Letter from the publisher
Hello, dear reader. It’s good to see you.
T
hese days, it’s all about how we are adapting.
When the Kentucky Derby moved to Sept. 5th, this issue now became our “Derby Issue.” And we have adapted.
KEITH YARBER Publisher/founder
Just a few weeks ago, our Covid-19 stats were promising. As of press time, the trend is not our friend, and the Governor has limited groups of people to 10. We all need to flatten that curve again. Pronto! All of us need some positivity and inspiration, and that is what TOPS magazine is all about every month. TOPS is here to be an escape from the relentless torrent of negative news. Our Fashion Coordinator, Sarah Mitchell has put together some “must-have” fashion looks designed for any event you may be attending to celebrate the Derby this year. You may be headed to millionaires row or a backyard party, and we have the looks for you to feel your best. No matter how you celebrate this historic Derby, you should do it with style! Editor-In-Chief Kathy Thuerbach is Keeping the Conversation going with an interview of Eden Bridgeman Sklenar. She tells about the Black and African-America historical influences on Derby, and the celebrations surrounding it (WeDerby). Together, we can all salute this history in the “greatest two minutes in sports.” And this month’s featured home is a stunning home built by Mike Blacketer in the Coves neighborhood. This home has been viewed in music videos and will soon be seen on “Say Yes to the Dress”. We know that you will love your tour of this fabulous residence! And of course, there’s much more inside. Let me wrap up about wearing a mask. Our TOPS employees have been coming back into the office voluntarily. We have a staff meeting weekly, masks required, in our conference room. If staffers aren’t comfortable coming in, we Zoom them in. A couple of weeks ago, one of our staffers, who had been out of state, was positive for Covid-19, and didn’t know it at the time. Once she found out, we all got tested, and so far, everyone has come back negative. Truthfully, we were all a little freaked out. I know that if none of us had been wearing masks and had let our guard down, because “we all know each other “... I believe the virus could have been easily transmitted. We are all believers now. Also, a special encouragement to all the parents who will shortly have to balance work, NTI, and family life. Blessings to you all. Until next month.

merica’s Junior Miss scholarship program changed its name a decade ago to Distinguished Young Women. The 2020 national finals were held online in June and out of 50 state representatives, the Distinguished Young Woman of America is… drumroll… Louisville, Kentucky’s own Elif Ozyurekoglu! Elif is a 2020 graduate of duPont Manual High School. She won the Kentucky competition in early January, held at the University of Kentucky, where she played a classical piano piece by C.P.E. Bach for her talent. During the weeklong rehearsal period she was able to “create strong bonds with 31 other girls, representing their counties,” she said. “We formed incredible relationships.” A choreographed fitness routine and individual self-expression responses were also part of the state and national programs. Elif submitted a video clip of her talent for the nationals, this time “Fantaisie-Impromptu” by Frederic Chopin. She was awarded a total of $41,750 in cash scholarships at the state and national levels, and won awards at nationals in the interview, scholastics and self-expression categories.
For the next year, she will interact with the alumni network and be the national representative for the program. At the same time, she plans to attend Columbia University in New York City to major in biomedical engineering with a minor in entrepreneurship. “I am very interested in learning about biomed and am hoping to become a reconstructive plastic surgeon.” A first-generation American, Elif and her younger sister were born and raised in Louisville. Their parents, Dr. Tuna and Dr. Mesude Ozyurekoglu, moved to Kentucky 20 years ago from Turkey. “I’m very grateful for the values of hard work my parents taught me and for helping me become a well-rounded and resilient person,” Elif said. She has always been involved in a ton of extracurricular activities involving math and science, public speaking and community participation, music and swimming, so it’s fitting to add a national title to her resume, Distinguished Young Woman of America. She wants others to experience it too, saying, “I encourage all young girls who are rising seniors to be part of the upcoming program.”

2020
Goes Virtual You’ve been spending a lot more time in your home lately, right? If you’re looking for remodeling ideas and the local businesses that can make them happen, Homearama 2020 is here. BY KATHIE STAMPS • COURTESY PHOTOS
T
his is the 53rd year of Homearama, an event produced by the Building Industry Association of Greater Louisville. BIA’s annual showcase is going to be a little different this year when it comes to how, when and how much. Instead of 30,000 or so people visiting a site like Norton Commons in person for a weekend, Homearama is taking place online. Virtual tours of the nine featured homes are available around the clock until next year’s event at Norton Commons, and there’s no charge.
20 TOPS LOUISVILLE | August 2020
“We're glad we have the technology that allows us to host the show virtually, something we didn’t have 53 years ago,” said Juva Barber, executive vice president of BIA of Greater Louisville. “Homearama is one of the oldest running single-site tours in the country.” The properties have been purchased but the homeowners haven’t moved in yet, so the virtual tours of Homearama are giving everyone the opportunity to see these custom homes and the collaboration between homeowners and designers on cabinetry, tile, fixtures and every other detail, along with the design and architecture of each house itself. “Norton Commons is a new urbanist development,” she said. “It has its own special
feeling.” The mixed-use community has residential and rental properties, commercial spots like restaurants and small businesses, a post office, plenty of walkable paths, and an area for Food Truck Fridays, Farmers Market on Sunday, as well as other events throughout the year. “Homearama is a community event,” Barber said. “It is a longstanding program that brings the community together to view the latest trends in home design and construction techniques. It’s an opportunity for people to not only get ideas for their own homes, but to find the professionals to bring those ideas to life. The Building Industry Association of Greater Louisville is a voluntary trade
association with 2,000 members, the third largest local home builders association in the United States. It has been around since the late 1940s and a couple of decades later began producing the annual Homearama to showcase newly built homes. BIA members throughout the Greater Louisville area include builders, remodelers, developers, engineers, designers, lenders, and all manner of vendors involved with construction, from those who supply materials to the people who drive bulldozers on site. Part of the pride of home ownership is making the home fit your lifestyle, and keeping it updated at the speed of life. Homearama shows the latest design trends being implemented by local builders, designers and other local business owners. Some of the nine homes featured in Norton Commons are furnished and some are not. During the virtual Homearama tour, click on any home to watch a video all the way through or pause it at any time for specific information on products and providers by clicking on the colored round tags throughout each home. Find the BIA logo in these informational tags to register for a chance to win prizes, like an exclusive VIP tour for the 2021 Homearama.

The
Hat Doctor
Ilana Kogan, MD BY DAWN ANDERSON PHOTOS BY DICK ARNSPIGER
T
he Hat Doctor is more than just a catchy name for a millinery business. Ilana Kogan, MD, is also a full-time radiologist working at her practice on the front lines of imaging during an ongoing pandemic. Along with the entire Commonwealth, Ilana is looking forward to Derby Week, especially this year. Derby 146 may be different in many ways, but the event always holds a special place in Dr. Kogan’s heart. After all, her attendance at Kentucky Derby 131 is how she ”fell in love” with all things Derby. ”It has to be the best people-watching anywhere.” Ilana Kogan is originally from New York City and moved to Kentucky in 2005 to attend the University of Louisville School of Medicine. That year was her first Kentucky Derby which she attended with some of her classmates. On student budgets, Ilana opted to make her own hat and her friends’ hats by reconstructing and embellishing hats she would find on sale. She later sold those hats on eBay and made a little extra money for schooling. She began crafting her own designs in subsequent years and throughout her residency at Ohio State. More than a hobby, The Hat Doctor morphed into a business partially out necessity, helping pay down her significant student loan debts.
50 TOPS LOUISVILLE | August 2020
The 2020 fashion trends for this Derby lean toward more vibrant, bold, bright colors as opposed to pastels. Many Hat Doctor clients are requesting either monochromatic looks employing different textures or ”wild multicolored” hats. Comfort is an important factor this year in case mask-wearing is recommended or required. Regarding headwear silhouettes, Ilana prefers ”more creative shapes,” not unlike the avant-garde designs worn in Australia and Great Britain. Fascinators comprise approximately 60% of the business and allow her to ”go wild with the shape” more so than brimmed hats.
“
I will NEVER make the same hat twice
Ilana does not duplicate her designs. ”I will never make the same hat twice.” The Hat Doctor hats are also surprisingly affordable especially considering they are handmade, unique works of art. Her hats have won awards including the most sophisticated hat at the 2011 Steeplechase and 2nd place in the 2020 Del Mar Opening Day Hat Contest. She never dreamed she would be in the fashion scene, but encourages others, "Do what you love and you can make it happen!"
IF YOU GO
The Hat Doctor can be found at TheHatDoctor Etsy shop, on Facebook, and @the.hat.doctor on Instagram. See Dr. Kogan’s designs in person at Lulubelles Boutique in Norton Commons, Rodeo Drive in Holiday Manor, White’s Mercantile in Nulu, and The Swanky Shoppe in Elizabethtown.

WeDerby INCLUSIVE OF KENTUCKY DERBY PAST, PRESENT,
AND FUTURE BY DAWN ANDERSON • COURTESY PHOTOS
52 TOPS LOUISVILLE | August 2020
™
S
Since 2003, Louisville Men’s Basketball star and NBA guard Junior Bridgeman has hosted The Trifecta™ Gala, among other exclusive charity events during Derby Week, attracting celebrities, professional athletes, and movers and shakers of the business world. In that spirit, a new generation of the Bridgeman family has created WeDerby™: “Birthed from history, crowned from the start, WeDerby™ celebrates Our Story in the ‘greatest two minutes in sports.’ As we honor the past, we will write the future together.” Junior Bridgeman’s daughter, Eden Bridgeman Sklenar, whom you may recall as resplendent in her yellow gown on the cover of our June 2020 issue, took some time with us to explain how WeDerby™ and the Kentucky Derby belong to everyone.
WE WE WE WE WE WE
DRESS. BET. DRINK. PARTY. DANCE. DERBY.
Eden currently resides in Columbus, Ohio, as Chief Marketing Officer of Manna Inc., an affiliate of restaurant concepts such as Wendy’s, Blaze Pizza, Fazoli’s, Golden Corral, Mark’s Feed Store, and Napa River Grill. She was born in Los Angeles, California and attended Louisville Male High School and the University of Louisville. She obtained her MBA in Entrepreneurship at Loyola University Chicago’s Quinlan School of Business. Along with her brothers, Eden has picked up the mantle of their father’s tremendous business legacy. They are taking his inspiration further by creating brands and events that speak to younger people.

WeDerby™ was born out of the Black and African American historical influences on the Kentucky Derby and its many celebrations. Their stories include and go far beyond the jockeys of 1875 through the early 1900s. “There are wonderful stories throughout generational family experiences that cross color lines,” says Eden, “I was surprised how little I understood about their influence in Louisville and all over the world.” WeDerby™ aims to bring the personal experience of the Derby to a point of unity for a cultural celebration that extends through the year. It begins with history appreciated, then reimagined and reinterpreted for a new generation: “We dress. We bet. We drink. We party. We dance. We Derby.”

Fashion, media, and art collide in a celebration of all things Derby with the WeDerby™ store and merchandise, “All-inclusive fashion celebrating the time-honored tradition of the Kentucky Derby in a modern era of human expression and social justice.” Eden hopes young people find their voice through their expressions of the Kentucky Derby experience, “We want people to see Derby as an action word, a cultural driver to create necessary conversations and expand understanding.” The merchandise offers an individual their own “crowning moment” like roses on a pink hoodie, a casual way to wear jockey silks, or The Shoe Surgeon’s Kentucky Derby Air Jordan 1. As for the future of WeDerby™, Eden hopes “to continue to bring people together in a positive way.” There are plans to launch a podcast to maintain cultural conversations year-round. They will expand the fashion line into hats in partnership with Loreta Corsetti Millinery of Chicago. Look forward to more storytelling in conjunction with the Kentucky Derby Museum. Taking pages from history, “We will continue to curate from a fashion standpoint to pay homage in a modern way.” Eden continues, “No matter who you are or where you live, you can create your own story through this historic race. Others want to hear your story and celebrate in a unifying way.“ She points out that the delay of the Derby this year means a shorter countdown to May of next year. Eden encourages everyone to reach out through the website and social media to tell their stories.

Seeing is Believing at Rolling Stock Specialty Auto Sales

n a discreet warehouse building on a deadend street in Middletown, an extraordinary place is hidden in plain view. Seeing is believing at Rolling Stock Specialty Auto Sales. Owner and Founder Cary Donovan presides over a warehouse showroom that you might describe as a cross between a boutique and a museum. "It's always 75 degrees and sunny in my world," he says. He isn't kidding. From the moment you enter, a rush of dopamine swirls in your brain. As Frank Sinatra sings through the speakers, you walk past a vintage pinball machine, a desk made from Porsche wheels, and an oldtime barber chair…then you become awestruck over some of the most beautiful automobiles you will ever see in your life. Pristine exotic and classic cars sit next to what might be your future daily driver. The walls are lined with poster size photographs of Cary's father in his racecar driving days back in the '60s. "This car is in the Corvette
58 TOPS LOUISVILLE | August 2020
Museum," Cary says, indicating the racecar in one framed photo. A beautiful 1967 Camaro that belonged to his dad sits in a position of esteem in the showroom. There are also mementos of the legendary Sam Swope, including his 2009 Harley Roadglide, his leather Lifetime Member Harley Owners Group vest in a frame, and his cherry red 1975 Pontiac Grandville convertible. Mr. Swope was a man of such character that his name remains synonymous with trust and benevolence even after his passing. After a lifelong career in the automobile business, Cary left the Sam Swope Auto Group when it sold to a conglomerate in 2015. Cary then spent two years as a consultant for Cox Automotive, the corporation that owns Auto Trader, Manheim, VAuto, and Kelly Blue Book. Missing the excitement of the cars and personal relationships with customers, Cary retired and pursued his dream, opening Rolling Stock. The idea
behind that name is that when you purchase a car right, you are truly driving and enjoying your investment- a literal Rolling Stock. Today, Cary runs his dealership precisely the way he wants, and that's great news for his customers. "We do everything by appointment only," says Cary. "If there's one thing I know, it's that clients don't want to be sold. They want a trusted advisor to guide them. I'm here to give them my undivided time and treat their interest seriously." Rolling Stock is a family affair, where Cary's wife, Stephanie, is CFO and office manager. Their daughter, Sloane, photographs all the vehicles and manages the RollingStockAuto.com website as well as digital
and social media advertisements. Jennifer Wells, a colleague from the Swope days, handles all the title work, which is quite a feat at Rolling Stock. They have sold vehicles to clients in 45 of 50 states (even Alaska twice). Licensing, registration, and titling laws are different in almost every state, so Jennifer's years of expertise ensure accurate transfers for customers and earn her the "GENIUS" nameplate that decorates her office door. As many of the vehicles are purchased and shipped all over the country, some of Rolling Stock customers never have the totally unique experience of visiting the showroom personally. Still, many satisfied customers are on their second and third purchases with Rolling Stock, including some with those
purchases all in the same day. This is because Cary personally buys and oversees every vehicle's reconditioning as if he would keep it for himself. "I think of myself as somewhat like a foster parent to these automobiles," he says, wryly. He believes in finding the right car that fits a person's personality and character. It's all about helping people obtain their dream vehicles in a fun way, full of integrity and transparency. Not just a specialty car but a specialty experience. "I want it to be unique, fun, and laid back'" Cary says. There's no doubt that he has succeeded, and seeing is believing. Just read his reviews on such sites as Google, CarFax, CarGurus, and AutoTrader, then call him to make an appointment. 

COVID Couldn’t Stop
this Couple From Saying “I Do” BY TAYLOR RILEY PHOTOS BY WE CHOOSE THE MOON PHOTOGRAPHY

drian wed Ned, a JCPS teacher, on June 27. The couple met when they lived on the same dorm floor freshman year at the College of Wooster in Ohio. They were good friends for four years until late in their senior year when they started dating. Adrian, who was born and raised in Louisville, wanted to return to the area in which she grew up, so Ned followed her to pursue the Teach Kentucky program. Fast forward a few years later, and the couple had to make a huge decision--whether or not to get married during a tumultuous time.
The couple ultimately decided to have a beautiful dinner and ceremony under a gazebo surrounded by potted plants and string lights. “Everything was very minimal,” says Adrian. “Just things we had on hand.” Also minimal was the guest list; the couple only had four other people in attendance as well as Ned’s family who were on video call.

ed’s twin brother Max was the couple’s officiant. Ned’s immediate family, all talented musicians, arranged a recording of “Vito’s Ordination Song” by Sufjan Stevens, which was played during the ceremony. Special touches sprinkled the night, like when Ned wore his grandfather’s shoes and socks that were given to him as a groomsman gift at his older brother’s wedding the year prior, and when Adrian wore earrings made by one of her closest friends. Their dog Pippin even stole the bouquet, made from kale, arugula and rosemary from the yard, and took several laps of joy around the yard with it. “Our wedding was so much more special than we thought it would be considering the circumstances,” says Adrian, who is an avid gardener.

8 Seconds. That is the average attention span of a person (and a goldfish, in case you’re wondering). Those 8 seconds is all the time your website has to generate enough interest to gain a new customer. This is why it’s essential for companies to provide a positive online experience for their customers. A user-friendly website ensures that each visitor to your website has an easy, effortless, and pleasant experience. But what are the aspects of a website that make it more likely to generate new business? A user-friendly website involves a combination of readability, navigation, mobile-optimization, and load time — all of which enable a user to quickly and efficiently navigate the site.
You Have 8 Seconds...
USE IT!
Think Mobile-Friendly Now more than ever, users are interacting with websites through their mobile devices. In fact, Google says that 61% of users are unlikely to return to a site if they had trouble accessing it through mobile, with 40% actually leaving to visit a competitor’s site instead. In fact, Google now indexes and ranks all websites based exclusively on the mobile version. This means that having a website that is not mobile-friendly will negatively affect your search engine visibility. With all of this in mind, mobile optimization should be a requirement during your website’s design and update phases.
Readability Matters
Load Time is Key
Readability is synonymous with “skim-ability.” A user should be able to quickly skim for keywords and phrases to locate useful information.
Page speed is the amount of time it takes for a website’s components to load, and it’s a giant factor in the overall user-friendly website experience. Typically, you should aim for a load speed of no more than 2 to 3 seconds. Anything beyond that can drive users away from the site — and that’s not even the worst of it.
ENHANCE YOUR WEBSITE’S SKIM-ABILITY:
1 2 3 4 5 6
Divide paragraphs liberally to create more separation between thoughts Make your navigation panel easy to access and clearly organized Use visual elements and colors to differentiate between sections of information Separate sections with clear headers that accurately describe section content Use dynamic media like photos, videos, and audio clips to engage visitors Choose an easy-to-read web-friendly font so your content is legible on any device
Poor load times can also have a serious negative impact on your website’s SEO. Search engines have started considering page speed as a ranking factor when indexing pages. Snail speed is not ideal if you are trying to create an appealing user experience for your visitors. Bad user experience can ultimately be crippling to your business’s website — both online and off. In fact, 57% of users say they will not recommend a business with a poorly designed mobile site.

he team of design professionals at Living Spaces all share one thing in common: They love to reimagine spaces. Because the bench of talent is deep--from degreed interior designers, to renovation specialists, certified stagers and move managers--they can step into a home design project at any stage in the game. Living Spaces is an excellent resource for homeowners who need professional expertise and insight creating a space that is not only aesthetically pleasing, but liveable. They even do homes that are eye-catching enough to sell faster and for more money. “We work with the homeowner to develop the overall design which may mean creating a vision board and floor plan,” owner Lyn Mabry says. “We often manage the overall project which can include selecting flooring, paint colors, countertops and tile, everything right down to the light fixtures. There are so many moving parts and we can help with any one of those projects, coordinating one phase to another. Sometimes people are looking for one-stop shopping; they need help with the creative and the nuts and bolts.” Their services are staging, interior design, renovation, and move management. If a realtor, buyer, or seller come to Living Spaces for help, Lyn’s team will first meet them for an initial consultation for an overview of the project. “We are very transparent,” Lyn says about what sets her company apart from the rest. Living Spaces charges by the hour, does not up-charge, and passes on discounts and vendors that are vetted and trusted.

Lyn started Living Spaces By Lyn 12 years ago. After two to three years by herself, she now has a team of four certified stagers: three interior designers (one who is a certified designer and stager), one certified move manager, and an administrative assistant, who work together as a one-stop shop for all of her customers’ home design needs. When Lyn began her company, she was working in another field but because her mother was a well-known interior designer in Nashville, she also had the knack of staging homes on local tours. People around Lyn said, “This is what you ought to be doing,” she recalls, so she moved her family to Louisville from Nashville, bought a condo, rehabbed it, and

began Living Spaces, after receiving two certifications and joining a local staging group. After several years, two local designers joined Lyn’s team, which was getting calls left and right from clients with homes she had previously staged asking her to help with new projects. “The demand was there,” Lyn says about her company, which also added an interior designer who specializes in rehabbed homes. Some clients who meet with the team just need a coach or validation. “They want their visions to shine through,” says Lyn. Other clients need more hand-holding, so Living Spaces will connect the realtor or owner with subcontractors the
company works with regularly for coordinated jobs. The designers at Living Spaces believe in honoring the space and styles of each individual client. “We work with the things our clients love... the colors and objects that nourish them. We are there to help them pull it all together,” Lyn says. If you have a renovation, staging, or design project, Lyn suggests you call Living Spaces before you let the job take over your life. “It’s hard to back up and analyze what it needs,” says Lyn. “A lot of times, people can't do that … they can’t put it together,” she says. “That’s why they call us.” Contact Living Spaces by Lyn at livingspacesbyLyn.com.

in the Garden: The dog days of summer BY DAWN ANDERSON
August is ripening grain in the fields blowing hot and sunny, the scent of tree-ripened peaches, of hot buttered sweet corn on the cob. Vivid dahlias fling huge tousled blossoms through gardens and joe-pye-weed dusts the meadow purple. – J EAN HERSEY
T
he dog days of summer are upon us, and the gardens can be a mixed bag of abundance, rot, beauty, and wilt. There is more to late summer than watering and weeding. Now is the time to prepare for fall and to plant the bulbs and seeds that will blossom and flower next spring. It’s not too late to take in the colorful, textured scenery provided by some of August’s top flowers and plants: dahlias, showy sedum, Mexican bush sage, ornamental grasses, and end-of-themonth garden chrysanthemums. Get busy now and be prepared for the upcoming seasons. But make some time to sit in the shade and enjoy the fruits of your labor.
General Tips Composting and mulching help to beat the heat and weeds, and prepare your gardens for fall planting. Water deeply but strategically at the base of plants in the early morning or early evening. During dry spells, soak shrubs enough to moisten the soil 8-10 inches deep. Don’t neglect to water your trees, even if they have been around for ages. Hanging baskets and containers dry out quickly and will need watering at least once or twice a day in the heat of this month. Using larger containers and a soilless

potting mix, repot houseplants that have spent the summer outdoors and move them back inside to adjust to less sun exposure. August presents your last best chance to heavily prune hedges and evergreens and have them harden off before going dormant in late fall. Late trimming might result in new growth vulnerable to freezing.
Flowers and Herbs To encourage more blooms and thicken up stems, deadhead, cut back, and feed flowers and roses. Divide and transplant bloomed spring and summer-blooming perennials. Replacement annuals can freshen up the flower show and offer an opportunity to experiment with growing ones you’ve never tried before. Mid-morning hours are best for taking cuttings for new plants or gathering herbs and flowers for drying and preserving, after the morning dew has dried but before the wilting heat of the afternoon. Herbs can also be made into pesto and frozen. Start pansy seeds indoors and plant outdoors once grown for spring blooms. Poppy seeds can now be sown directly into the ground for next year’s beautiful flowers. August is a perfect time for ordering autumn flower seeds and shopping for bulbs.
Planting flowers and garlic from bulbs in the fall will yield a fine harvest in springtime. Use plastic golf tees to color-code and mark the location of all these dormant plants.
Vegetables Harvest your produce and hoe often to deter weeds. Share with neighbors if you won’t eat it all. Remains of harvested crops can now be tilled under or composted. Keep the fresh salads coming by planting more lettuce and spinach, along with radishes, turnips, and beets. Planting a fall crop of peas late in the month and twice as deep will fix nitrogen into the soil for planting in the spring. Freezing shelled peas can bring you a taste of spring in the dead of winter. Plant fall vegetable starts and transplants.
Fruits Cover plants with netting to protect ripening fruits. Thornless blackberries and fall-bearing red raspberries are ripening now. Help prevent insect infestation by removing any fallen fruit from fruit trees. Fertilize citrus trees after harvesting. For reference, Louisville is located in USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 6b.

he influences behind the Sherwin Williams “Heart” palette are many. The team pulled from various genres, styles and emotions to create an earthy, harmonious vibe. From Bauhaus to boho, this palette is a fusion of modern design and intergenerational appeal. Verde Marrón is a curious hue. At first glance, it is a lovely, welcoming brown. But upon closer inspection, tones of green and yellow pop out, creating a look that is art-driven, yet grounded. It’s a complex color that will bring both style and sensibility to any space.

When thinking about how to pair Verde Marrón, think pink. Pink-toned accent colors will bring out the warmth in the room and add a softness that might otherwise get lost. Anchor the look with a deep brown or black for contrast. The many-layered inspiration behind Verde Marrón begs for artistic furnishings. Angular lines, sharp edges and simple shapes will help this color sing. Pieces with minimalist structure will certainly make a statement here, but don’t forget to bring elements of nature into the mix to balance the look. Where would you use this color? It would be an ideal pick for a den or reading nook; the earthy quality will help you relax while letting your imagination run wild. It would also be an exciting choice for a dining room.

John grew up watching his grandfather craft furniture for family members. Then as a teenager, John began working with his father on hardwood flooring. After some time playing football at Campbellsville College and as a cheerleader at the University of Louisville, John left to pursue his lifelong passion and preserve the family legacy, perfecting “the sandand-finish process that is still the most sought after flooring today.” His venture, Southern Vintage, and its subsidiary company, Flooring & Granite Designs, use both reclaimed and raw materials sourced at their family farm in Fisherville.

ome say the “Cove,” a massive 10,419-square-foot, 5-bedroom, 6-full and 2-partial-bathroom, California-style home on Reserve Cove in Oldham County, is magical. Rolling up to the neighborhood, one is surrounded by wooded forests and black and white wooden fences. Once inside the Reserve on Rose Island subdivision, and in front of the home itself, you’ll notice it has a contemporary feel from the outside, as the owners and their many guests enjoy sunrises and sunsets at the private, enchanting back patio terrace overlooking the Ohio River. The home was built in 2010 for an executive of a local company and was always meant for hosting lavish parties for up to 250 guests. The current owners use the 42-feetby-20-feet infinity pool and hot tub framed by two gas fire bowls, outdoor tiled bar, and kitchen space with a barbeque grill, cooking stove, sink with running water, refrigerator, ice maker and storage drawers for events and private parties with VIP invites and celebrity guests. The current owners claim the space is filled with “entertainment, productions,
mystery, art, love, and excitement surrounding everything that makes Louisville great.” Open up the 10-foot custom-made mahogany and rod iron front door, and you can see the incredible river view that is carried through all major rooms of the house, including the living room, dining room, kitchen/breakfast area, family room, and master bedroom. The raised ceilings extend from one end of the hallway to another with cove lighting from the top down. There are special design effects from original architect Frank Pierce, including a marble and granite medallion in the floor of the front entrance, black walnut wood floors in the living room and dining room, imported French limestone tile throughout, specially-designed high ceilings, including a custom-designed plaster ceiling and faux painting. “It’s a unique and beautiful home,” says builder Mike Blacketer. Mike built the home for the original owners, who “had an eye for exquisite things,” in a little over a year, after six to seven months of drawing out an architectural plan, he says.
The plan consisted of incorporating photos the original owners liked and their list of rooms and sizes of areas, according to Frank. The kitchen was “a big deal” for the original owners, so Frank remembers he had to work around the area including making sure the family had a large island, pantry, and the perfect sink. “It was just a matter of working it out,” Frank says.

he home is full of luxury finishes like Group-F-Granite on the main bar and Murano glass tile across the front of the bar with a double waterfall edge. The foyer and kitchen were outfitted with polished high-grade limestone, and the outside area holds a lifted porch with arches that won’t obstruct the light going into the inside of the home or shield the view of the river. “We tried to get as much as we humanly could on the back of the house so you could see the view,” Mike says. Frank agrees, saying “It works really well for parties. It’s very serene.”

The kitchen is modern and includes a double oven with warming drawer, wide oversized built-in refrigerator and Wolfe/Miele appliances. The kitchen opens to an expansive family room with a floor to ceiling dramatic stone fireplace and White River trim moulding on the mantle. “It’s an unusual site,” Frank says about the house. “There are a lot of unique details.”

he first floor has the master bedroom with a sitting area, expansive master bath and oversized his-and-hers closet. Also on the bottom floor is an in-law suite located near the kitchen and rear entrance. There are two offices located on the first floor, one with a fireplace. On the lower level, an exercise room is complete with equipment, a full bath, and dry and wet steam rooms. The owners love to collect art and showcase their modern to sophisticated style with a dash of “Southern Charm” that makes the house a home. “There’s something fresh and innovative about the California style,” the owners say. For a modern edge that breaks up the vintage pieces in the room, opt for hyper-realistic paintings or large-scale photography.” Depending on the subject, art pieces can add humor or drama, and no matter the scene, it’s essential to go large, say the owners. They outfit their prints with a simple black or white box frame to create a contemporary, formal take that balances the “nostalgic feel and more casual aspects of this aesthetic.”

ome of the couple’s favorite prints include “Bibilis” by William Adolphe Bouguereau in the dining room, which includes pine greens, soft tans and creamy whites to create a “tranquil and simple experience.” In the main sitting area at the entrance overlooking the fireplace, the owners have “Douleur d’amour,” also by Bouguereau. or cozy nights, the couple has furry throws and sheepskin rugs that give off a “cozy, warm vibe in the evening,” but they say, the bright white colors on the walls “keep things airy in the daylight.” Some of the owners’ favorite furniture pieces include the Versace Selection in the front entry sitting area; the Top Grain Leather Sofa set is fit for the luxurious space. Also to be remembered is the custom-made double king-size master bed that had to be sawed in half to be placed in the space. The couple and friends also enjoy movie nights in the 20-foot-by-20-foot beds in the theater and the pool table in the billiards room. Frequent guests of the home include local rapper Jack Harlow, who filmed his video for “WARSAW” at the Prospect mansion. The video, which came out on November 6, 2019, according to Billboard, shows his crew and a squad of beautiful women poolside. Billboard also erringly called the mansion “Jack’s,” although the owners say the 21-year-old is always at their exclusive parties. The home will also be featured on a future episode of “Say Yes to the Dress.” The Lady of the House will be in an upcoming episode as she tries on her wedding gown before her big day.

hef/Owner Dallas McGarity is originally from rural South Carolina and graduated culinary school at Johnston & Wales University in Charleston, SC, where he worked for many years before moving to Louisville in 2004. By the time he opened The Fat Lamb with his wife Laura in November 2016, Chef McGarity had already developed a sterling reputation through his innovative yet approachable cuisine, as expressed in restaurants such as Volaré, Equus, Z‘s Fusion, and Marketplace. In 2018, the McGaritys bought and reopened Portage House on the river in Jeffersonville, Indiana. Both restaurants exemplify their standards of “exceptional cuisine and fantastic service with unique atmospheres.”

No one, but no one, fries chicken quite like Dallas McGarity does. Fried chicken usually has a place on the menu in some form or fashion. If you have never tasted his, in any of its many incarnations, give it a try. The crust is crispy but lighter than air and magically adheres to the delicious chicken skin around an always succulent, juicy bird. You’ll be spoiled for fried chicken forever. Chef McGarity’s cuisine takes its original inspiration from the country cooking of his mom and mamaw, and is described as “upscale comfort food with an emphasis on locally sourced ingredients.” The chef is a Slow Food Bluegrass member and supporter. For Starters, he recommends Gochujang Hoisin Cauliflower roasted and topped with toasted peanuts and chives. Lamb Meatballs come with tzatziki, peperonata, and feta cheese, and Pickled Beet & Wild Arugula Salad is dressed with champagne vinaigrette, cherries & pistachios, and goat cheese. Entrées include Herbed Lamb Chops with spinach, caramelized onion, & kalamata olive couscous, feta, tzatziki, and sumac. The Frondosa Farms Mushroom & Braised Short Rib Risotto has caramelized onion, baby spinach, and Parmigiano. Tandoori Seared Mahi is served with a red pepper sauce, spinach, caramelized onion & kalamata olive couscous, and toasted pine nuts. Operations and service updates and house rules for dine-in reservations are available at fatlamblouisville.com. At press time, Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear has mandated that Kentucky restaurants operate at no more than 25% in-person dining capacity until August 11. ocated in Old Louisville’s Mayflower Building and a stop on the Urban Bourbon Trail , Buck’s Restaurant and Bar opened in April 1992. Buck’s quickly developed a reputation as Louisville’s most romantic restaurant and the place to celebrate birthdays and anniversaries. Original owner Hensel “Buck” Heath took decor inspiration from moon gardens, composed of all white flowers that glow with the reflection of the moonlight. To this day, every woman dining at Buck’s receives a Star-of-Bethlehem flower upon leaving. It lasts about three weeks in water, and Buck always said that’s when it’s time to return for another.
prom-goers were having dinner at Buck’s one night when Lisa noticed them all staring into cell phones. She approached the table and suggested they live in the moment enjoying each other’s company. They agreed and certainly had a more memorable evening. The continental cuisine is as topnotch as the live piano music and warm customer service. Executive Chef Allen Sims walked us through some menu highlights. Crispy Fish is finished with sautéed peppers and red onions in a hot-sweet Thai chili sauce and served over jasmine rice. The Kentucky Lawyer is panseared lobster and julienned jowl bacon in Angel’s Envy bourbon cream sauce over mashed potatoes and asparagus. Fancy a steak? Try the popular Filet Mignon or indulge in the surf-and-turf feast that is the Master NY Strip. Saveur Magazine has named Buck’s Mocha Dacquoise the Hidden Gem of Louisville.
General Manager Lisa Imrie is a native Louisvillian whose sister and brother-in-law, Susie and Curtis Rader, bought Buck’s in 1999. Lisa makes you feel like family from the moment you meet. She recommends allowing at least two hours for the dining experience. “We like to call it old-school dining, the way it used to be - no TV and no Wi-Fi.” Some high school

agner’s World Famous Diner, aka Wagner’s Pharmacy, originates with Hagen’s Pharmacy delivery boy Leo Wagner. Leo eventually purchased Hagen’s in 1922 with money borrowed from a great aunt. Old-timers at Wagner’s still refer to third-generation Owner Lee Wagner as “Little Lee” from childhood days spent with his father and grandfather. “It’s in the blood,” says Lee, “Just like Dad, I’m guilty of spreading Derby fever.” The grill and restaurant were added to the Pharmacy’s soda fountain in the mid-1960s, allowing more room for Churchill Downs trainers, owners, and jockeys to congregate.

Wagner’s still operates a general store there with convenience items, racing forms and programs, and officially licensed Churchill Downs and Kentucky Derby souvenirs. Acquired in 1965, Becker & Durski Turf Goods next door produces jockey silks and caps, saddle towels, and Wagner’s Racehorse Liniment. Wagner’s Pharmacy is so ingrained in Derby lore that a scene from the feature film Secretariat was shot on location there. “We’re the Cheers of diners. You make instant friends,” says Lee, “Our staff is like family, and most have been with us 15-plus years.” Hit the trifecta with breakfast at Wagner’s, a visit to the Kentucky Derby Museum, and
an afternoon at Churchill Downs. Wagner’s made Esquire Magazine’s Best Breakfast Places in America list in 2014 and represented Kentucky for Food Network’s 50 States of Diners in 2019. Lee recommends their Honey Glazed Ham & Eggs with biscuits and tomatoes or the Best of Louisville Biscuits & Gravy. For lunch, try the Vegetable Beef Soup & Grilled Cheese, the hot ham Derby Sandwich, or a classic Kentucky Hot Brown - “A Louisville tradition!” Wagner’s has a new outdoor dining area, adding 25-30 additional seats for expanded Derby Week hours. Proceeds from alcohol sales and drink specials, like mimosas for Dawn at the Downs, will benefit the Jockeys’ Guild.

ust over six years ago, an arson fire extensively damaged Old Louisville Tavern. Co-owners Scott Lukemire and Dan Borsch had just purchased and remodeled the Tavern in 2013. Despite the tremendous setback, they rededicated themselves to restoring the former grocery and post office. They salvaged the original beams and set about upgrading the 1933 building for a second time. Scott Lukemire is originally from Cincinnati, where he spent some time with family at the neighborhood bar. He worked his way up from bartender to management in Columbus, Ohio. Management jobs led Scott to Louisville, where he got his chance to open a tavern and form the Rivalry Restaurant Group with Michigan fan Dan. Along with the building’s renovation, Old Louisville Tavern’s food, bar program, and customer service are all about attention to detail, according to Scott. “We make all of our sauces from scratch, and we make the salad dressings in-house. We don’t compromise with cheaper ingredients. We will spend whatever it takes to get that perfect bite on the plate. Our staff treats all customers as though they are entering an upscale restaurant.” They enjoy a high level of service in a comfortable atmosphere.
136 TOPS LOUISVILLE | August 2020
The customer service philosophy may very well have inspired The Fancy Pants Burger, “seasoned with white truffle oil and topped with herbed goat cheese and wild mushrooms served over caramelized onions, arugula, and dijonaise.” Another option is their classic Knocker Burger, served in-house since 1933. The hand-cut fries are a perfect accompaniment to the burgers and The Old Louisville Dip: “rosemary roast beef on a hoagie with caramelized onion, provolone cheese and au jus for dipping.” The Railroad Smoker Mac’n’Cheese is a meal in itself. Old Louisville Tavern’s spacious patio allows for enjoying summer evenings with safe food and drinks at safe table distances.

Jasmin. “We serve the food the way we would eat it at home. Everything is made in-house by hand with fresh ingredients.” As Owner/ Operators, Jasmin and Arnulfo can be found hands-on in the kitchen. She was chopping onions as part of the day’s prep work while she talked about the restaurant and its menu. Before owning El Molcajete, Jasmin had worked in interior design, and Arnulfo sold irrigation systems. Now they are happy to be featured on The Zimmern List, one of celebrity chef Andrew Zimmern’s Travel Channel shows. The dish that turns heads at El Molcajete is Molcajeteada, served in a mortar-and-pestle and piled high with skirt steak, chicken breast, Mexican sausage, cactus, cheese, grilled onions, and jalapeños. Customer-favorite Alambre has skirt steak, bacon, grilled onions, tomatoes, green peppers, and cheese. Many of the equine workers from Churchill Downs Backside prefer the traditional Mexican Menudo and Lengua en Salsa Verde, beef tongue in a green chili sauce. Jasmin also recommends the street tacos, gorditas, and burritos. For specials and updates, visit facebook.com/elmolcajetelouisville/.

Feel Like New Again A true hair extension expert with a passion for helping her clients look their best, Danielle Cole has a reputation to match her expertise. "Danielle's extensions have changed my life," says Julie Lee. "They make me feel beautiful. I have always had very fine hair. I was so worried about it all the time, and it made me feel insecure. Now I don't worry, I look forward to styling it and it always looks great. My extensions have helped me to feel better about myself. I love lov them." Haley, another of Danielle's clients, says, "For me always having thin hair, I have a different confidence with extensions. As a little girl, I was so jealous of all the girls with beautiful hair. I know that hair doesn't make a person, but as a woman that can't get the results I want, I feel better about myself!" Danielle has spent over a decade in haircare, first beginning to make it her trade as a part-time job while also working as a dental assistant. It wasn't long before she was in such demand that it became a full-time occupation. Today, she's so accomplished that she teaches her art around the country via Perfectress.us and creates amazingly natural looks for her clients as part of Sola Salon Studios in Middletown. Her private studio is called Blonde Martini. "I have multiple services for all people, men and women," she says, "but if I have specialties it would be extensions and blonde hair." Danielle's extensions are custom and personalized to each unique individual. It's a high end experience with multiple different systems to choose from. The system she uses most is called Transformation Connections and these are a strand by strand method that has hair on hair contact so there is no metal, glue, or adhesive upon installation. Once in, these extensions stay in and only require maintenance instead of any do-overs for a safe and reusable method. Have unruly hair? Not a problem. Danielle’s extensions me also come in multiple colors and textures to fit any hair preference, designed to enhance clients hair with added volume, length, color and texture. Many people first come to Danielle for a special occasion but then find that extensions become an everyday part of their lives, even on vacation. "Extensions can just help you feel like a better version of yourself," Danielle says.

ouisvillans come dressed to impress and to show off their southern charm during thisextravagant event; however, with the world just a little different these days, your Derby experience may be the opposite of what you have done in the past. Whether you are attending the Millionaire’s Row or attending a backyard BBQ, you will always want to look and feel your best for the Derby. So what does it take to look your Derby best? Ideally, maintaining a healthy daily lifestyle will keep you confident and feeling energized at the same time. Take on this challenge! Change one unhealthy eating habit. Challenge yourself for 1 month and stick to it. For example, substitute a healthy piece of fruit in place of a salty midnight snack. After a month, your body is more apt to make healthier choices in the future. Along with healthy eating habits, incorporate movement!
Let’s get Derby fit by incorporating these exercises into your daily routine. Remember to always warm up your body before beginning an exercise routine. An example of a warm up is riding a stationary bike for 5 to 10 minutes. 1. Knee up to reverse lunge - Front leg bent in lunge position, the other leg behind and bent slightly. Lift your back leg up and bend your knee up to your chest. Hold your knee up for 5 seconds and then extend back into lunge position. Do 10 reps on each leg. This engages your core along with a great leg workout. 2. Push ups - Push ups can be done on your knees or against a wall for a beginner workout. For a more challenging workout, do them on your feet. Start with 10 reps and work yourself up to 20. 3. Plank - This can be performed on hands or elbows. Feet on the floor. This is a great isometric core strength exercise that maintains a similar position to a push up. Start with 30 seconds and build up to a 1 minute plank. Always cool down and stretch after a workout, inhaling and exhaling each breath slowly, holding your stretches for 30 seconds. Incorporating exercise and healthy choices will get you fit mentally and physically. Your body will be Derby ready!

ocated on a farm in eastern Jefferson County, Kim Wheatley established Upside as a nonprofit organization in 2008. A pediatric physical therapist, her career was inspired by her daughter, Alexandra, who was born 30 years ago with Down syndrome and multiple heart defects. “She and I spent the first 18 months of her life on and off at Kosair. She was very sick,” Wheatley said. A few short years later, her sister-in-law, who was a hunter jumper, invited them to her farm. “We put my daughter on this pony, and she began to vocalize and wave to people and it was like a light switch,” Wheatley said. “She became another person when she was on this pony.” In physical therapy school, Wheatley learned about hippotherapy (from the Greek word hippos, meaning horse) and knew she had found her calling, to be able to have a positive impact on other special-needs kids and help them as much as her own daughter had been helped through equine-assisted therapy. Funded by grants, Upside Therapeutic Riding purchases young horses from all over the United States and trains them for specific therapies. Each horse has to
have an even, symmetrical gait, for one thing. “You can't put a child with a disorganized central nervous system on a horse that will be even more disorganizing to the child,” Wheatley said. “I’m pretty adamant about that.” The hippotherapy horses at Upside stand no taller than 13.2 hands and they aren’t shod. The equine handlers and therapists don't use a bridle and bit, but work off a rope halter, verbal commands and body cues using natural horsemanship techniques (yes, like horse whisperers). “We don't teach grooming or horsemanship skills,” she said. “We're not teaching anybody how to ride our horses. We are using the movement of the horse to facilitate a functional outcome.” Hippotherapy helps children improve physically and emotionally. Physical therapists, occupational therapists and speech therapists can be licensed in hippotherapy. “We can’t see anybody over 90 pounds,” Wheatley said of the mounted therapy program, so that means the children are typically ages 3 to 12. There’s no indoor arena so the terrain of the farm and fresh air of the great outdoors are the only setting and environment for each individual therapy session.
“Horses can have such an incredible impact on many populations,” Wheatley said. In addition to working with children, Upside offers Veterans Reins of Recovery, an equine-assisted psychotherapy program for military veterans with PTSD. Wheatley and her staff have collaborated with Robley Rex VA Medical Center since 2015 to develop this 8-week program for veterans, with each week’s specific curriculum building on the last. Upside was the first in this area to offer equine-assisted therapy to veterans. “Our certified equine specialists really understand the psychology and nature of the horse; otherwise it's pointless,” Wheatley said. Her certified equine specialists must have a minimum of 6,000 hours of equine experience and certification through the Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association. “Some certification programs don't require any equine experience at all, which is terrifying to me,” she said. At Upside Therapeutic Riding, non-mounted programming is successful with adults and children. They are not sitting on top of a horse but are in close proximity. “We are going to be moving toward more non-mounted equine-assisted therapy services,” she said. And just why are horses such great therapy animals? They have survived for millennia as prey animals and are acutely in tune with their surroundings. “They live in the moment. They don't judge,” Wheatley said.

arol Jean Sutton was born the only child of Marie and Dallas Sutton on June 29, 1933, in St. Louis, Missouri. Dallas was a conductor for the Missouri Pacific Railroad. Marie ran an unemployment agency and was a strong female influence as a single working mother after their divorce. Carol put out her first newspaper in elementary school and was editor of her high school newspaper. She graduated in 1955 with a journalism degree from the University of Missouri, where she had made a study of US newspapers. The Courier-Journal in Louisville appealed most to Carol for its quality and editorial viewpoint. Carol was possessed of a wandering spirit and interested in living elsewhere after college graduation. She wrote a letter to Courier-Journal publisher Barry Bingham, Sr. seeking employment as a newspaper reporter. He replied there were no available positions, but Carol’s resumé was forwarded to the Executive Editor in need of a secretary. Her journalism school dean convinced Carol to seize the opportunity. In less than a year, she was promoted to the city desk in Louisville. As a city desk reporter and part of a work exchange program, Carol was sent overseas to cover the mayor of Louisville and governor of Kentucky on their travels. It was around this time that Carol met Courier-Journal education reporter Charles Whaley. Charles had been studying abroad as a Marshall scholar at the University of Manchester. Mutual friends played matchmaker while he was away; and Charles and Carol hit it off when they finally met in 1956. Mr. Whaley is now 92 and still lives in the Cherokee Parkway home he shared with Carol and their two daughters, Carrie and Kate. He recalls his impression of Carol when they first met, “She was warm, often smiling and laughing, very
