f you heard that a home had grandiose corridors, guest rooms galore, and a Hollywood-style pool hangout, you might think you were in Southern California, but this 7,303-square-foot mansion sits in the City of Anchorage. The 8-bedroom, 5-bath Colonial Revival “Bellewood” mansion is on the market for $4.85 million and Terri Bass, a realtor for Lenihan Sotheby's International Realty, gave us the tour.

T
he structure was originally built as a summer home in Anchorage by John Bayless in 1869 and then was transformed and expanded to its current square footage by the second owner, Charles Ross, with the assistance of architect Frederick Morgan. Current owner Kevin Grangier purchased Bellewood 18 years ago and brought it into the 21st Century but carefully restored all the historic elements like the random width hardwood floors, five fireplaces, and the extensive crown molding and fine architectural detail throughout. “(Kevin) paid attention to the historic value of the home, but made it up to today’s standards,” Terri says.

Just past
the massive Doric columns, 30-foot imported Belgium fountain and circular limestone and brick driveway, you’ll see a 19th-Century Kentucky gem. Opening the door, you are welcomed into the grand foyer that displays several gracious rooms, including an African Gumwood paneled library with floor-to-ceiling bookcases and an expansive dining room with a hand-blocked Zuber mural. “My favorite room is the one I resort to with my pets on cold or rainy days or simply after a very long day working,” Kevin says. “(The library) is spectacular-it showcases nearly 50 of my favorite paintings and artifacts.”

K
evin, a restaurateur, recently completed the kitchen and butler’s pantry renovation. It’s truly a chef’s dream kitchen with a Viking oven with warming drawers, six and eight burner ranges, two subzero refrigerators, a grill, Viking and Bosch dishwashers, a built-in Miele espresso maker and a pressure cooker. One wall even rotates by the push of a button displaying and hiding herbs and spices. Kevin spent his days in the home entertaining guests, whether it’s a catered party or an event for a small group, so the wet bar is also fully equipped with Viking
appliances. There are four guest rooms and a bath on the third floor to offer plenty of room for Derby guests. The primary bedroom on the second floor offers beautiful views of the lush landscape, an ensuite bath and a dressing area. All the bathrooms were renovated with marble finishes, including extravagant vanities. “The renovations to both the interior of Bellewood and its various structures have always been a pleasure,” says Kevin. “I have looked at each project as the opportunity to go back in time and to understand its foundation. Knowing the history has allowed me to build upon it and improve it.”

K
evin, a collector of fine art and paintings, has lavishly decorated the entire home. The furniture was hand-picked to compliment the historic feel. “It allows it to have that wonderful, grand, old feel,” says Terri. Kevin says the most frequent comment he gets about the house is how familiar and comfortable it feels. “Even with its history, beauty and architectural integrity, the house is relaxing and welcoming,” he says. “The nearly 13-foot ceilings and walls serve as a showcase that embodies more than 200 pieces of art and hundreds of 18th- and 19th-Century-period furnishings. It all serves as a beautiful reminder of how fortunate I have been to live in and share it every day. I look forward to Bellewood’s next chapter to those who are charged with writing its next historic chapter.”

O
utside, you’ll find that the home sits on nearly 10 acres and offers a quiet, private retreat and outdoor opportunities to get away and entertain guests under the brick and stone terraces that lead to the completely rebuilt guest cottage and outdoor covered kitchen. “The grounds of Bellewood are what initially drew me to the stunning property that sits at the peak of its rolling lawns,” Kevin says. “I remember the day I first drove Bellewood’s long, winding drive, and the first time I gazed upon its nearly 30-foot col-
umns. I remember thinking, ‘This has to be mine; it will give me something to love and to take care of for a lifetime.” The guest cottage holds a limestone fireplace, copper roof, kitchen with high-end appliances, bar, marble-finished bathroom, outdoor shower and second-floor bedroom. “I’ve most enjoyed entertaining at Bellewood, both on a grand scale and smaller-just hanging out with friends on the weekend or smoking cigars at the cottage with its massive stone fireplaces,” says Kevin.

he outdoor kitchen and living areas are expansive entertaining spaces with a stone fireplace oven, master grill and large outdoor bar. Much like a Hollywood feel, the relaxing in-ground pool is away from the home and private for guests. An 8,000-square-foot finished basement, three-stall stable and four-car garage polish off the estate. “The Bellewood chapter of my life documents what has to be the most beautiful thus far in my book,” Kevin says. “It surely marks me as one of the most blessed individuals in Jefferson County, if not the Commonwealth. I am so fortunate to have experienced this incredible property for nearly 18 years and to have shared it with so many during that time.”

J
ohn Waller started Waller Design Group in 1992 and has won over 15 awards, including many years at Homearama and the 2020 Best of the Building Industry Association (BIA) Award for Best Full-House Remodel for a home on Glen Park Road in Glenview. “I was very fortunate to work with great clients and the very talented J. Waddell Interiors. Thanks to my brother Tom Waller for referring me to the project. 2020 was an extremely challenging year for our industry. To win this award for such a major project, I believe, speaks volumes about the professionalism and dedication my team has for our clients. This marks the third year in a row that I have won an award for my efforts and innovation. After 28 years in the industry, it is extremely satisfying to be still recognized.”
OWNER JOHN WALLER “Waller Design Group is a full-service home design, build, and renovation company.” John has a dual designation as a registered builder and registered remodeler. In his late twenties, he built his first spec home in the Brooks of Hickory Hollow subdivision. John acquired two contracts for his work on that house. He won multiple awards for his first Homearama project in 1996. When the Great Recession hit in 2007, it wiped out John Waller’s multi-million line of credit, and he had to start over. But this did not deter John from building his business right back to its complete turnkey service and adding more interior design and cabinetry. Cabinets have become big business for Waller Design Group with a comprehensive selection from prefab to high-end hand craftsmanship. “The cabinets have opened an avenue to working with other interior designers and builders on their projects.” John’s mother was an interior designer and a significant influence on his own design aesthetic. “I call it barefoot elegance,” John says. “It has a sophisticated look that is elegant for entertaining but comfortable for everyday living. Classic never goes out of style.” For Waller Design Group, “quality is in the details.” His favorite compliment is customers telling him, “We didn’t think we could afford you.” John assures prospective clients that “bespoke, custom design doesn’t have to be expensive if you’re with the right firm.” John Waller is passionate about his business. “I’m incredibly fortunate to get to do what I do. I wake up early every morning, and I love it!” For more information, follow @JPWallerDesignGroupLLC on Facebook and @wallerdesigngroup on Instagram.

L
ouisville is experiencing an “environmental coming of age” with Waterfront Botanical Gardens, according to Director of Horticulture & Education Jamie Burghardt. “This ever– evolving collection of curated plants will serve as a resource of education and inspiration for generations to come.” Jamie grew up in a family that was into both edible and ornamental gardening. He originally wanted to study marine biology – until he realized how much math was involved! Jamie turned his attention to biology, environmental horticulture, and public horticulture instead. In his current role, Jamie’s focus is on building a healthy relationship between plant life and the environment to include: HORTICULTURE – selection, acquisition, planning, and nurturing of the plant life EDUCATION – both active and passive, with classes, workshops, programs, school outreach, plant labels, audio tours, garden guides, and more
Jamie sees Waterfront Botanical Gardens as a unique opportunity to see a brand new urban botanical garden from its infancy. “The youngest urban botanical garden before this one was started in the early 1960s, and the oldest is from the 1910s.” Waterfront Botanical Gardens is “being built in two strata of history.” The site was formerly home to blue–collar neighborhoods decimated by floods, becoming the Ohio Street Dump. The dump was eventually closed and capped with soil, which would lie fallow and overrun with invasive plant species for over thirty years. What was once a vital community, then a dump, then a tangle of ivy and weeds, is now a place of beauty. “Beauty can be subjective,” says Jamie, “but this opportunity for connection with nature and civic pride is undeniable.” For example, the forthcoming Japanese Garden will be a place to exhale, for “stopping to appreciate color, texture, and form and draw from memory fragrance or flavor. It is the beauty of consciousness.”

The current iteration of the Master Plan for Waterfront Botanical Gardens has three major phases: PHASE 1A – The Graeser Family Education Center and Founders’ Garden
Courtesy photo
Asking Jamie to choose a favorite plant or area of the garden depends on the season, the day, the light, and performance. On a Monday in mid–May, a tall, yellow bearded iris in bloom caught his eye. (Yellow is Jamie’s favorite color.) But the Garden also has its challenges. “With the imperfect soil types and exposure of sun and wind, we are learning what will tolerate the elements and grow best in hot and dry weather versus cool and wet. You have to adjust expectations of performance in a living museum of native and non–native plants.”

PHASE 1B – Outdoor Education Gardens, including the Edible Gardens and Water Wall, Native Gardens, Pollinator Gardens, the Rounsavall Family Foundation Plaza Fountain, and Beargrass Creek Pathway PHASE 1C – The Garden Expansion with the Ellen T. Leslie Botanical Classrooms, Tree Allée, and Beargrass Creek Overlook PHASE 1D – The Garden Expansion Continues with the Japanese Garden. PHASE 2A – Welcome to the Visitors’ Center (“with downtown skyline views and a green roof”), Entry Garden, and Water Filtration Garden. PHASE 2B – The Garden Grows with the Children’s Garden and the Planted Trellis. PHASE 3 – “the crown jewel” Conservatory, “a massive oversized greenhouse with non–native plants representing different parts of the world”
