Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory In April 2022, Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory topped Good Housekeeping’s list of 25 Best Factory Tours in America for Families Who Love to Go Behind the Scenes. The Museum is instantly recognizable on Louisville’s historic Museum Row on Main, thanks to The Big Bat - an iconic downtown landmark. J.F. Hillerich and Son was turning Louisville Slugger baseball bats as early as 1884. Salesman Frank Bradsby became a full partner in 1916, and Hillerich & Bradsby Co. continues to supply “the stick of choice” for baseball’s greatest players. Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory celebrates the past, present, and future of baseball - America’s favorite pastime and signature sport. More than 8000 Major League Baseball players have signed with Louisville Slugger, starting with Honus Wagner in 1905. Those contract signatures are used for their bats' autograph brand and are featured on the Museum’s Signature Wall. The new-and-improved factory tour experience begins with a thrilling movie followed by a walk through the

production line. The tour concludes in a newly revamped gallery of superstar quotes about Louisville Slugger, where each guest receives a free souvenir mini-bat. Museum exhibits include lifelike sculptures, Johnny Bench Artifacts, Must-See Bats, the hands-on Hold a Piece of History and Batter Up! Bud’s Batting Cage exhibits, as well as those honoring Black Ballplayers. Barrels & Billets next door offers Custom Bourbon Experiences for guests 21 and over. The All-Star Experience is the ultimate behind-thescenes factory tour specially crafted to feature your favorite teams and players. Guests will have exclusive access to areas not available for public tours, such as The Bat Vault and the Archive Room. Each participant will receive a full-sized personalized Louisville Slugger bat. photos courtesy Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory For more information and advance tickets, visit sluggermuseum.com. Cave Hill Cemetery & Arboretum For almost 175 years, Cave Hill Cemetery has served Louisville as more than a sacred resting place. The nearly 300-acre Victorian-era National Cemetery and arboretum has provided a green oasis and preserved Louisville history. “From feeding ducks to learning about trees to visiting ancestral graves, Cave Hill Cemetery is a part of local family memories for more than seven generations,” says Marketing & Public Relations Director Kayla Wessling. Cave Hill was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979, and its National Cemetery of military graves was added to the register in 1998. “The Cemetery offers a protected ‘nature break’ for visitors,” containing more than 500 species of trees and shrubs. Water features include Beargrass Creek, a cave spring source stream, and five man-made lakes. “The life stories of individuals interred in Cave Hill form a patchwork quilt of the history of Louisville.” Notable interments include surveyor and patriot George Rogers Clark, three Union generals, three Confederate generals, over 400 Louisville suffragists, Kentucky Fried Chicken founder Colonel Harland Sanders, Kentucky State Senator Georgia Powers, boxing champion Muhammad Ali, and Heisman Trophy winner Paul Hornung. Cave Hill Heritage Foundation provides public tours. Save the date for Cocktails by the Lake on Tuesday, October 4, 2022. In other exciting news, PBS will feature Cave Hill Cemetery in a Season 2 episode of World’s Greatest Cemeteries. Season 2 begins this fall. photos courtesy Cave Hill Cemetery Cave Hill Cemetery is open daily from 8:00 am to 4:45 pm, seven days a week, weather permitting. We don’t care if you get the right answers – the first time or ever. We want you to be endlessly curious and always wonder about the world around you. We serve as a neutral place to talk about science issues that can often be evocative, and we are here to encourage creative, open-minded thinking about those issues.” Programming includes experiences for people of all ages and backgrounds. Enjoy facilitated experiments, daily demonstrations, themed activities, School’s Out Science Camps, family movie nights, and more. Current exhibits include Science in Play, MakerPlace, The World We Create, Uniquely Human, Discovery Gallery, The World Around Us, and One World by Air Cargo. K-Beauty

is an umbrella term for Korean skincare products. Thanks to Korean beauty philosophy, these products are created with health and hydration in mind and improve the health of your skin over time. Though these products generally aren’t made to be quick fixes for any skin blemishes you may have, you’ll notice the gradually improved state of your complexion. The emphasis of Korean skincare is to follow an individualized, consistent routine with products that use natural, unique, gentle ingredients. Many of these concepts have been passed down through multiple generations. Korean beauty philosophy recognizes that everyone’s skin is unique and has its own special needs, which is why understanding your skin is fundamental to your K-beauty routine. In Korea, people often spend a large amount of time exposed to the sun and other elements. Searching for ways to prevent and correct environmental and sun damage, Koreans found that natural ingredients such as rice water, mung bean, and camellia offered more balanced skin. Though discovered thousands of years ago, these ingredients are still used in modern K-beauty products because they are rich in antioxidants and provide hydrating properties. Korea’s economy grew exponentially around the 1940s, and what we know as the modern K-beauty movement began. Many original Kbeauty companies are around even today, such as Saengreen, Amore Pacific, and Shangpree. As the reach of these brands and products continued to progress, so did the incorporation of more ingredients and formulas. Now, a typical K-beauty skincare routine consists of products like essences, serums, ampoules, masks, and more, that all work together to promote healthy skin, layer by layer. Remember, the emphasis of Korean skincare is customization, so while one person’s routine could be 15 steps, your’s might be only five steps. Pay attention to the products and ingredients that work for your skin and adjust your routine over time based on what your skin is craving. Many K-beauty products are designed to be buildable, so just go off your intuition when caring for your own precious skin. Need some more hydration after a particularly hot, windy day? You can apply multiple layers of your essence instead of just one layer. Keep in mind that these are the bare basics of a K-beauty skincare routine; the whole point is to personalize it as you see fit. The most important thing is consistency and getting to know your skin. Though it may seem like a lot when you first begin, there are ways to streamline the process, like using new multi-tasking products that combine two separate steps, like a serum and moisturizer in one. Once you’ve got your routine down, it doesn’t have to take long, especially if you understand your skin. Choose to think of that time as “me time;” this mindset can help you look forward to your daily routine and a way to prepare or unwind from the stress of the day. Not only will you have some alone time, but your skin will be happy and healthy!

Below is a sample of a Korean 10-step skincare routine. Some days, you might complete three steps, while others, you might go the extra mile and complete 12. Use the 10-step routine as an overview to curate a perfect routine for your individual needs. 1.

Use an oil-based cleanser to remove oil-based impurities like makeup.

2.

Use a gentle, water-based cleanser to remove any remaining residue without stripping natural oils.

3.

Use an exfoliant to remove dead skin, but listen to what your skin needs. Most people only exfoliate once or twice a week.

4.

Use a hydrating toner to balance pH and provide hydration.

5.

Use an essence for lightweight, oilfree hydration; it can be layered or omitted based on personal needs.**

6.

Use face oils, serums, ampoules, or other treatments to target the specific issues you want to address with your skin. These products are the most personalized steps of the routine.

7.

Use a mask based on what you’d like to focus on that day, though masks aren’t necessary every day. Sheet masks, rinse-off masks, and overnight sleep masks are always great options.

8.

Use an eye cream to treat any dark circles or puffiness.

9.

Use a hydrating moisturizer to seal all the goodness in!

10. Use a sunscreen in the morning to protect from the sun and prevent premature aging.

Robin K. Hall & Michelle James of NTC Workforce Consulting by Dawn Anderson | photos by Dick Arnspiger

As

Co-Owners of NTC Workforce Consulting, Robin K. Hall and Michelle James are passionate about streamlining hiring practices and second-chance employment. Founded in 2007, NTC is a woman-owned, federal, state, and locally certified company with a mission “to provide quality services and uplift communities.” In providing Workforce Consulting, NTC helps businesses and organizations simplify complicated hiring processes and connect with justice-involved individuals seeking to reestablish their work history, provide for their families, and become valued members of society. The workforce consulting services aspect of the business happened organically. Most companies come to them. “The phone rings all week long with other companies seeking second-chance employment advice,” says Hall. “We choose to be forward thinking and not dwell on the past or old ways of doing business, but to see an opportunity to make a positive change for our community, for business, and always move forward. One of the positive changes was not to accept the business problem of today’s shortage of employees but to tap into individuals who are second-chance. This small change has impacted our lives, employees, and community.” Hall began her career in real estate in 1988 and moved into the construction field in 1992. James worked in government for 21 years. Their combined experience and expertise allow them to provide thorough strategies and sound advice with a culture of giving back. Hall and James teach and train other companies how to rebuild their labor workforce through second-chance. “We work with companies to deal

with HR and be more hands-on,” says Hall. “There is a lot of paperwork involved, and it’s important to have an open-door policy.” NTC works with several companies in many different industries, making the labor market work smarter for people and businesses. The process also opens doors for second-chance employment candidates who might not have technological access or savvy. They get the opportunity to be fairly interviewed because potential employers are aware of their justice-involved status before they go in and check that box. “We go in with a different lens,” says James, “making sure positions are filled and working with HR departments on flexibility.” According to Hall, “Employers are exhausted from the hiring process. We work through issues to find a path to move forward.” NTC Workforce Consulting and its happy clients enjoy ongoing business consulting relationships. Using the same positive approach, they develop programs on a case-by-case basis to fit each company, with methods that change according to their needs. Not only do companies benefit by resolving labor force shortages through the large second-chance hiring pool, but filling these positions more efficiently is also a cost-saving measure. Second-chance employees tend to be a loyal workforce, resulting in higher retention rates for companies. “Even companies who can’t change their process can change their perspective,” says James. “We teach them how to look at things differently and succeed at that.” Visit ntctrafficcontrol.com/consulting. Play Hard, Work Hard,

SWEAT HARDER. WHY DO WE PERSPIRE?

H

ot summer days are still ahead of us and exercising in hot temperatures alerts our body temperature. Some perspire more than others. Genetics plays a role in some of this, as does the environment. Many feel that perspiring after a workout is a sense of accomplishment, which it most definitely is. Hard work results in sweat. For others, a shower can not come fast enough to help cool their body off and remove perspiration. Did you know that sweat is vitally important for body temperature regulations and overall health? Most of us think of sweat as this unpleasant odor and wetness our body produces. All humans sweat for one reason: to dissipate heat and maintain internal temperature. Sweat is actually a way of cooling off the body. Our normal temperature is around 98 degrees Fahrenheit. On hot summer days, our temperature can rise, resulting in harmful outcomes such as heat exhaustion or even heat stroke (this happens when body temperature reaches over 103 degrees). It can happen quickly. A run in the park, yard work, or riding in an unairconditioned car can put stress on our bodies.

As soon as our body senses “danger,” our hypothalamus in our brain alerts our sweat glands to start cooling our body down by sweating. When you sweat, try your best not to wipe the sweat away with a towel. Temperatures can actually rise. Instead, blot the area, wear a headband, or let sweat do its thing..roll off your body naturally. Women have more sweat glands than men, but men actually produce more sweat than women.

HYDRATE! You lose water when you sweat. It is imperative to replenish what you have lost. Replenish with water and electrolytes. When you sweat, you not only lose water but also the minerals that help deliver fluids to the cells in your body. The average person loses 1-2 liters of sweat per hour. To avoid dehydration, fuel your body with water and electrolyte drinks such as coconut water, watermelon water, Pedialyte, Liquid IV, and electrolyte infused waters. These drinks contain potassium, magnesium, sodium, and calcium which are depleted during a sweat infused workout. Sweat out your toxins with a healthy workout. Always replenish what is lost in your body. Refuel and recharge. Be careful not to overdo activity in hot environments. Do your best to exercise in cool, well ventilated areas. Hydrate well in advance, consuming 64oz of water a day to keep your body hydrated. Every individual is different, so listen to your body. If you are thirsty, your body is already dehydrated. This is the main way the body alerts you of dehydration. •

Taking Steps Towards Better Health:

Walk This Way! by Fran Elsen

Fitness experts and doctors alike have been touting the many benefits of walking for years. As an avid walker myself, there is much more to this mood-boosting exercise than even I was aware of. According to leading health organizations, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), adults need at least 2 ½ hours or 150 minutes per week of aerobic physical activity. This activity should be at a moderate level, such as a fast-paced walk. Only 53% of Americans meet this physical activity guideline. Fortunately, walking is a free and fun way to get there!

Evidence suggests that walking for exercise provides tangible benefits for many people. While running is often believed to be more effective than walking for weight loss, the following health benefits offer a strong incentive to make walking a part of your weekly exercise routine. Improved Cardiovascular Health The American Heart Association suggests that a walking program is a smart starting point to improve heart

52

AUGUST 2022 | TOPS Louisville

health. A research review published in Current Opinions in Cardiology found that walking can play an important role in the primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease in younger, middle, and older people. A scientific session from the American College of Cardiology suggests that walking for at least 40 minutes several times a week at an average to fast pace is associated with a near 25% drop in the risk of heart failure among postmenopausal women. Better Bone Health Since walking is considered a “weight-bearing” exercise, it forces you to work against gravity while providing a good level of resistance for your bones. It may also slow the progression of bone loss. There have been many studies evaluating the effectiveness of walking on people with osteoporosis, and while this exercise alone doesn’t appear to improve bone mass, it has been found that walking does limit progressive loss. According to the Arthritis Foundation, walking is especially helpful if you are overweight or living with arthritis.

Decreased Blood Pressure One way that walking may help to reduce cardiovascular disease risk is that it may also have a positive effect on blood pressure. We all know that high blood pressure is one of several risk factors that can increase one’s chances of developing heart disease, so walk to help lower that blood pressure! Reduced Risk for Type 2 Diabetes A joint statement from the ACSM and the American Diabetes Association states that studies indicate moderate exercise such as brisk walking reduces the risk of Type 2 diabetes. Walking for at least 30 minutes per day reduced this risk by approximately 50%. Increased Longevity Who doesn’t want to live longer? Some studies have linked regular walking programs to longevity, but it gets tricky when you have to eliminate lifestyle factors. If you choose to walk outdoors, as I do, you might also gain mental benefits. Being outside is considered restorative by mental health experts because it may help you reduce stress, replenish mental fatigue, improve your mood, boost selfesteem, and elevate your perceived health. Getting There There are all kinds of gadgets, pedometers, and smartwatches on the market that can easily track the number of calories you burn while walking. Estimates are based on your weight and the duration and intensity of the walk. As with any exercise program, you should always check with your physician to ensure your walking plan is the right one for you. Speaking from experience, I can honestly say that walking, either solo or with friends (or my pooch!) has been something I have truly enjoyed, especially these last 12 months of crazy times with the pandemic restrictions. Whether you enjoy it for the scenery, the conversation, the fresh outdoor air, or that feeling of doing something “good” for yourself, just do it and reap the health benefits along the way. It’s free and something almost all of us can take advantage of at any time! •

Tips to Fit in Walking: Morning, Noon and Night from the American Heart Association Like to move as soon as your feet hit the floor? Before you go to bed, get your walking clothes and shoes ready so it’s easy to put them on quickly and head out the door. Eat a piece of fruit or a few spoonfuls of yogurt for a quick fuel-up. Walking to your favorite jams may help get you moving. Just make sure you can still hear traffic. If it’s still dark, wear reflective clothing or carry a light. Be sure to stretch a bit at the end of your walk. Watch a morning news show or check your email while stretching. Is lunchtime the only break in your busy day? Schedule your lunchtime walk in your work calendar. Think of it as an important appointment. Keep everything you need for walking at work. This way you won’t find yourself saying “I forgot my shoes. I can’t go.” Recruit some coworkers to join you. You can keep each other on track. Depending on your walking pace, the weather and how much you sweat, you may be able to wear your work clothes and just put on athletic shoes. Or you may prefer to change into a t-shirt. In cooler weather, you might need a jacket, hat or gloves. If you’re walking briskly, you’ll heat up in a few minutes, so don’t overdress. Bring your lunch or pick a route where you can grab a quick healthy meal at the end of your walk. Is working out after work your idea of happy hour? Have a light snack about an hour or two before you leave so you don’t experience an energy dip and talk yourself out of walking. Try yogurt, a handful of almonds or a piece of fruit. Pick a route without heavy traffic because rush hour can increase air pollutants. Do some shoulder rolls and other warm-ups to release the stress of the day before heading out. If it’s already dark, wear reflective clothing or carry a light. For more heart-healthy tips like these, visit heart.org

This all-blue look utilizes various patterns and textures to add visual interest. Paired with neutrals and natural materials, it makes a big impact while remaining completely cohesive.

Decorating an outdoor space for every season can be a costly endeavor. If you’d like to stay fresh without breaking the bank, take a tip that all the top interior designers already know: mix high and low. Splurge on a few timeless pieces that will seamlessly transition throughout the seasons. Then, fill in your décor with inexpensive accessories that can be swapped out as time – and the latest trend – passes. One helpful tip may be to think about which items will likely fare the worst against the elements and consider less expensive options. But if you’re in love with some a “splurge” piece that might not last – cushions, for example – then consider spending a little more for protective coatings.

ACT Ashley Sayler of CASK Southern Kitchen & Bar

local restaurant owners in 2020, Ashley Sayler made the strategic decision to pivot and rebrand her “New American soul food” restaurant as CASK Southern Kitchen & Bar. In keeping with Louisville diners’ wants and needs at a crucial time, she created a family-friendly environment with more reasonable prices, hoping to produce more volume sales to keep the business afloat, all while expecting her first child. The revised affordable restaurant concept proved to be a big hit, from carryout and curbside pointof-sale to indoor and outdoor dining with TVs, patio, and picnic tables. by Dawn Anderson photos by Dick Arnspiger

CASK is a from-scratch kitchen serving authentic Southern cuisine, handcrafted cocktails, and a wide bourbon assortment. Sales have quadrupled since the rebranding. The restaurant generated revenue of $1.2 million in 2021. Ashley Sayler is driving this tremendous success as an entrepreneur, wife, and mother of three children aged two and under. How does she do it?! Ashley is a former athlete whose competitive spirit has not diminished over the years. Her father influenced her work ethic. “He set an example of working all the time to build something from nothing. He taught me that working hands-on if there is a problem, you figure it out.” That includes maintenance on the restaurant roof if need be. Striving to lead by example, greeting guests, bussing tables, doing dishes, and cleaning bathrooms, Ashley does whatever it takes so her team knows she is “in it with them.” Her food and beverage experience comes from her previous work with Sullivan University and Churchill Downs. Ashley was still managing food and beverage programs at Churchill Downs as she planned her original restaurant concept. At CASK, Ashley is learning to rely more on her team, co-led by General Manager Chastity Owens. Until she had her twin daughters last August, Ashley worked 14-hour days. “Now, I try to set boundaries and trust my people in place.” She still handles all payroll, onboarding, costing, marketing, social media, and content. Her husband’s CFO skills come in handy for budgeting. Ashley’s family and friends are an invaluable support system. But it’s also not uncommon to see all three kids at the restaurant. Son Colin turned 2 in April, and fraternal

twin girls London and Phoenix celebrate their first birthday on August 3. Husband Travis, an engineer licensed in eleven states, also cares for their children every evening. London’s blue and Phoenix’s brown eyes help him tell the girls apart. Phoenix was so-named after being delivered breech thirty minutes after London. Ashley’s mother helps at home and at the restaurant, and Ashley’s friends know to come to her at work to spend more time together. “For restaurants, being short-staffed is the new pandemic.” As busy as she is with work, Ashley never knows when the daycare will call that one of the kids is sick. “You learn how to pivot, which is hard for me because I am super OCD. Just ask my husband and staff. They know the rule: If it’s not on the calendar, it doesn’t exist.” Alone or personal time may seem a luxury for Sayler but absolutely necessary, if only in small doses. “I prefer silence in the car, no music, nothing. It’s my own little getaway. At home, my husband is really good about knowing when I need to chill out by myself with quiet time upstairs. I try to work out when I can and step outside for walks to clear my head. And when I need to talk something out, I can rely on my friends, the squad I don’t deserve.” As for the future, Ashley hopes to spend more time with her children. “The older they get, the more they realize how much you’re not around. I could be a stay-at-home mom if I wanted, but I would be really bad at it.” She plans to continue as an excellent example for her team, doing what needs to be done for the restaurant. A second CASK location is in the works. And who knows what surprises await to keep things interesting. “We plan, God laughs.” And so does Ashley Sayler. •

raving a big, juicy burger, but the thought of firing up the grill under the hot summer sun is not so appealing? We found five Louisville restaurants taking the burger game to the next level. Here is a burger for everyone with none of that annoying cooking or clean-up to worry about.

B

Bunz Burgers

randon Detenber bought Bunz Burgerz, which began as a Build-Your-Own Burger concept, from the previous owner in 2011. Detenber, a WKU graduate formerly in management with Cafe LouLou and Jason’s Deli, changed the menu, adding specialty burgers and sauces. Since then, Bunz Burgerz has received Best Burger awards and list placements and expanded to a full dining room. “Burgers are my specialty at home,” says Detenber. “Bunz Burgerz has a different atmosphere with counter service, local art, graffiti, and a hip-hop punk-rock vibe that I hope carries over to the new location.” Bunz Burgerz serves flattop-grilled smash burgers with Detenber’s special seasoning (which goes on just about everything!) complemented by the house-made specialty sauces. “Our top seller is The Baxter Ave. Similar to a breakfast burger, it is a double burger with fried egg, cheddar cheese, bacon, red onion, and Bunz sauce.” Detenber describes Bunz sauce as a savory, tangy cajun mayo, great for dipping hot and crispy French Fries and as an automatic accompaniment to Onion Rings. Detenber’s favorite burger is The Red State double with pepper jack cheese, sweet & spicy Pops’ Pepper Patch Habagardil Pickles, grilled onions, grilled jalapeños, mayo, and Bunz original recipe hot sauce. For a popular single, try The Lexington Roadhouse burger with pepper jack and cheddar cheese, bbq sauce, and an onion ring. Bunz Buffalo Chicken Sandwich is also a hit with grilled chicken breast, habagardil (habanero/garlic/dill) pickles, lettuce, tomato, ranch, and homemade spicy garlic buffalo sauce. This month, Bunz Burgerz moves from 969 Baxter Avenue to Paristown Pointe. Billed as “Louisville’s First and Finest Collective Food Hall,” The Village Market in Paristown is a foodie destination for locals and travelers alike, with an all-local, all-independent lineup of restaurants under one roof. “We are excited to make this move that has been in the works since 2019. All the concerts and events at Paristown will make it an exciting place for us to be.” Visit bunzburgerz.com and follow the Bunz Burger Restaurant Facebook page.

BurgerIM

wners Veronica Michel and Nirmal Raj held the soft opening of BurgerIM on March 7, 2020, with a Grand Opening celebration planned for March 21, 2020. On March 14, 2020, BurgerIM closed for business in anticipation of Governor Beshear’s executive order to curb the spread of coronavirus in Kentucky. Unfortunately, they opened for business too early to qualify for the Small Business Administration's Paycheck Protection Program loans.

Despite these challenges, BurgerIM went from a franchise to an independent restaurant just two months later, adding specialty burgers to the menu and weathering many weeks of carryout-only business. “We make beef burgers with locally-produced natural Angus beef delivered to us fresh daily," says Raj. “Our gourmet burgers, including Spanish, Indian, Greek, and vegan options, are all made in-house.” He shares some of his favorite burger selections. The 1/3 lb Spanish Beef Burger brings the heat with habanero aioli, grilled jalapeno, leaf lettuce, and pepper jack cheese. The Cowboy is 1/3 lb Angus piled high with bacon, cheddar cheese, an onion ring, and barbecue sauce. Summer is the perfect time for the Mediterranean-inspired Greek Lamb Burger with tzatziki sauce, mixed greens, shaved onions, and Roma tomato. On the lighter side, try the Chili Chicken Burger: a 1/4 lb spicy chicken patty with arugula, tomato, onion yogurt, and raita aioli. The Aloo Tiki Burger is a satisfying vegetarian choice with potato and peas & carrot patties, sriracha aioli, lettuce, tomato, and Pepperjack cheese. Pair them up with some good draft beers, including crafts and seltzers. Burger IM offers a 10% student discount, a 15% frontline worker discount, and a 25% police and firefighter discount. BurgerIM, located in The Vogue shopping center, caters to local businesses and hospitals and has been voted one of the best burger joints in Louisville. Grind Burger Kitchen

iz and Jesse Huot knew “next to nothing” about the restaurant business when they began research for opening Grind Gourmet Burger Truck in 2011. “Everything we learned, we learned the hard way. We visited dozens of burger places literally all over the country, studying the beef, blend, cooking style, shape, and grind. We combine the best ingredients and techniques to create our burgers.” The Huots opened the first brick-and-mortar location in June 2014, moved to NuLu less than two years later, and celebrated their tenth anniversary in business in April 2022.

Over the last decade, Grind Burger Kitchen has won multiple local awards and landed on several national “Best Burger” lists. Food Network’s Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives featured their Veggie burger and Cuban sandwich in December 2016. The Veggie burger (which can be made vegan upon request) is a house-made pattie with a well-seasoned blend of chickpeas, lentils, quinoa, mushrooms, and roasted veg topped with smoked ketchup, lettuce, tomato, and onion.

Experienced Louisville Chef Adam Kirby recently joined the Grind team. Grind beef burgers are all 1/3 pound made from house-ground, hand-trimmed, and grass-fed beef, cooked to order. Liz and Jesse highly recommend the B&B with Brie cheese, bacon, and smoked habanero jam. In addition to the Southern, Chain, and Pork burgers, Grind Burger Kitchen offers themed burger specials. “We strive to stray from the norm.” On the side, try the House Cut Fries or Brown Butter Brussels with citrus and brown butter vinaigrette. Don’t overlook Grind Burger Kitchen’s sandwich offerings. Pescatarians will appreciate the fried Mahi Mahi Fish sandwich with avocado, citrus slaw, and jalapeno crema. Grind’s Cuban features pork belly, Kentucky ham, Swiss cheese, spicy dill pickles, garlic mayo, and yellow mustard. Guy Fieri said they deliver on the classic Cubano sandwich “in every category.” Visit grindburgerkitchen.com. Follow @grindburgerkitchen on Instagram for the latest burger and sandwich specials.

Game

ocated in Louisville’s historic Irish Hill neighborhood, Game is a “unique, rustic, casual restaurant” known for wild game and exotic meats “sourced from local farmers as much as possible,“ says Owner Tim Lewis. He left his corporate job of 20-plus years managing food service for stadiums and arenas across the country to follow his dream of opening his own place and doing what he loves - “creating and serving incredible food to our wonderful guests!” Game offers 14 different types of meat for burgers handground in-house, nothing frozen, with seasonings based on the region of the animal. The Kangaroo burger is topped with greens, tomato jam, and cheddar and served on a pretzel bun. July’s Burger of the Month was Shi-ba Shing-ga Yak, locally sourced from an Eastern Kentucky farm. Tibetan seasonings, black sesame seed brioche, and toppings of muenster cheese, house curry mayo, artisanal greens, red onion, and tomato enhance the yak flavor. Game serves up three Field options (AKA veggie burgers). The Roasted Corn Poblano Burger comes with greens, tomato, pickles, Brie, and smoked truffle mayo on a brioche bun. The grilled or fried Portabella Burger is served on an onion bun with Swiss cheese, caramelized onions, roasted beet horseradish sauce, and greens. Or try the Fried Green Tomato on an onion bun, with greens, cran-apple slaw, pimento cheese, and BBQ sauce. But first, Lewis recommends some Starters. The deconstructed Scotch Eggs include soft-boiled eggs, smoked pork belly, smoked truffle mayo, and cranberry-jalapeno jam. Enhanced with parmesan, poblano, and rosemary, the Roasted Bone Marrow is delectable spread on an artisan baguette. Buttermilk Fried Frog Legs come with a jalapeno tartar sauce. Wild Game Nachos with housemade chips, nacho beer cheese, pico, sour cream, and sliced jalapeno feature a different meat each week. Visit Game to see upgrades to the Exotic Lodge and Moose Yard Patio. Find the complete menu and dozens of Build Your Own Burger options at wildgameburgers.com. ASK Southern Kitchen & Bar recently added a new burger to their from-scratch, authentic Southern menu, and the already delicious burger selection gets a rich upgrade option. With imported Japanese cattle fed on sugar-rich Kentucky bluegrass, Kentucky Hills Wagyu Farm now provides 100% Wagyu beef exclusively to CASK. The rich, marbled meat dry-aged for 21 days is ground for the Why Not Wagyu Burger and available as an upcharge to the traditional dressed Burger and the super-Southern CASK Burger.

The Why Not Wagyu Burger is six ounces of 100% Wagyu with applewood bacon, smoked gouda, and crispy onions. For a classic American cheeseburger, try the 1/3-pound smashed Burger with lettuce, tomato, Duke’s Mayo, pickles, and your choice of cheese on a brioche bun. The Cask Burger is 1/3-pound smashed beef with bacon, pimento cheese queso, fried egg, smoked tomato mayo, and pickles. All burgers are served with one of ten Southern sides. Owner Ashley Sayler suggested summertime signature cocktails that pair well with the burgers. The Patio Pounder features Lunazul® Reposado Tequila, with triple sec, watermelon, lemon, mint-infused simple syrup, and fizzy water. Mama Said There’d Be Days Like This is a fruity concoction of berry-infused tequila, kiwi, lime, and grapefruit with black lava sea salt. Bourbon lovers will appreciate the refreshing simplicity of Maker’s Hard Lemonade with Maker’s Mark® Bourbon, mint-infused simple syrup, and lemon. CASK will celebrate Kentucky Proud Week August 16-21 with their signature Shrimp + Grits: slow-cooked Weisenberger grits, gulf shrimp, andouille ham gravy, and Southern greens on the side. Flavorman

The Women Behind

by Dawn Anderson | Courtesy Photos

Creating flavors for well-known beverage brands worldwide, Flavorman counts among its dozens of employees their “beverage architects,” most of whom are women. Several are Black women with inspiring stories of their experiences in the STEM field and how they became interested in their line of work. They are passionate about their careers and spreading the message to young girls that women of color make significant contributions, even in traditionally male-dominated industries. Kadeja Davis is Lab Manager for Flavorman, overseeing the laboratory, training techs, vendor communications, ordering, and formulating research and development on beverages. She always wanted to be a dentist - and still does! Born and raised in the Bahamas, Davis began studying Biochemistry. She moved to the US to continue pursuing her undergraduate degree. After struggling in Biology, her international advisor convinced her to switch her studies to Chemistry because she was “so great at it.” “You have to find your own space” in a male-dominated STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) industry, says Davis. “Honestly, for me, it’s like working twice as hard, not only as a Black woman but just being a Black person.” She likens the experience to being in a barrel, not only working her way up from the bottom of the barrel “but also trying just to get inside the barrel.” As a Black woman

in the industry, Davis feels “it’s difficult, but it’s promising.” She and her colleagues are making strides. “We are being recognized and acknowledged. It’s long overdue.” Seeing Black women fighting for other Black women encourages Davis. “They’ve made a way for us.” She says she thinks of her Alpha Kappa Alpha, Incorporated sorority sisters who are in all areas of STEM. “Some are engineers, and some are doctors and lawyers and teachers. They really inspire me to know that whatever you want to do is an option for you. You don’t have to be limited. I’m also inspired daily by my parents who are always very encouraging in everything that I do and ensure me that ‘God will guide you!’” At Flavorman, Davis has learned that her day-to-day, just showing up and doing her best, “All those things don’t go unnoticed. I want to tell people who feel like they’re not seen or not appreciated, ‘Somebody sees you. Somebody notices you. You’re made to do whatever it is you want to do.’” Dorian “Dori” Joseph is an Assistant Beverage Architect who assists the Senior Beverage Architect, provides new samples to clients, and works with retainer clients on new ideas, tastings, and feedback. Her story in STEM is different in that she struggled with math and science in school. Joseph

initially came to Flavorman’s bottling line through temp service placement. She became fascinated with the process, and her bottling supervisor Walter was very open. “I didn’t feel like any question was a stupid question to him. I could just ask him anything.” Without a science and math background, the industry can be intimidating for Joseph at times. “But being here at Flavorman, I can say that no one makes you feel as though they’re better than you because they have a certain type of degree.” The experience has been eye-opening and interesting. “It gives me the confidence to go back to school and get a food science degree.” Joseph was raised by a single mother who inspired her never to give up, no matter the circumstances. Working at Flavorman, she feels well-represented, and it has given her the confidence as a Black woman to wear her natural hair. A Halloween party at Flavorman where Joseph dressed in 70s attire gave her the chance to wear an afro. “I was hesitant because I didn’t know how people would respond to it. Everyone here embraced my hair. All day everyone told me how beautiful my hair is.” The owner of the company pulled her aside just to compliment her. “They see me. They see Dorian. They see the person I am instead of my hair, skin color, or background.” Monica Horn is an Associate Beverage Architect with Flavorman. She makes beverage flavors from formulas and assists in making beverage ideas come to life for clients. She developed an interest in the sciences and math in grade school and was lucky to have supportive, involved parents. Horn’s interest in STEM subjects continued through college. But it wasn’t until she landed with Flavorman that she found a true kinship in the field. “Previously, in my jobs, I felt small and unheard due to a lack of opportunities. They didn’t really ask my opinion. It was definitely hard, especially if you were the only Black woman.” Horn’s parents still serve as her inspiration. “My parents, with how hard they’ve worked and how often they put their efforts and resources into me, made sure that I succeeded in any way possible.” She moved to Louisville from Michigan last August. When she researched Flavorman, she came across photos of her future coworkers. “I saw pictures of them on Instagram with their natural hair out, and honestly, that’s not something you usually see in any STEM fields.” Horn instantly knew she would love working at Flavorman. “I feel safe. I feel I’m heard. If I have any issues, even the CEO will talk to me. He’s very welcoming. They’re all open arms. Complete 180°.” Sharing her experiences is essential to Horn as she hopes to inspire young Black women interested in STEM. She stays involved through her sorority (Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.), community service, and her job. “I honestly think exposure and experiences make young Black girls more interested in what they see. They should prioritize themselves and be passionate about what they love. Nothing comes easy, but it’s all worth it in the end.” Visit flavorman.com. Dream Center Academy Christian School by Dawn Anderson | Courtesy Photos

Unity and partnerships are the driving forces behind Dream Center Academy Christian School, a “One-StopOne-Shop, Home-Away-from-Home Empowerment Zone” in the Chickasaw neighborhood. Dream Center Academy Christian School and New Day Ministries founder Tod Moore and valued partners and sponsors hosted a capital campaign event on July 19, 2022, at MercedesBenz of Louisville. The 2022 “A Night of Inspiration” Gala Fundraising Dinner is Saturday, August 20. Moore says, “Invested partners are coming together to make things happen because they believe in the vision of Dream Center Academy Christian School.” Tod Moore was born the youngest of three boys raised in the former Cotter Homes housing project, now the site of the Park DuValle neighborhood. His parents sold drugs to make ends meet, and his father was in and out of prison for most of Tod’s life. Despite being one of four Western High School seniors named “Most Likely to Succeed” in the 1979 yearbook followed by a stable, well-paying job with UPS, it wasn't enough to keep Tod from “the generational curse” of drug dealing. In May 1993, Tod was sentenced to 25 years to life for his part in an August 1991 gang-related incident resulting in

the deaths of three men. He turned to Christianity on September 28, 1992, and began his ministry behind bars. Tod assisted with prison chapel services, led Bible studies and prayer meetings, and mentored and tutored his fellow inmates. On June 7, 2012, Tod envisioned a “Dream Center” to serve youth in blighted West End neighborhoods, planting the seed for Dream Center Academy Christian School. After serving 26½ years in prison, he was released on January 2, 2018. Tod received an official pardon from then-Governor Matt Bevin on December 7, 2019. Finally, New Day Ministries’ outreach was able to expand with community empowerment and youth engagement. New Day Ministries L.O.V.E. (Love Overcomes Violence and its Effects) WALKS focus on Louisville neighborhoods impacted by poverty, unemployment, youth violence, gang activity, and low academic performance. The L.O.V.E. WALKS provide “opportunities to speak with residents, listen to their issues, assess community needs, identify potential community revitalization projects, and meet the young people affected by these issues.“ Through L.O.V.E. enrichment programs, West End residents learn about Dream Center Academy Christian School. According to Moore, it is intentional. “We are infiltrating communities with the love of Christ.” New Day Ministries and Dream Center Academy Christian School are based on a 4-L approach to building relationships: Listen to Learn to Love to Lead, inspired by the Holy Spirit during Tod’s time in prison. With Christian love and a family atmosphere, the private school has been in operation since January 3, 2022, and follows the JCPS calendar. DCACS started with ten students, half unable to read and write. By the first open house on February 18, the children could not only read and write but presented “TED Talks” to the forty-seven guests in attendance. Dream Center Academy Christian School is located at New Covenant Baptist Church at 1190 South 40th Street, the first of nine satellites planned across West End neighborhoods. New Day Ministries acquired a van (with a vision for seven more) for their Safe Transportation Portal, providing students safe, reliable transportation to DCACS. The school has a 5-1 student-teacher ratio and has so far enrolled 25 students for the 2022-2023 school year. Teachers who buy into the DCACS vision are encouraged to express their interest through the online form found at ndky.org/serve. Dream Center Academy Christian School is launching its

STEAM magnet program in partnership with the University of Louisville Speed School of Engineering. Parents have a $300 per child buy-in each year to ensure they remain invested in their children’s education. Tuition is $5000 for elementary students, $6000 for middle school, and $7000 for high school. That is where fundraisers such as the upcoming Gala Fundraising Dinner come in. “A Night of Inspiration,” the fundraising gala and silent auction benefiting New Day Ministries and Dream Center Academy Christian School, takes place at Ice House on Saturday, August 20. Guests will enjoy a cocktail hour, dinner, live music, and Inspiring Guest Speaker, Darnell SuperChef Ferguson. While in prison in 2015, Tod Moore read an article about SuperChef in The Southeast Outlook and prayed for an opportunity to work with him. Moore wrote a letter from prison that burned in the SuperChefs restaurant fire before Ferguson could read it. The two men finally met in 2018, and Ferguson filmed an endorsement for a capital campaign video. “He is the perfect fit to speak about the importance of private Christian education and how it is changing lives,” says Moore. “Gala attendees will see how we empower God’s Children to soar to new heights. The kids will show all they’ve learned to do and how Christ has taken them from where they were to where they are. The possibilities are endless for these kids.”

Hosted by the Community Foundation of Louisville, Give for Good Louisville returns Thursday, September 15, 2022. According to Community Foundation of Louisville Marketing & Communications Manager Christina Miller, “Give for Good Louisville is an online giving day that demonstrates how the small contributions of many make a huge impact across Kentuckiana. On September 15, people will have the chance to learn about participating organizations, attend local giving day events, and support the causes they love most at giveforgoodlouisville.org.” Since its 2014 inception, the annual event has raised over $42.5 million for qualifying organizations in Jefferson, Bullitt, Oldham, Shelby, and Spencer counties in Kentucky, and Clark, Floyd, and Harrison counties in Indiana. “Give for Good Louisville is your chance to take intentional action towards the issues our community faces today by getting involved as a donor, fundraiser, or advocate,” says Miller. “It’s also an excellent opportunity for families to role model

philanthropy and inspire the next generation to give and live generously.” Miller encourages people to connect to smaller, grassroots organizations they may never have given to previously. These organizations are often “boots on the ground” and closest to people who need help the most. She is inspired by how organizations collaborate to support each other’s work, such as Fund for the Arts ArtsMatch with Queer Kentucky. Give for Good Louisville offers local companies the chance to demonstrate their commitment to philanthropic work while engaging their employees and customers in unique ways. Like an employee giving program, local companies can easily sign up to host a business fundraiser during the online giving day. “When businesses support local organizations, everyone benefits. It is not a day of competition, so much as a day of collaboration.” A little healthy competition doesn’t hurt either. Churchill Downs Incorporated came out on top as the #1 giver last year.

What motivates people to give during Give for Good Louisville versus any other day of the year is the cash prize pool that goes directly to participating organizations. Donors can have the impact of their gift go further through random $1,000 boosts, and organizations can unlock cash prizes by achieving certain fundraising goals. Thanks to the generosity of this year's prize partners, including Presenting Prize Partners Sam Swope Family Foundation and Churchill Downs Incorporated, Give for Good Louisville 2022 will have the largest prize pool in giving day history at over $450,000, compared to last year's prize pool of $375,000. 2021’s Give for Good campaign brought in donors from all fifty states and over forty countries worldwide. Over 22,400 donors gave more than $8.9 million. In 2021, donors on average made larger gifts than in previous years and gave to more than one organization. Miller is hoping to exceed $10 million in 2022. “We have had a streak of record-breaking years, and we want to keep that energy!” Become a fundraising champion by creating an individual fundraiser profile and sharing the link to your networks. The profile is easy to set up, and the link involves more community members in fundraising. For more information, visit giveforgoodlouisville. org and cflouisville.org. A Veteran on the Move: JEREMY HARRELL by Heather French Henry, MDes courtesy photos

New faces are showing up in strong ways to bring fresh awareness about resources to veterans and their families. One of those faces is Jeremy Harrell, a U.S. Army Combat Veteran who served in Operation Iraqi Freedom in the Global War on Terrorism. Jeremy served honorably for nine years and was a Non-Commissioned Officer before getting out of the Army. After leaving the Army, he went to school at Mid-Continent University studying Business Management. He then went on to become involved in Operations Management with companies such as UPS. However, he knew he was called to do more and wanted to connect with other veterans within the community.

"There was definitely a need in this region for that, a place for service members, veterans, and first responders to come and get connected," says Harrell. "Since then, we've been working really hard to help them recover from trauma, whether it's combat-related or not. We help them fend off homelessness, equipping them to go out and lead in their communities and get back on their feet."

"I remember coming home from Iraq and there wasn't a lot of solid organizations that were saying, 'hey, we're over here, we want to help, and I knew I had to step in," Harrell recalls.

Since its establishment in 2017, the club has grown significantly and will be opening a new office in St. Matthews, "We are thrilled and excited to be opening a multipurpose facility in the Louisville area, which has highest number of Veterans in the state, and we were determined to be where the need is the greatest," Harrell said.

In 2017, Jeremy founded Veteran's Club INC, which has grown into a premier nonprofit that assists Veterans in

been featured on a variety of national programs, including Fox and Friends, CNN Prime Time with Chris Cuomo, Real America's Voices, 700 Club, History Channel, and more. His list of awards is impressive and his participation within the local and state community shows that he means business. One of those awards is the coveted induction into the Veterans Hall of Fame in 2021. "It was a true honor to have been both nominated and selected to be inducted, especially on September 11th of 2021. There's not a more meaningful day to be recognized," Harrell says. Aside from his passion for his fellow veterans and their families, Jeremy has his own family standing by his side helping to facilitate his mission. Erin Harrell, Jeremy's wife and co-founder of Veterans Club, Inc., is involved with his outreach initiatives. She provides case management services, including intake, needs assessment, service planning, and evaluation. Erin is also the Team Lead for their Veteran's Club Assistance Program. "I have an incredible family of servant leaders and am fortunate to have their full support in this mission." "In fact, they are all very active in the organization on different levels, not just Erin and I, but our kids as well," Harrell said. When asked about future plans, Harrell remains focused, "I pray God continues to bless the organization and send us to the broken-hearted so that we may assist. My goal is to continue to grow the organization into a household name, provide as many wrap-around services as possible, and to continue to create unique programs and alternative methods of providing healing to those in need. We are just scratching the surface, and we aren't going to stop moving the needle forward. •
