For entrées, Chef suggests the seasonal frittata with spring vegetables or Biscuit & Gravy with a tall, flaky, salty scratch biscuit, Jake’s Fresh Country Sausage, local maple syrup, farm eggs, and fresh
sage. The more exotic Eggs & Grains features farro verde, poached eggs, seasonal vegetables, feta, and chimichurri. Chef declares The Biscuit Sandwich “best in town” with scratch biscuit, scrambled egg, Jake’s Country Sausage, BAB’s pimento cheese, and haus sauce. According to Chef Searle, “The courtyard Grale Garden is refreshed for sunny spring and early summer, and Holy Grale has reopened with a full renovation.” Stay tuned for Grale Goods, an exciting addition coming soon to The Grales family!

T
he Café has remained a Louisville favorite for decades, from its beginnings in the Louisville Antique Mall in Schnitzelburg to Brent Street under the train tracks to its current location in the Stoneware & Co. building in Paristown. According to Co-Owner Wes Johnson, “That’s a tribute to original owners Cindy and Sal Rubino. We’re thrilled to be part of the next phase of growth.” When asked what makes The Café so special, Johnson says, “It’s the vibe of the place, welcoming and comfortable. The larger atrium is big and bustling, while the smaller dining room is more intimate. The food and service contribute to that. We make everything from scratch with fresh ingredients. We have a great staff from the kitchen to the front door and everyone in between. And it shows on the plate. We serve approachable food that’s not too clever but very honest.” The Café has long been a popular brunch destination, with breakfast and lunch now served all day. Johnson’s brunch favorite
is a riff on The Hot Brown called The Stephen Foster, aka “The Sun Shines Bright on My Aged Kentucky Ham.” The Biscuits and Gravy are also a hit: “Two open-faced biscuits smothered in our homemade sausage gravy.” Soups and sandwiches make for excellent brunch combos. The Café will only divulge a few ingredients - diced tomatoes, onions, and heavy cream - from their “way-secret” Tomato Dill soup recipe. Popular sandwiches pairings include The Victorian pimento cheese (“Add bacon!”), The Queen Anne Benedictine, and The Rubino (reminiscent of a Reuben). Dinner service began a year ago and is currently served Thursday through Sunday. This summer, the dinner service will expand to Monday through Sunday with its “Southern-inspired classics menu.” A visit to The Café also presents an opportunity to enjoy Paristown events such as Fleur de Flea markets and shows, art fairs, and Sunday farmer’s markets.

upport. Research. Hope. These three words describe and define Twisted Pink, the Louisville-based nonprofit organization that supports research for metastatic breast cancer “to target the disease not only here in Louisville but across the country,” said Caroline Johnson, founder and executive director. “Hope comes in many forms and the mission of Twisted Pink is to provide hope and connection to people living with metastatic breast cancer (stage IV) by funding bold breakthroughs in research and awareness of the disease.
Caroline (Founder and Executive Director, Twisted Pink) and Mike Johnson at the 2021 Twisted Pink event
Caroline founded the organization in June 2014 and since that time, Twisted Pink has supported this important research with over $1.3 million. “Researchers have to find funding to support their ideas and we are literally giving them the seeds to grow their ideas into something impactful for patients. This is hope!” Caroline said. One in 8 women will develop breast cancer in a lifetime and 20% to 30% of people with a breast cancer diagnosis will have a recurrence of metastatic breast cancer, which is when cancer spreads beyond the breast to other organs and there is no cure. “It is estimated that only 7% of all research funding to breast cancer supports metastatic breast cancer research and this is simply not enough,” said Caroline. In addition to funding research, Twisted Pink also helps individuals directly. Last year the organization started a program called Box of Hope. Each box is filled with health and beauty items to help survivors and patients feel supported, following what are often expensive treatments after a breast cancer diagnosis. One Box of Hope is available per breast cancer patient/survivor in each calendar year. The program is made possible

2021 Twisted Pink attendees through a collaboration between Twisted Pink and the United Breast Cancer Foundation, who provides in-kind product support. “We also receive grants to help cover the cost of shipping and handling. We rely heavily on volunteers to help with this well received patient program.” One patient named Dru shared with the organization that she had been struggling but the Box of Hope “inspired me to get up, get showered and get 'ready' to face my day. The thought of trying out some 'new to me' cosmetic lines was so fantastically fun! And the
socks! LOVE. THEM. I have been living with MBC for 3 years. My side effects and treatment strategy are keeping me stable for the time. Still, some days are harder than others emotionally and the box was just what I needed to remind myself I can (I must!) keep going.” Twisted Pink is pleased that so many members of the community are stepping up to support the organization and its mission of funding research for MBC, metastatic breast cancer. The Hillbilly Coalition’s 20th annual Hillbilly Outfield Derby Event, May 6-7, is donating all net proceeds to Twisted Pink.

Twisted Pink’s own annual fundraiser, “An Evening Inspired Gala” is Saturday, July 16 at Churchill Downs. “This is an evening of hope and inspiration bringing over 400 people from our community and surrounding states together as we raise funding to support our mission,” said Caroline. The event will feature dinner, dancing, a silent auction and live auction, wheel of chance, a bourbon pull, and dancing to live music from the band Soul Circus. This year the United Breast Cancer Foundation is the organization’s Title Patient Sponsor, covering the cost of 16 patients and a guest to attend the gala, and supporting other educational events throughout the year. “The United Breast Cancer Foundation has been a huge support to Twisted Pink and our mission and we are so thankful,” Caroline said. Other sponsors include UofL Health, Baptist Health, Ad Cucina, Churchill Downs, WLKY and the magazine you are reading right now, TOPS Louisville. Caroline says that what Twisted Pink is trying to accomplish can sometimes feel like an uphill battle. “But each time I am ready to quit, I receive a message or letter like the one below and know that what we are doing matters.” Dr. Robert Alderman of Carmel, Indiana, wrote to Caroline about his wife. “If it wasn’t for an organization like Twisted Pink, Jenny may not have lived anywhere close to another 12 years. Without dollars being funded towards research which is earmarked for metastatic disease, Jenny and many other women and men like her, would have no hope. Thank you!”

F
ounded in 1921, the Junior League of Louisville (JLL) has stood the test of time for 100 years and counting. JLL is stronger than ever in its commitment of service to the community. To cite just one example, JLL awarded $200,000 to 16 other nonprofit organizations in the community last year in honor of its centennial anniversary, “As the Junior League of Louisville enters our second century, we are continuing our legacy of empowering women leaders in Louisville and improving our community through volunteer action and collaboration,” said Michelle Black White, president of the organization.
In 2021, JLL shifted the focus of their recent outreach and projects from focusing on early childhood education to include helping youth experiencing homelessness. “We are partnering with Coalition Supporting Young Adults (Coalition for the Homeless) and other local agencies to bridge gaps in our community with the goal of providing support to atrisk youth and assist with their transition to independent living,” Michelle said. Members of the Junior League of Louisville know that collaboration—working together— is a key to success in anything: life, business, small projects and extensive undertakings, and helping people in the community. They
often use the hashtags #BetterTogether and #JLBetterTogether. With that in mind, JLL has partnered with other organizations— Speed Art Museum, Kentucky Science Center, Susan G. Komen, Maryhurst, and Boys and Girls Haven—to improve access and quality of services to the community at large. “In recent history, we partnered with WAVE 3 News and Jefferson County Public Education Foundation to bring Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library to the children of Louisville and launched it into an independent nonprofit,” Michelle said.
This past February, the 5th annual Little Black Dress Initiative raised $14,000 to support the mission and projects of JLL. For five consecutive days, 50 JLL members and community members wore the same black dress or outfit, wearing a lapel sticker that said “Ask me about youth homelessness.” The event raised awareness of JLL’s focus to draw attention to the challenges for youth ages 16 to 24 experiencing homelessness. Limited resources affect daily life, so Junior League of Louisville is working hard to reduce that impact in the Louisville community through programs like “Life Skills Training.” The Little Black Dress Initiative also offered an opportunity for individuals and organizations to support the Junior League of Louisville. “The purpose of the Junior League of Louisville is to advance women’s leadership with meaningful community impact through volunteer action, collaboration and training,” Michelle said. “I joined JLL in my 20s to gain leadership opportunities and understand the needs in our community. These firsthand experiential opportunities helped me to serve on several local nonprofit boards and to currently serve as the executive director of the Brightside Foundation.”

Memorial Day: A Day of Remembrance For most Americans, Memorial Day weekend is a long three day weekend to start off the summer vacation. However, Memorial Day has a much more complex meaning honoring the courageous men and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

M
emorial Day, previously known as Decoration Day, originally honored those lost while fighting in the Civil War. However during World War I, the United States found itself embroiled in another major conflict and the holiday then evolved to honor all American military personnel who died including all wars and eras of military service. In 1968, Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which established Memorial Day as the last Monday in May. The change went into effect in 1971 also declaring Memorial Day a federal holiday. To many service members and their families, this somber day of remembrance is still honored correctly. “Memorial Day marks the occasion, when you hear the snap and pop movements of the rifle honor guard as they

hear the commands, READY, AIM, FIRE. The ultimate honor is firing off a 21-gun salute knowing you gave a Hero their due because they earned it,” states Cletis Evans, retired Marine who assists with the Marine Corps League Detachment 729 Rifle Honors Guard. “Whether it’s a brother or sister veteran laying in that grave, we, as a nation, must care for that veteran…even after life.” While over the years, as more and more civilians continue to water down its meaning into a three day weekend of pre-summer celebrations and retail sales, there is a place that continues to carry on the true meaning of Memorial Day, the Zachary Taylor National Cemetery. Named for President Zachary Taylor, the Zachary Taylor National Cemetery is beautifully located along Brownsboro Road and was established in 1928. The cemetery has over 14,000 interments ranging from the Spanish-American War through the Persian Gulf War. It’s one of seven national cemeteries in the Commonwealth aside from the five state veterans cemeteries run by the Kentucky Department of Veterans Affairs. Each year the cemetery hosts a multitude of events allowing the public to honor our heroes on their sacred ground including their annual Memorial Day Service. Bill Hartley,
the Assistant Director of the Zachary Taylor National Cemetery is proud of the time honored tradition. “Memorial Day is a time we come together as a community and a country to honor our fallen veterans. To show our appreciation by recognizing and thanking them for the sacrifices made for our great nation.”
The Zachary Taylor National Cemetery Memorial Day Ceremony is set for Monday, May 30 at 11:00 AM and is open to the public. For more information on Zachary Taylor National Cemetery Memorial Day events, please visit cem.va.gov/cems/nchp/ zacharytaylor.asp. In closing, it’s certainly understandable to be excited for the summer season. However, this Memorial Day, instead of using the improper phrase, “Happy Memorial Day,” take the time to properly honor and remember our fallen heroes by attending a Memorial Day service, it’s a great way to open up the conversation with your family about the true cost of freedom.

Silver anniversary festivities going on throughout the year at all Morning Pointe locations! Morning Pointe Senior Living will mark 25 years of service to seniors throughout the calendar year 2022 as the senior living, personal care and Alzheimer’s memory care company celebrates its founding in 1997 by healthcare entrepreneurs Greg A. Vital and J. Franklin Farrow. What originally began as a healthcare real estate development company quickly transitioned into a mission-centered management company dedicated to changing the lives of aging residents well into their retirement years. Today, Morning Pointe Senior Living serves over 1,700 residents with 1,600 associates providing individualized care for 36 (and growing) campuses across the Southeast—all with Vital and Farrow still in the captains’ chairs, charting a path for the next 25 years and beyond. They remain one of the few entrepreneurs left in the senior living industry who are still involved in the daily operation of the company they founded. “A quarter century ago, Franklin and I cast a vision to bring a better senior living offering to complement skilled care in the Southeast, and as we look back across those years, I believe we have accomplished that vision and more,” stated Greg Vital, president of Morning Pointe. “It has been an honor to provide compassionate care wrapped in hospitality and socialization to thousands of residents throughout these 25 wonderful years.” Morning Pointe Senior Living’s 36 senior campuses in five states across the Southeast focus on two niche services: assisted living or personal care in Kentucky and Alzheimer’s memory care. Innovations like a farm-to-table dining program, in-house physical and occupational therapy partnership programs,
along with a patented Meaningful Day™ memory care program for residents living with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia have added value to an already thriving business model. This innovation—combined with improvements in healthcare and technology—has helped Morning Pointe associates continue to efficiently serve a growing population of seniors. The Morning Pointe team is happy to serve seniors in six cities throughout Kentucky. There are locations in Danville, Frankfort, Lexington, Louisville, Richmond and Russell. Three new locations are coming on board in the southeast to further Morning Pointe’s 25-year mission of providing a rewarding senior living experience with easily accessible clinical services to help residents make the most of every day. “It’s been an amazing journey,” said Vital. “Here’s to 25 more years of serving the greatest generation and providing a wonderful career to many healthcare associates.” Morning Pointe invites the greater public into its yearlong anniversary celebration through a special campaign called ‘25,000 Touches.’ Through service to seniors and in the spirit of volunteerism and giving back, Morning Pointe has a goal to “touch” 25,000 community partners and volunteers throughout 2022.
