As quoted by Helen Hunt Jackson, “By all these lovely tokens September days are here, with summer’s best of weather, and autumn’s best of cheer.” Warm sunny days with minimal humidity. Crisp, cool nights that beg for an outdoor firepit surrounded by friends and family. And libations. If you live in Kentucky, those libations usually call for anything bourbon. of Good Manners

IFyou feel like good manners have gone the way of the dodo, you’re not wrong; in today’s increasingly connected world, doing what’s polite often takes a back seat to what’s most expedient. The rules for what’s okay feel lax, but that doesn’t mean we have to abandon all social graces in favor of a quick text!

33September 2022 | TOPSinLex.com

But one thing you shouldn’t do is “B-list” their event; if you’re not sure whether you will still want to attend when the time nears, don’t simply wait past the deadline to RSVP. Send your regrets right away and make other plans. Again, this is less important for events where the headcount doesn’t really matter, but it’s still good practice. zoom, zoom Virtual meetings are – as far as we can tell – a permanent part of whatever “the new normal” is. While it’s easy to treat Zoom meetings and appointments as more informal than their in-person counterparts, it’s important to treat the time with the respect it deserves. Be prepared for the meeting a little early to iron out any technical difficulties before it starts. Participate in active listening and give the speaker your full attention. Dress professionally – head to toe! – and ensure that your surroundings are as quiet and tidy as possible. Don’t attempt to multitask.

thank you card

rsvp Whenever you have been asked to RSVP, please do so if you plan to attend. If you end up being unable to go, a text or email stating your regrets is a good practice. (This isn’t necessary for networking or mingling events where attendees tend to come and go and the guest list isn’t a tight number.)

If you’re wondering whether you should send a thank you card, the answer is yes. There’s nothing wrong with sending someone an immediate text to express your gratitude – and if someone sends you flowers, for instance, snapping and sending a pic right away will be much appreciated. Still follow up with a handwritten note in a thank you card. Whether you’re thanking them for a gift, dinner, a place to stay on vacation, a job interview or a favor, a card will make an impression with the giver.

September 2022 phone down

If this is hard for you, mindfully set aside one lunch hour a week–say, Tuesdays–for spur-of-the-moment lunches, coffees or walks. If someone throws out a vague offer to get together, you’ll be able to respond with, “How about next Tuesday?”

We know that we live in a world of 24/7/365 communication. Family, friends, coworkers and intrepid spammers are continually trying to reach us. Putting your phone down for even an hour during the day can feel like being disconnected from the entire world! We’re here to lovingly suggest that, actually, that’s a good thing. Put your phone on silent and put it away in any situation where you should be experiencing the moment; at dinner, during a movie, when your friend is telling you about their latest escapade, during meetings, at weddings… the list goes on and on. Be present in the moment. This is not only polite but will subtly improve your mood in ways you won’t even expect. do lunch “Let’s get together and have lunch sometime.” It’s easy to agree in the moment but hard to firm up actual plans. Do lunch! Get drinks! Have coffee! Get together with friends, family and acquaintances that you’re seemingly always putting off.

While we’re not suggesting you have to fill every Tuesday lunch, you’ll be surprised how much you enjoy these little outings. be kind

While there are dozens of little social rules we could list here, the easiest, simplest guideline for you to follow seems to be this: be kind. In any situation, if you choose kindness, your manners will be beyond reproach. While this doesn’t cover passing the rolls in the wrong direction, in most situations, being mindful, respectful and friendly with others will be more than enough.

Networks nationwide covered the events of July 28 when Eastern Kentucky experienced flooding of historic proportions leaving much of the area devasted. We watched as hundreds of homes, several schools, and numerous businesses were completely destroyed. At the time of this writing, 455 people were still being housed in contingency congregate shelters or Kentucky state parks. More tragically, 39 lives had been lost.

“The devastation we are seeing on the ground is huge in scale and depth, and it’s also been a long time coming.

to Lora Smith, the Chief Strategy Officer at the Foundation for Appalachian Kentucky, “Recovery is going to take years and it’s hard in this moment to articulate what ‘recovery’ means for a region marked by under investment, environmental degradation, social and economic inequity, and generational poverty. Our hope is that we do not ‘recover’ to return to the type of normal that led to this deadly flooding and tens of thousands of low-income families being displaced, but rather use this opportunity to reimagine and create an Eastern Kentucky that better serves all people.”

In the immediate aftermath of a disaster, with every news channel showing constant footage, we naturally feel compelled to donate, to volunteer, to help. Now, weeks later, though the news coverage has waned, the need has Accordingnot.

When asked how fellow Kentuckians can help, Smith said, “Volunteers and cash donations are our two largest needs at the moment. If you can donate, please give to local organizations based inside the region. Your dollars go the furthest that way.”

The residents of Eastern Kentucky will never forget the flood of 2022 and neither should we. As we return to business as usual, we must remember the numerous individuals who are living each day in a new normal rife with challenges and uncertainty.

If you would like to donate your time, talents, and energy as well as money, there are still volunteer opportunities available. “We also need more people in Eastern Kentucky helping to muck out houses and feed folks. There are many ways to volunteer in various counties by partnering with local nonprofits and mutual aid networks with boots on the ground. My suggestions are to connect with the Housing Development Alliance, HOMES Inc., CANE Kitchen, and Feeding East Kentucky to help,” said Smith.

The flood was not a one off natural disaster, but signals the type of flooding and severe weather events we will now be experiencing on the regular,” Smith said. “We have entered into a new phase of living in the region that must directly confront and work in seriousness to mitigate the devastating and inequitable economic, environmental, and human legacy extractive industries have created for Appalachian people to endure while driving the creation of wealth in other parts of the state like Central Kentucky.”

Our hope is that we do not ‘recover’ to return to the type of normal that led to this deadly ooding and tens of thousands of low-income families being displaced, but rather use this opportunity to reimagine and create an Eastern Kentucky that better serves all people. - Lora Smith “ “ September 2022 | TOPSinLex.com 39

Hats Hats are making a comeback in a big way. But most people still agree that hats should be removed when indoors. If you want to avoid the dreaded “hat head” when you take doff your chapeau, bring along a hair clip or comb.

It’s almost universally agreed that pantyhose are no longer required attire. Some business formal or service industry workplaces still cling to this outdated rule, but most have given up the ghost on this one. If you’re visiting an office that requires hose, don’t feel obligated to put them on unless there’s a pressing cultural sensitivity issue. And if you prefer wearing hose, you’re always welcome to do so – in any environment!

This is such a contentious issue, and one we’re happy to settle. Pool sides, flip flops and sports sandals should be left in the closet, even if you were planning to (heaven help you) wear them with socks. Dressy sandals and peep-toe pumps are just fine for women.

In many modern offices, tidy jeans with clean lines (and no holes) are considered perfectly appropriate, especially on days when there are no important client meetings. While this may have some of the old guard clutching their pearls, it’s actually a key strategic move. Not only does allowing jeans make employees feel more comfortable–physically, obviously, but also socially with one another–it can convey to clients a relaxed, welcoming environment.

The hard-and-fast rule has long been that knee-length (or longer) is appropriate for skirts and shorts in the office. But we’re comfortable saying that in all but the most formal business environments, four inches above the knee is probably not going to raise any eyebrows.

Dressing for the modern office has become a bit of a question mark. What used to be hard and clear rules have loosened over the years, blurring the lines of what “office attire” really means. While there are some rules we’re not sad to see go, there are some that remain up for debate. While you should obviously follow your workplace’s policy, officers with looser policies can look to these guidelines for help decoding the dress code.

Athleisure With the rise of WFH, athleisure crept into standard casual workwear. And designers responded by making athleisure pieces that cleverly bridge the gap between the streets and the office! So while we’d be remiss to write this category off entirely, this is a case where it’s best to tread lightly. We recommend only using one athleisure piece, then compensating with more dressy, structured pieces elsewhere in the outfit. For example, try a pair of (thick, preferably black or brown) leggings beneath an oversized button-up. A casual athleisure top with slacks and a sharp blazer can be quite casual-chic. In very casual offices, dressy sneakers are welcome with a pretty dress or well-tailored outfit. That said, as a rule of thumb, hoodies, jogging pants and supertight workout gear are best left in your gym bag. Pajamas Unless you work in mattress quality control testing, the answer is a resounding “no…” even if you’re on a Zoom call. C rdiff nt

Showing Skin

Most office dress codes hold that employees should avoid showing as much of their skin as possible for the comfort of clients as well as other employees. We agree with the sentiment of it, but feel that there’s lots of room for nuance. We think sleeveless tops and dresses are fine for women–after all, what’s more classically office chic than a shift dress–but inappropriate for men. For everyone, a good guide for necklines is to hold your hand crosswise at the base of your throat; exposing more than that is iffy territory. Outfits that reveal bellies, backs or peeks that skin that a traditional one-piece bathing suit wouldn’t cover should be left at home.

If you're worried about dressing yourself to visit another office for a meeting or interview, look to their social media to get clues on the office's style culture. If that doesn't turn up anything, aim for formal and subdued with one accessory that shows off your personality. Remember, you can't go wrong with the classics!

The old adage used to be, "Dress for the job you want, not the job you have." Well, if we all did that, we'd show up to meetings dressed as either Batman or Mark ZuckInerberg.today's world, the best advice is to look to the sharpest dresser in your office for cues on how to style yourself. From there, consider what impression you want to give the people with whom you interact. If you want to appear trustworthy, professional and knowledgeable, you want to dress as traditionally "professional" as possible for your industry. On the other hand, if you want to seem approachable, down-to-earth and honest, a more relaxed look may be in line. For creative industries, looking unique and on-trend is the order of the day.

The Last Word

It's important to remember that there is generally a lot of leeway in office dress codes. If your staff seems confused by the messaging, take the initiative to lead by style example. Each person in an office has a hand in setting the culture, so show 'em what you think the dress code should be!

Well, good news! Once again, you will find Ron behind the pulpit on Sunday mornings at Immanuel Baptist Church. Ron is back in Lexington as the Lead Pastor of Immanuel. In 2018, Ron moved to Dallas, Texas, to lead a well known international church leadership organization. He eventually made his way to Nashville, Tennessee, where he consulted with churches around the country. In the spring of this year, Immanuel asked Ron to return as Lead Pastor for a second time. While neither the church nor Ron and Cheryl ever thought they would return, no doubt God had other plans. And the community will be the benefactor. Ron and Cheryl plan to be even more involved in the community this time. Both plan to serve on local boards, volunteer in community activities, and embrace everything the Bluegrass State has to offer.

Immanuel is one church with three locations, with two campuses in Lexington and one in Georgetown. Ron led the launch of the second Lexington campus before leaving in 2018. The Georgetown campus opened earlier this year. Ron’s goal is to add additional campuses in Central Kentucky over the next few years. For over 60 years, Immanuel has been broadcast on WLEX-TV18 to thousands each week throughout Central Kentucky. There are potential campuses wherever a base of viewers has been established.

You might find Ron Edmondson on weekdays at a local coffee shop. You may find him and his wife Cheryl walking the trails at the Arboretum, on UK’s campus, or downtown on Fridays and Saturdays. You could find them at a UK sporting event or a Lexington Legends ballgame, or volunteering at the visitor’s center. Ron and Cheryl are all about Lexington and the surrounding area. In six years (from 2012 to 2018), the Edmondson family endeared themselves to the local Roncommunity.always says, “To be a Kingdom-minded pastor one has to be community-minded.”

Immanuel is an intergenerational and diverse community of believers. Ron’s challenge to the church has always been to love our community with the love of Christ. If you are looking for a church that will have an impact on this community, now is a great time to join us. You’ll find your place at Immanuel.

From ostrich to kangaroo leather, there are tons of options out there. Each comes with its own set of pros and cons.

Knit or Stocking Knit boots offer more stretch, much like a sock. The downside is that much like a sock, these can take on water very easily.

Exotic Animal Leathers

Patent Leather This leather has been coated for a high-gloss finish. It looks great, but can show wear and tear quickly.

Lambskin This leather is buttery soft. Unfortunately, that means it’s also more prone to scratches, stains and cracking. This leather tends to show up on highend purses and boots.

Perhaps even more important than the style of boot, the material you select can make the difference between style joy and buyer's remorse. What may look like an easy, breezy boot might become a soggy mess in the autumn rain. An interesting textured material may feel nice, but how will it stand up to dirt, grime and fuzzies? We'll help you narrow down your choices with a quick guide so you walk into the shoe store well-informed!

Synthetic leathers come in a variety of constructions, often featuring polyurethane. They tend to be less expensive than leather and fairly durable with a more impressive array of colors and textures. Inexpensive faux leather can sometimes peel and scratch at the toes and heels.

When you think “leather boots,” this is what you’re thinking of. These have a nice feel and are very durable. They do require a lot of care and aren’t very breathable. These tend to have a limited range of color and texture options.

Faux or Vegan Leather

Faux Suede These tend to be made from similar materials to faux leather. They are sometimes more waterproof than real suede, but often just as likely to get dirty.

Suede This soft, velvety material is more breathable than its leather cousins. That said, they tend to be magnets for dirt and grime. They also get wet and soggy easily.

If you're looking to peel back your lived-in skin to reveal a rejuvenated, fresh complexion, a chemical peel could be your answer. A chemical peel is a type of exfoliation where a chemical solution is applied to the skin and removed once the solution has penetrated the layers of the skin. Most often, they're applied to the face, but some treatments can be used on the arms, legs, neck, shoulders or scars anywhere on the body. These treatments can provide a number of skin-loving benefits, such as preventing acne, diminishing fine lines and wrinkles, and revealing glowing skin. We've peeled back the layers so you can learn more about the basics of chemical peels! by Allyson Mattingly

SKINap-PEEL

While AHA peels exfoliate the skin, Beta Hydroxy acid peels (BHA) can penetrate deeper layers of the skin by attaching to the skin's natural oils. The most popular acid in BHA peels is salicylic acid, which has anti-inflammatory properties that can reduce acne-induced irritation. BHA peels are a great option for those wanting to reduce the appearance of blemishes, as salicylic acid acts as a powerful clear-out for pores.

Medium peels penetrate down to the middle layer of skin and help with moderate skin problems such as scarring, fine lines, wrinkles, age spots, and discoloration.

Superficial peels are often described as "lunchtime peels," as they involve little to no downtime and are suited for mild skin problems. These peels minimally penetrate your skin but provide gentle exfoliation. Often, these chemical peels are available in at-home treatments, but it's best to consult your skin care professional for guidance before starting a new regimen. Most often, you will be advised to use a daily SPF to protect your skin after using the product (which you should be doing anyway!)

Trichloroacetic Acid Peel

Glycolic acid increases collagen production, brightens skin tone, reduces wrinkles, and is especially effective for acne Whenscars.searching for an at-home glycolic acid peel, look for a formula with a glycolic acid strength of 8-15%. The risk of negative side effects increases with the strength of the formulation, so it's best to trust a professional with more intense peels.

Glycolic Acid Peels

Salicylic Acid Peels

Definitely consult with your skin care professional before starting an at-home medium-depth peel. Avoiding direct sun exposure is recommended until the entire treated area has regenerated.

Trichloroacetic acid peels, or TCA peels, penetrate deeper than glycolic or salicylic acid peels, making them an excellent option for people with sun damage, pigmentation issues, or deep wrinkles. TCA can be used alongside salicylic acid, but since it is offered in a variety of strengths, make sure the formulation percentage is low within your chosen solution. For reference, 10-30% TCA provides a superficial peel, 30-40% TCA provides a medium-depth peel, and 50% and above provides a deep chemical peel that must be administered by a professional. Deep peels are designed to penetrate deep into the layers of the skin to offer long-lasting, dramatic facial restoration. These peels target damaged skin cells, severe scarring, deep wrinkles, and discoloration. While superficial peels can be done at home and medium-depth can be performed at home with caution, deeper peels should always be administered by a skin care expert.

Glycolic acid is an Alpha Hydroxy acid (AHA), a category that contains others like citric acid, lactic acid, and tartaric acid. Glycolic acid, derived from sugar cane, maintains a structure that allows it to penetrate the layers of the skin.

Phenol Peel

Phenol peels are the deepest type of chemical peel, with carbonic acid as their peeling agent. The concentration of carbonic acid can be combined with salicylic acid to produce dramatic results and can be so intense that some concentrations of a phenol peel can only be administered once in a lifetime. A phenol peel is an effective remedy for intense sun damage, deep scars, significantly aged skin, and even precancerous growths.

If you've tried just about everything to get your glowing, youthful skin back, but nothing seems to work, it may be time to try one of these chemical skin care treatments. Peel back the layers today by scheduling a consultation with your skincare professional!

HIRECESSION?AABBY:Ikeephearingtalk about the U.S. either being in a recession already or headed for one soon. With inflation pressures and the stock market, I can’t help but wonder - Are we in a recession? If so, what should I do?

—RECESSION REBECCA HI REBECCA: This is a great question that many people are wondering. It’s no secret that markets have been volatile during these uncertain times. Just the past few months have seen some wild swings! Stocks rallied in May on hopes inflation peaked. But optimism was squashed when the Fed handed out its first 0.75% rate hike in 28 years as inflation remains stubbornly high. Shelter, household furnishings, and medical expenses are among the slowest moving and stickiest components of inflation and they’re rising at their fastest pace in 30 years.

While this environment is not an easy one to digest, try focusing on identifying companies that have the ability to raise prices, maintain sustainable competitive advantages and carry strong balance sheets to offset inflation and higher interest costs.

119September 2022 | TOPSinLex.com Ask Abby Vaughn ARE WE IN

To answer your first question, the likelihood of a recession has certainly increased in recent months. If true, heightened volatility is also likely as the Fed continues with interest rate hikes to slow growth and bring prices down. Rate hikes will ultimately strip demand out of the marketplace bringing inflation pressures under control. Markets, and likely economic growth, have to get worse before it gets better. The Fed is banking on low unemployment, a resilient consumer, and wage growth to provide enough of a backbone for the economy to withstand this. Whether they are correct is obviously yet to be seen. Consumers are beginning to dip into their savings and use credit to support their spending patterns. These are potential signs that the consumer is strained more than what is being led on. Now, the bigger question. What should you do?

Quality is the stabilizer that will be able to better withstand periods of heightened volatility. While market volatility is unnerving, it is historically not unusual, and a well-diversified portfolio that matches your time horizon and risk tolerance has been and will likely continue to provide the best Reachoutcomes.out to us to discuss how American Trust can help you through a potential recession.—ABBY V. the DESK set Tips for bringing your personality to your workspace! Crate & Barrel 120 TOPS in Lexington | September 2022

One-third of your life. That’s how much it’s been estimated that the average person will spend working. You’ll spend just as much time sleeping. But we’d bet that your work desk isn’t nearly as comfortable or inviting as your bed. (Okay, maybe not a fair comparison.)

The point is, even though our workspaces are where we spend a huge portion of our time, they rarely feel like they’re truly our spaces. Often, that’s due to the fact that office policies prevent us from bringing our personalities to our desks. But that’s a mistake. According to the Harvard Business Review, their studies found that employees who can personalize their areas feel a greater sense of belonging, enthusiasm and engagement with their work.

Desk Pad

WorldChairishPerigoldMarket September 2022 | TOPSinLex.com 121

The easiest way to transform the overall feel of your desk is a desk pad. If you’re unfamiliar, this is a large rectangle of leather, felt or vinyl that you place under the portion of your desk you use most. Not only does it protect the surface from wear and tear, it offers a soft spot with lots of grip for writing, typing or sorting papers. Because they’re so large, choosing a style that reflects your personality can quickly change the entire vibe of your office. A classic brown leather desk pad will obviously feel different than a fun vinyl one, emblazoned with sunflowers.

Another reason people might hold back from putting their innermost selves on display at work is a misplaced concept of “professionalism;” the idea of separating your work self from who you are when you clock out. While it’s absolutely important to keep many aspects of your private life out of the office, showing a little personality has been shown to make others perceive you as more approachable and more of a team player. Where you work is obviously a part of the equation. A home office will be 100% under your control, whereas an openconcept office may have tons of rules about what you can and can’t personalize. As always, refer to the rule book before you make any decisions. That said, we’re encouraging you to make your workspace your own! Add little flourishes to your desk that will help coworkers, clients and supervisors get a sense of who you are – and make you feel more connected to the work you’re doing. And that’s just good business!

For managers, consider this; according to a study by the Harvard Business Review, photographs of an employee’s loved one actually make them less likely to engage in unethical behavior. The presence of even a single photo of a family member or partner can help cut costs like expense report padding or inventory theft.

frustrations of a good desk set is that it can be difficult to find all of the pieces you need in the same material or style. If you’re dead set on a blush pink desk set, for instance, we recommend incorporating an accent neutral (in this case, white would be perfect) that’s a little easier to find.

A personalized workspace will make you feel more “at home” in your workplace; you will feel more productive, connected to your work and enthusiastic about your work’s mission. If something in your workspace is making you feel disconnected, distracted or less productive, speak up! Your supervisor might be able to accommodate your need, whether that’s different lighting or more comfortable seating. You deserve it!

Photographs

Personal photographs in the workplace are sometimes viewed negatively. But we think that’s just silly! These photos give coworkers and clients a glimpse into your personal life – thus making you more approachable and trustworthy in their eyes – while helping you find a little calm in your dayto-day work life.

While having a matching set – complete with a pencil cup, business card holder, tape dispenser, folder organizer, stapler and paper tray – isn’t necessary, it’s a classic desk styling trick that makes the whole space feel intentional. It also can bring a lot of personality to the space. A clear acrylic set with sharp lines gives a very different impression than traditional Onerosewood.ofthe

Bring It All Together

Accessories When in doubt, accessorize! Like pulling together an outfit, accessories are where the magic happens. Display your interests, hobbies or personal style through some well-chosen décor items. For instance, if you collect vintage cameras, select one or two to display in your office (I actually have 18 in mine, but I’m a maximalist.) A cool clock, pretty vases, an interesting lamp, small sculptures or potted plants can show a lot about who you are in just a little space.

If you’re sensitive to featuring photos of the people in your life at your workplace, you still have options to bring that sense of comfort to your desk. Consider photos of your pets, a favorite vacation spot or photos of yourself during important life moments.

The Desk Set

If your office isn't client-facing but you have coworkers, be sure to get their permission before unleashing a fragrance on their senses. That's all we ask.

Religion and Big Opinons

Don’t incorporate controversial statements in your workplace décor (or conversation!) unless your work environment clearly supports that choice. Even then, the potential for interpersonal conflict really just doesn’t seem worth it –and could potentially land you in HR, or worse, turn off a potential client.

In this world of memes, it’s almost natural to want to share something you found that makes you laugh. But in the workplace, that’s a minefield. Not everyone will share your sense of humor, and things you might take lightly, others may be offended by. It’s best to tread lightly with the funny business.

DONT'SthePolitics,

Plug-in air fresheners, diffusers, candles and room sprays are lovely. Unfortunately, they can be a menace to people with certain allergies (I’m one; your “air freshener” is my migraine.)

Roman and solar shades are available in a variety of transparencies, colors, and materials, making them great options for a minimalist household. Allow in soft natural light while maintaining your privacy with classic roman shades, adding texture with burlap-looking fabrics or white linen.

Camp g

If you don’t have a camping tent – or you just want to make the experience even more fun – building your own can be really magical. Tarps, canvas drop cloths, sheets or blankets can make a great improvised tent. Dress up your shelter with greenery, string lights and lots of cushions.

Pitching a tent in the backyard, pulling out an old radio and telling ghost stories under the stars… backyard camping is a timeless family tradition. You get to enjoy the novelty of a stay in the great outdoors without schlepping your gear all over creation – and without being miles from indoor plumbing. Whether you’re hanging out with your besties, kiddos or just your partner, here are some ways to make the experience a memorable one.

Don’t forget camp cooking classics like S’mores, popcorn, orange brownies and campfire elotes! by Amanda Harper

You’ll get hungry at some point in the evening, so plan on bringing some snacks. Whether you pack a picnic, roast weenies over the fire or get out the grill for a full-on cookout, sharing a meal outdoors is always a lot of fun.

Good Grub

Go For a Theme

If you really want to take your backyard camping experience to the next level, consider incorporating a theme. Maybe it’s retro camping with throwback games (Twister, anyone?), kitschy decorations and vintage equipment. It could be a summer camp vibe where you make team pennants, weave lanyard keychains and improvise a camp theme song. Or maybe you make the entire event a bougie glamping affair, with lush seating and gourmet snacks!

And don’t worry; we won’t tell if you make it more of a glamping trip than a camping trip. Here’s the Pitch…

Warm Up There can be a little chill in the air at night, even with a fire going. Bring out flannel throws and hoodies for everyone to bundle up with. Warm drinks in thermoses will be a welcome treat; everyone can enjoy hot cocoa or mulled apple cider while the adults sip hot toddies, coffee or chai.

Everyone could get in on the fun with charades, Pictionary or Who Am I? (that game where you write a famous person's name on a card and stick to someone's forehead and they have to try and guess who they are.)

Have Fun!

Backyard games are fun all year long. Washer toss, badminton, giant Jenga, croquet, cornhole, ladder toss, bocce… the options are endless! If you want to take the fun to another level, consider setting up tournaments with carnival prizes.

Game Night

Everyone loves to gather around the campfire and tell stories. While traditionally those are scary stories, there’s nothing wrong with telling silly stories, long jokes or interesting mythologies. We also love playing campfire story games, like Telephone or Round-robin, where everyone goes in a circle and improvises a little bit of the story.

Scavenger Hunt

180 TOPS in Lexington | September 2022

Speaking of games… coordinate a scavenger hunt that will have everyone laughing. Pass out flashlights, a list of items to find and a way to collect them, like a basket or backpack. Need ideas? It could be natural elements, like sticks, leaves or flowers. It could also be fun things you place around your yard beforehand that will be used later in the evening, like campfire marshmallow forks, lanterns, toys or outdoor pillows.

Aaaaand… Action! There’s nothing better than movie night in the backyard. Set up a projector and hang a white sheet or canvas dropcloth to serve as the screen. Remember to be courteous to your neighbors with the volume! Want to make it a no-screens night? Instead of playing a movie, serve as your own entertainment! More dramatic campers could try a little improv or stage a silly play.

Stories to Tell in the Dark

The whole point of camping is to let loose a little and enjoy the outdoors. There may be mishaps and a few bug bites, but you'll be so glad you took this little staycation adventure!

DON'T GET SURPRISED. If you have a sprinkler system or automatic flood lights, turn them off to avoid a nasty surprise at night! PREPARE FOR BUGS! Whether you use sprays, bug zappers or candles, do whatever you can to mitigate mosquitoes, ticks and other nuisances. DON'T OVERPACK! Remember that you're not really camping; don't feel the need to pack for every possible scenario or emergency. You can always just run inside for whatever you're missing. CAN'T BUILD A FIRE? Use a propane camping stove, grill or kitchen torch to toast marshmallows. If you want to simulate a campfire, spread yellow, orange and red tissue paper over white LED string lights. SET THE RULES. Here are a few things to consider when backyard camping in a group: • Will everyone have access to their phones and screens the whole time, or only in certain circumstances? • Will you limit the number of trips •inside?Willyou all be sleeping outside, or just the kiddos? • Who is the “leader” in case of •emergencies?Whatarethe physical boundaries everyone needs to abide by? • What happens if it rains? Crumble and brown ground chuck and sausage in the bottom of a large stock pot over medium-high heat. Drain off fat. Add in other ingredients. Stir to combine. Cover pot and simmer over low heat for 2-3 hours, stirring occasionally. Note: this recipe is intentionally very easy to scale up. Whether you're feeding your family or a whole football stadium, this will be a crowdfavorite for sure! If you want to use a crock pot, we recommend making your chili ahead, refrigerating, then warming it up in your slow cooker. This will give the flavors plenty of time to develop. The browning stage is very important, just won't get if you cook this recipe startto-finish in your crock pot.

With tailgating season upon us and the summer’s bounty flowing in from our gardens, we’re all itching to cook up a pot of chili. While we don’t have any answers for which kind of chili is the best, we’re here to present recipes to help you decide for yourself this fall!

As soon as there's even the smallest hint of a chill in the air, our editorial team immediately starts talking about our favorite soups and stews. While we adore a good loaded potato soup and would never turn down a big ol’ bowl of chicken noodle, the topic almost always veers into chili territory. Which type is the best? Who likes it spicy?

Tasting

While we love sipping wines all year, there's no time quite like late summer as it transitions into autumn. Warm days and chilly nights practically beg you to reach for the corkscrew, to sit down and savor a yummy glass of wine. Here are some of our favorite picks for the season!

Tasting Notes: This wine has a bright deep ruby color, it offers aromas of dark berry, plum, cedar, violet, ginger, vanilla bean and spice. On the palate, offers you a rich full body mouth feel with round firm tannins and flavors of ripe black berries, black cherries, hints of mocha and cloves which complements the refreshing acidity that lingers in the finish. Those delicious notes just scream autumn to us!

F l W e

Tasting Notes: Opulent purple and red hues present this wine. Cassis, black plum and dark raspberry aromas combine with anise and subtle vanilla, evidence of the toasted oak maturation. Juicy blackberry and black currant flavors mingle with dark cocoa, black licorice, espresso and subtle toasted oak. This textured and elegantly structured cabernet sauvignon exhibits a velvety tannin finish. 90+ points. From the vineyard featured on our cover!

Cedar + Salmon 2020 Willamette Valley Pinot Gris

St. Supéry 2018 Napa Valley Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

Notes: Greets the nose with honeysuckle, freshcut grass, and lemon zest aromas. Refreshing on the palate, this medium-bodied wine comes alive with crisp apple peel flavors and soft floral notes. The sustaining finish is balanced with a bright acidity. While normally we'd recommend a pinot gris for summer, we think this bottle pairs well with porch swings and firepits.

Ghost Block Pelissa Vineyard Zinfandel 2020

Cattleya Cuvée Number Five Chardonnay 2017

Tasting Notes: As if a portal to the fog-laden and windswept hillsides of the Sonoma Coast, this powerful Chardonnay transports the senses with classic aromas of pear tart, green apple, Meyer lemon, and an unmistakable salinity. Bold flavors of baked apple, toasted vanilla, and honeysuckle create a richly complex and layered mouthfeel that is harnessed by the vibrant acidity this area is known for. The pear and apple notes – and almost cooling effect of the wine – remind us of days spent at the orchard. |

“He is smart. He is strong. He does a lot of things to make him a natural center. Being mentored by Drake and Luke, guys who have done a great job at the position, really helps. Now Luke wants to carry that tradition on to the next guy. That’s what makes our (offensive line) room special.”

PHOTOS COURTESY

Cox considers it more of a “blessing than curse” that Fortner did so well last year and raised the expectations for what he can do this season. “I like seeing how he made the move and now he’s in the NFL. Luke is a great contact to bounce ideas off of or ask questions,” Cox said. “I also have (former UK center/current graduate assistant coach) Drake (Jackson) in the building. That’s two great guys to have in my support system.”

“He understands the Schlarman legacy and wants to uphold that. He realizes that Schlarman culture is ingrained in players here he coached and recruited. Coach Yenser wants to keep passing that on,” Cox said. “We pass down those standards and young players see how we do it here. Coach Schlarman will always be part of our room and you will always know his name here. No one is ever going to forget coach Schlarman. Coach Yenser has been in the NFL but he knows how to bridge the gap between here and the NFL and still uphold that Schlarman legacy.”

TOPS in Lexington | September 2022196

Cox is not a stranger to playing center. He played center two years at West Jessamine High School and says he “can’t just take off as quick” now because he has to make sure the ball gets to quarterback Will Levis. He credits former UK offensive line coach John Schlarman for always “cross training” players in more than one spot and he actually practiced at center at UK even when he was playing guard. Cox, a midseason ESPN All-American last season, is on the preseason watch list for the 2022 Outland Trophy given to the nation’s best offensive lineman.

Now Eli Cox has to try and do what Fortner did — move from guard to center except he’s also coming off a hand injury that made him miss the last four games in 2021.

New offensive line coach Zach Yenser, Cox’s third coach in the last three seasons, believes Fortner and Cox are similar type players and that Schlarman always envisioned Cox at center when he recruited him even though few other big-time programs did.

“Getting to play center for two years as opposed to Luke just doing it one year is going to be huge for Eli,” Yenser, who came to UK from the San Francisco 49ers, said. “The biggest difference for Eli now is he has to snap the ball and he’ll do that fine. I think he has a chance to be not only a very good center for us but also at the next level.

Cox likes that Yenser, a Kentucky native, fully appreciates the blue collar culture and importance of the Big Blue Wall that coach Mark Stoops and Schlarman, before his death during the 2020 season, put in place.

Moving from guard to center can be a difficult task in the Southeastern Conference but Luke Fortner made it look relatively easy last year and that was a big reason Kentucky was able to win 10 Fortnergames.played so well that he was a third-round draft pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars after going into the 2021 season without his name on any mock draft lists.

KENTUCKY WRITER NAMED THE 24TH U.S. POET LAUREATE BY AMANDA HARPER PHOTOS BY LUCAS MARQUARDT & SHAWN MILLER, LIBRARY OF CONGRESS LimónAda September 2022 | TOPSinLex.com 199

Limón was born in Sonoma, California in 1976. She fell in love with "One Art" by Elizabeth Bishop at 15, and thus with poetry. Limón’s mother is a painter – her mom actually painted every cover of Limón's poetry books so far – and she grew up in a home environment that nurtured her passion for the arts. Limón's career nearly took a very different path artistically. She majored in theatre at the University of Washington and planned to continue with theatre in her graduate studies at NYU. A poetry professor – National Book Award winner Colleen J. McElroy – pulled her aside and suggested she focus on poetry instead. While she moved into marketing upon graduation, she eventually transitioned into the life of a full-time writer. Limón moved to Kentucky a decade ago with her nowhusband, who works in the thoroughbred industry. She fell in love first with the landscape of the Bluegrass, then with the arts scene. "[Kentucky] has a wonderful literary community, and a literary legacy… there are so many great writers that have come from Kentucky, and that live in Kentucky now. And I think it's so important to remember that writing doesn't just happen on, you know, the two coasts," she said in an interview with WKMS. At least two other Kentuckians have served as the US Poet Laureate; Allen Tate (born in Winchester, Ky) and Robert Penn Warren (born in Guthrie, Ky).

When Lexington-based poet Ada Limón was asked to participate in a Zoom call on June 1st, she had no idea what to expect. She was surprised to learn that she was on the line with Carla Hayden, the Librarian of Congress. She was – ironically, perhaps – rendered speechless when she learned that the call was to invite her to serve as the 24th Poet Laureate of the United States.

"Kentucky for me has become such a beautiful home; it's allowed me to have a little more space and time to write," Limón explained. "But it's also really allowed me a very generous writing community that I get to surround myself with and be inspired by all the time."

"Ada Limón is a poet who connects," Hayden said. "Her accessible, engaging poems ground us in where we are and who we share our world with. They speak of intimate truths, of the beauty and heartbreak that is living, in ways that help us move forward."

One way she hopes to achieve that goal is to get people thinking about poetry in public spaces. Nature is a recurring element in her own work (one of her books for Scribd Originals is titled Shelter: A Love Letter to Trees); she would love to have poetry linked to parks, urban green areas or unexpected spaces for free, where anyone can access it –or, perhaps more accurately, encounter and interact with poetry without actively seeking it. She envisions people going for a leisurely walk and experiencing poetry the way they might take in the trees, grass and flowers.

The position has existed since 1937. Many of our nation's most important, gifted and forward-thinking poets have been bestowed this prestigious title of Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress (it wasn't until 1985 that the title became Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry).

“Again and again, I have been witness to poetry's immense power to reconnect us to the world, to allow us to heal, to love, to grieve, to remind us of the full spectrum of human emotion.”

"What an incredible honor to be named the 24th Poet Laureate of the United States,” Limón said in a statement.

To learn more about Ada Limón, visit adalimon.net or follow her on Instagram @adalimonwriter To listen to The Slowdown, visit slowdownshow.org or find it wherever you listen to your podcasts!

Limón also wants to bring awareness to the global legacy of our nation’s literature and poetry. She points out that American poetry comes from many different sources and many different voices – ones often left out of the “literary Onecanon.”ofthose varied voices making up our shared literary legacy is hers. Her six poetry collections have won numerous literary awards. She is the recipient of fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the New York Foundation for the Arts, the Provincetown Fine Arts Work Center and the Kentucky Foundation for Women. She serves on the faculty of Queens University of Charlotte's Low Residency MFA Limónprogram.hasalready been working to make poetry more democratized and accessible through modern media. She currently hosts The Slowdown, a podcast series from American Public Media in partnership with The Poetry Foundation, which was launched as a part of Tracy K. Smith's poet laureateship. The episodes feature a poem and a moment of reflection each workday, which offers its listeners "a different way to see the world – through poetry."

The Poet Laureate "seeks to raise the national consciousness to a greater appreciation of the reading and writing of poetry," according to the Library of Congress. How each laureate interprets this mission varies, but many in recent years have started large dedicated poetry projects to help more people discover an appreciation for the art form.

Limón's most recent book, The Hurting Kind, was published as part of a three-book deal with Milkweed Editions. The second book, Beast: An Anthology of Animal Poems, will be released in 2024 and will feature works by major poets of the last century. The third will be a volume of New & Selected Poems, which will be published in 2025. And there’s certainly more on the horizon for this talented poet.

September 2022 | TOPSinLex.com 201

For Limón, a key goal of her term is to help everyone understand that poetry isn't something that exists only in an academic space. Speaking again to WKMS, she said, "I would want to promote poetry as a tool to help us reclaim our humanity, to help us remember who we are, and to help us reclaim our, you know, for the lack of a better word, soul. And then I would also really like to, for us to recognize that poetry can help us repair our relationship to the natural world, to remember that we're connected, because I think so many people have felt so isolated for so long."

Limón was surprised, thrilled and honored by the announcement – so much so that she admits she floundered for words at the time. She joked, “We’re supposed to, you know, have a way with words.” Limón later summed up her “enormous gratitude” in a statement, saying, "This recognition belongs to the teachers, poets, librarians and ancestors from all over the world that have been lifting up poetry for years. I am humbled by this opportunity to work in the service of poetry and to amplify poetry's ability to restore our humanity and our relationship to the world around us."

Limón's one-year term as the Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry begins September 29th, and the position comes with an optional one-year renewal. Her duties will begin with a reading of her work in the Library of Congress Coolidge Auditorium. While the job is officially headquartered in Washington, DC, laureates are only required to be there for a few obligations. That means Limón will carry out her term right here in Lexington, where she finds the peace and relaxation she finds necessary to write – though the announcement of her appointment may mean a little less Whatquiet.areher duties, exactly, and what is a poet laureate?
