In 14 years, the annual Bike to Beat Cancer event has raised more than $5.2 million in support of Norton Cancer Institute. There are options to fit all fitness levels. For those looking for a family outing and a taste of cycling, the Family Ride is the right speed. It costs $10 per rider, follows a relaxed 5-mile route around Norton Commons and ends at the Family Fun Zone at Norton Cancer Institute – Brownsboro, where riders enjoy free food, games, bounce houses and face painting. There’s also an hourlong spin ride and a virtual ride for those who can’t get out on Sept. 10. More serious riders can choose from 15-, 35-, 65- or 100-mile routes, each with their own fundraising requirements, pit stops, motor

“The event is a celebration of those who are impacted by cancer, and it remains a solemn event for the many who ride, volunteer and participate,” said Joseph M. Flynn, D.O., MPH, FACP, chief administrative officer, Norton Medical Group, and physician-in-chief, Norton Cancer Institute. “An act of riding bikes together can serve as a symbol of hope, validation and perseverance. It’s another way of bringing people and our community together.”

In addition to the thrill of the ride and the satisfaction of contributing to lifesaving cancer initiatives, dozens of community sponsors will provide plenty of perks. As riders gather at the starting line at Norton Cancer Institute – Brownsboro, they’ll enjoy free breakfast from Chickfil-A and, once they return to cross the finish line, they can feast on food from Qdoba and enjoy stretches with KORT rehab specialists. Riders of the 65- and 100-mile courses also get a special free lunch from Morrison Healthcare Food Service served at Camp Hi-Ho.

Desk Pad

WorldChairishPerigoldMarket 21TOPS Louisville.com | September 2022

One-third of your life. That’s how much it’s been estimated that the average person will spend working. You’ll spend just as much time sleeping. But we’d bet that your work desk isn’t nearly as comfortable or inviting as your bed. (Okay, maybe not a fair comparison.)

The point is, even though our workspaces are where we spend a huge portion of our time, they rarely feel like they’re truly our spaces. Often, that’s due to the fact that office policies prevent us from bringing our personalities to our desks. But that’s a mistake. According to the Harvard Business Review, their studies found that employees who can personalize their areas feel a greater sense of belonging, enthusiasm and engagement with their work.

The easiest way to transform the overall feel of your desk is a desk pad. If you’re unfamiliar, this is a large rectangle of leather, felt or vinyl that you place under the portion of your desk you use most. Not only does it protect the surface from wear and tear, it offers a soft spot with lots of grip for writing, typing or sorting papers. Because they’re so large, choosing a style that reflects your personality can quickly change the entire vibe of your office. A classic brown leather desk pad will obviously feel different than a fun vinyl one, emblazoned with sunflowers.

Another reason people might hold back from putting their innermost selves on display at work is a misplaced concept of “professionalism;” the idea of separating your work self from who you are when you clock out. While it’s absolutely important to keep many aspects of your private life out of the office, showing a little personality has been shown to make others perceive you as more approachable and more of a team player. Where you work is obviously a part of the equation. A home office will be 100% under your control, whereas an openconcept office may have tons of rules about what you can and can’t personalize. As always, refer to the rule book before you make any decisions. That said, we’re encouraging you to make your workspace your own! Add little flourishes to your desk that will help coworkers, clients and supervisors get a sense of who you are – and make you feel more connected to the work you’re doing. And that’s just good business!

If your office isn't client-facing but you have coworkers, be sure to get their permission before unleashing a fragrance on their senses. That's all we ask.

“Funny” Stu

In this world of memes, it’s almost natural to want to share something you found that makes you laugh. But in the workplace, that’s a minefield. Not everyone will share your sense of humor, and things you might take lightly, others may be offended by. It’s best to tread lightly with the funny business.

Dirty Dishes Old, stinky bowls, takeout containers and coffee mugs aren’t pleasant – for you or anyone else. Clear them out!

Don’t incorporate controversial statements in your workplace décor (or conversation!) unless your work environment clearly supports that choice. Even then, the potential for interpersonal conflict really just doesn’t seem worth it –and could potentially land you in HR, or worse, turn off a potential client.

Scents Plug-in air fresheners, diffusers, candles and room sprays are lovely. Unfortunately, they can be a menace to people with certain allergies (I’m one; your “air freshener” is my migraine.) How embarrassing would it be to have a client who has to leave because of your candle?

For managers, consider this; according to a study by the Harvard Business Review, photographs of an employee’s loved one actually make them less likely to engage in unethical behavior. The presence of even a single photo of a family member or partner can help cut costs like expense report padding or inventory theft.

Photographs

The Desk Set

One of the frustrations of a good desk set is that it can be difficult to find all of the pieces you need in the same material or style. If you’re dead set on a blush pink desk set, for instance, we recommend incorporating an accent neutral (in this case, white would be perfect) that’s a little easier to find.

Accessories

Personal photographs in the workplace are sometimes viewed negatively. But we think that’s just silly! These photos give coworkers and clients a glimpse into your personal life – thus making you more approachable and trustworthy in their eyes – while helping you find a little calm in your day-to-day work life.

If you’re sensitive to featuring photos of the people in your life at your workplace, you still have options to bring that sense of comfort to your desk. Consider photos of your pets, a favorite vacation spot or photos of yourself during important life moments.

While having a matching set – complete with a pencil cup, business card holder, tape dispenser, folder organizer, stapler and paper tray – isn’t necessary, it’s a classic desk styling trick that makes the whole space feel intentional. It also can bring a lot of personality to the space. A clear acrylic set with sharp lines gives a very different impression than traditional rosewood.

Bring It All Together

• 25TOPS Louisville.com | September 2022

When in doubt, accessorize! Like pulling together an outfit, accessories are where the magic happens. Display your interests, hobbies or personal style through some wellchosen décor items. For instance, if you collect vintage cameras, select one or two to display in your office

A personalized workspace will make you feel more “at home” in your workplace; you will feel more productive, connected to your work and enthusiastic about your work’s mission. If something in your workspace is making you feel disconnected, distracted or less productive, speak up! Your supervisor might be able to accommodate your need, whether that’s different lighting or more comfortable seating. You deserve it!

Pantyhose

Hemlines

Dressing for the modern office has become a bit of a question mark. What used to be hard and clear rules have loosened over the years, blurring the lines of what “office attire” really means. While there are some rules we’re not sad to see go, there are some that remain up for debate. While you should obviously follow your workplace’s policy, officers with looser policies can look to these guidelines for help decoding the dress code.

In many modern offices, tidy jeans with clean lines (and no holes) are considered perfectly appropriate, especially on days when there are no important client meetings. While this may have some of the old guard clutching their pearls, it’s actually a key strategic move. Not only does allowing jeans make employees feel more comfortable–physically, obviously, but also socially with one another–it can convey to clients a relaxed, welcoming environment.

It’s almost universally agreed that pantyhose are no longer required attire. Some business formal or service industry workplaces still cling to this outdated rule, but most have given up the ghost on this one. If you’re visiting an office that requires hose, don’t feel obligated to put them on unless there’s a pressing cultural sensitivity issue. And if you prefer wearing hose, you’re always welcome to do so – in any environment!

Jeans

The hard-and-fast rule has long been that knee-length (or longer) is appropriate for skirts and shorts in the office. But we’re comfortable saying that in all but the most formal business environments, four inches above the knee is probably not going to raise any eyebrows.

This is such a contentious issue, and one we’re happy to settle. Pool sides, flip flops and sports sandals should be left in the closet, even if you were planning to (heaven help you) wear them with socks. Dressy sandals and peep-toe pumps are just fine for women.

Open-Toed Shoes

Hats Hats are making a comeback in a big way. But most people still agree that hats should be removed when indoors. If you want to avoid the dreaded “hat head” when you take doff your chapeau, bring along a hair clip or comb.

Showing Skin

Most office dress codes hold that employees should avoid showing as much of their skin as possible for the comfort of clients as well as other employees. We agree with the sentiment of it, but feel that there’s lots of room for nuance. We think sleeveless tops and dresses are fine for women–after all, what’s more classically office chic than a shift dress–but inappropriate for men. For everyone, a good guide for necklines is to hold your hand crosswise at the base of your throat; exposing more than that is iffy territory. Outfits that reveal bellies, backs or peeks that skin that a traditional one-piece bathing suit wouldn’t cover should be left at home.

Athleisure

Pajamas

The old adage used to be, “Dress for the job you want, not the job you have.” Well, if we all did that, we’d show up to meetings dressed as either Batman or Mark Zuckerberg. In today’s world, the best ad vice is to look to the sharpest dresser in your office for cues on how to style yourself. If you’re worried about dressing yourself to visit another office for a meeting or interview, look to their social media to get clues on the office’s style culture. If that doesn’t turn up anything, aim for formal and subdued with one accessory that shows off your personality. Remember, you can't go wrong with the classics!

The Last Word

Unless you work in mattress quality control testing, the answer is a resounding “no…” even if you’re on a Zoom call.

With the rise of WFH, athleisure crept into standard casual workwear. And designers responded by mak ing athleisure pieces that cleverly bridge the gap between the streets and the office! So while we’d be remiss to write this category off entirely, this is a case where it’s best to tread lightly. We recommend only using one athleisure piece, then compensating with more dressy, structured pieces elsewhere in the outfit. For example, try a pair of (thick, prefer ably black or brown) leggings beneath an oversized button-up. A casual athleisure top with slacks and a sharp blazer can be quite casual-chic. In very casual offices, dressy sneakers are welcome with a pretty dress or well-tailored outfit. That said, as a rule of thumb, hoodies, jogging pants and super-tight workout gear are best left in your gym bag.

“The health of the Black community will be determined by how well we strengthen Black-led institutions,” says Dr. Kevin Cosby. He’s the President of Simmons College, Louisville’s only HBCU (Historically Black College and University). The Simmons College experience is about giving the students opportunities that have historically been denied them, while also following the tradition of other HBCU graduates such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Thurgood Marshall, and Diane Nash, who not only gained knowledge for themselves but gained knowledge to help benefit their community.

“Being a leader means to cast a compelling vision and inspire others to make that vision a reality,” Dr. Cosby says. “Black Louisvillians have historically been the victims of extraction and exclusion. Simmons is the only ‘come-up’ HBCU in American history that lost its campus but came up from economic deprivation, social injustice, and racial misclassification. Seventyseven years later, it returned to the campus it lost; it earned accreditation and was designated as an HBCU.” Dr. Cosby has curated an environment where students can explore the world from a familiar place with the support of a welcoming, learning family. Developing and nurturing the potential of tomorrow’s Black leaders – tomorrow’s difference makers – is their purpose. It represents the dreams of the formerly enslaved persons who built their college more than 140 years ago.

“We’re motivated by the prospect of real change, especially in the area of racial equity coming to Louisville,” Ron continues. “I sense that we are finally and belatedly ready to look –honestly – at our racial history and that we want the next chapters to be different. That will take a lot of work and the movement of hearts – and financial capital – but I am convinced that this journey will determine the future of Louisville for all its residents.” Ron adds a note of optimism that even with all the challenges before us as Americans that get us down, frustrated, alarmed, and afraid, he believes in and is guided by the wisdom Stevie Wonder offered us half a century ago. And that is: ‘Love’s In Need of Love Today.’”

We have just finished a Strategic Plan that has us leaning into that potential,” he says. Ron believes in never succumbing to the seduction that he must always be right just because he is the boss. “By not doing so, one stays agile and dedicated to continual improvement,” he says. “Also, understanding that the environment in which one works is always evolving and being attuned to those changes will keep one’s enterprise competitive and innovative.”

Prior to 1959, Colonel Harland Sanders and his wife, Claudia, resided in Corbin, Kentucky, where they spent their time developing and perfecting Kentucky Fried Chicken's now world-famous chicken recipe. Once Interstate 75 opened and bypassed Corbin – and ultimately the Colonel's restaurant – this prompted the Sanderses to pick up their things and head to Shelbyville, Kentucky. They then purchased Blackwood Hall, a 125-year-old estate that served as the couple's residence and the corporate headquarters for Kentucky Fried Chicken.

They say behind every successful man, there is a strong woman. In this case, that woman is Claudia Sanders. If you're a fan of country charm, delicious fried chicken, and meals like your grandma used to make, then the Claudia Sanders Dinner House is the perfect spot for you. Lucky for you, it's located in Shelbyville, Kentucky... and is currently for sale!

Blackwood Hall and the Claudia Sanders Dinner House

With KFC's international success, the Sanderses soon learned they needed more space for their business and constructed today's Dinner House. The building then served as office and warehouse space to accommodate the more than 600 KFC restaurants. After the couple sold KFC to a group of investors in 1964 – including former Governor of Kentucky John Y. Brown, Jr. – they needed a new enterprise to focus their attention on. Because the corporate offices were no longer housed at the Sanders' estate after the sale of KFC, the recentlyconstructed building turned into a hustling and bustling southern restaurant.

Originally named The Colonel's Lady after the Colonel's beloved wife, this later became what we now know as the Claudia Sanders Dinner House. With their extensive knowledge of southern cooking and the restaurant industry, this new endeavor was a nobrainer.

The Sanderses established yet another business with southern hospitality at the forefront, along with downhome cooking and old-fashioned, family-style service. Even today, if you visit the Dinner House for a meal, you can see these values still remain. You can even take some southern favorites home with you in the Claudia Sanders Dinner House Cookbook!

When a fire occurred the day after Mother's Day in 1999, the original Colonel's Lady burned to the ground. Though a tragedy, this gave way for a new and improved facility with larger banquet facilities and an enlarged state-of-theart kitchen, but the same country charm of the old dinner house. The new Claudia Sanders Dinner House opened the same year and is still open for your dining pleasure.

If you want the chance to be a part of the Sanders' story, now is your time. The almost 30,000 square foot property located in Shelbyville, Kentucky is currently for sale with Six Degrees Real Estate, along with the trademark and likeness of the Claudia Sanders name. The sale not only includes the 25,000 square foot restaurant, but also the grand 5,000 square foot Blackwood Hall, where the Sanderses resided for more than 25 years. What's more, the house contains memorabilia from Colonel Sanders, including his original Kentucky Colonel certificate, a "Happy Birthday" letter from President Nixon to the Colonel, a monogrammed Bible, a money clip, and more fascinating historical items from the couple's life.

Morgan Hancock and Jonathan Klunk are the expert real estate agents working to get this amazing property, which conveniently sits along Kentucky's Bourbon Trail, sold. "There is so much rich history included in this sale. It's exciting to think about the potential that lies ahead for the right buyer," says Jonathan. With this being the dynamic duo's first year in business together, it may be hard to believe they've acquired this feat in the form of a Kentucky legend. As they are both Kentucky Colonels themselves, Morgan and Jonathan couldn't be better suited to make this sale. "There's hardly anything more quintessentially 'Kentucky' than Fried Chicken and Bourbon!" Morgan says, "I see an incredible opportunity here to expand the Claudia Sanders brand to other industries, such as Bourbon. And personally, I think Kentucky is well overdue for seeing a woman's face on a Bourbon label."

The duo were recently named Louisville's Top Leaders of Creative Property Marketing, and have used their marketing skills to gain global exposure for this extensive property. In fact, the listing has already been featured by over 75 media outlets, including The Today Show, Food & Wine Magazine, iHeart Radio, Fox Business, the Washington Post, and Business Insider. In other words, if you want a piece of this pie – or in this case, a piece of chicken – you better throw your hand in the bucket fast! For more information about this Kentucky landmark, you can visit www.TopKentuckyListings.com or contact Morgan or Jonathan via email.

Shannon says that although she did not make the official Rookie Class, she hopes it is not over for her and Sports Illustrated. Through the experience and joining a supportive Swimfluence Network of other models, Shannon met women from all over the world, including two new best friends for life. “Women need women sometimes,” she says. So, what’s next for the accomplished runway and print model? “I’m going to continue to do what I’ve been doing and go to auditions,” she says “I'm trying to teach my daughters to live without reservations. Riley’s twin

If anyone knows you have to be patient to reach your dreams it’s Shannon Burton; in July, the 50-year-old Louisvillian sashayed down the Miami Swim Week catwalk for Sports Illustrated. It was not always easy for the 6'1" model, who once played basketball for Butler and Duke–she had to overcome darkness to become the bright light she is today. Shannon took a leap of faith while healing from the devastating death of her son, Riley, who was almost 4 months old. She was 35 years old at the time of the infant’s death and looking for a way to feel whole again. “I said, ‘I don’t care what I do, I just want to have a passion for life again,’” she says. It was then that she was discovered by Heyman Talent Agency out of Louisville. She was always an athlete and being over 6 feet tall as a woman definitely worked as an advantage for her commercial, print, and runway career. Fifteen years later, after signing with the Helen Wells Agency in Louisville and Modelogic out of Chicago, Shannon decided to take another chance–to fulfill her goal of becoming a swimsuit model for a world-renowned company. In November 2021, with help from her amateur photographer husband Bart, she submitted to Sports Illustrated’s Swim Search for their Rookie Class, where members would receive a spot in the 2023 Swimsuit edition of the magazine. Shannon, unfortunately, did not make the cut to be one of 13 finalists, but submitted again in April when the contest opened again. She received an email in June asking to be interviewed by the editor and assistant editor of the magazine, and on the call, they asked her to rock the runway of Miami Swim Week. In July, Shannon and Bart flew out to Florida so that she could work the event and walk the red carpet. As cameras flashed, Shannon could feel her kneecaps shake with nervousness, but then she looked over to her husband to see tears in his eyes–she did it! “I’m trying to get everything out of this life,” she says. “I’m trying to break boundaries.”

If you're looking to peel back your lived-in skin to reveal a rejuvenated, fresh complexion, a chemical peel could be your answer. A chemical peel is a type of exfoliation where a chemical solution is applied to the skin and removed once the solution has penetrated the layers of the skin. Most often, they're applied to the face, but some treatments can be used on the arms, legs, neck, shoulders or scars anywhere on the body. These treatments can provide a number of skin-loving benefits, such as preventing acne, diminishing fine lines and wrinkles, and revealing glowing skin. We've peeled back the layers so you can learn more about the basics of chemical peels! by Allyson Mattingly

SKINap-PEEL 51TOPS Louisville.com | September 2022

Glycolic Acid Peels

If you've tried just about everything to get your glowing, youthful skin back, but nothing seems to work, it may be time to try one of these chemical skin care treatments. Peel back the layers today by scheduling a consultation with your skincare professional!

• September 2022 | TOPS LOUISVILLE52

Glycolic acid increases collagen production, brightens skin tone, reduces wrinkles, and is especially effective for acne Whenscars.searching for an at-home glycolic acid peel, look for a formula with a glycolic acid strength of 8-15%. The risk of negative side effects increases with the strength of the formulation, so it's best to trust a professional with more intense peels.

Phenol Peel

Salicylic Acid Peels

Glycolic acid is an Alpha Hydroxy acid (AHA), a category that contains others like citric acid, lactic acid, and tartaric acid. Glycolic acid, derived from sugar cane, maintains a structure that allows it to penetrate the layers of the skin.

While AHA peels exfoliate the skin, Beta Hydroxy acid peels (BHA) can penetrate deeper layers of the skin by attaching to the skin's natural oils. The most popular acid in BHA peels is salicylic acid, which has anti-inflammatory properties that can reduce acne-induced irritation. BHA peels are a great option for those wanting to reduce the appearance of blemishes, as salicylic acid acts as a powerful clear-out for pores. Medium peels penetrate down to the middle layer of skin and help with moderate skin problems such as scarring, fine lines, wrinkles, age spots, and discoloration. Definitely consult with your skin care professional before starting an at-home medium-depth peel. Avoiding direct sun exposure is recommended until the entire treated area has regenerated.

Trichloroacetic Acid Peel

Deep peels are designed to penetrate deep into the layers of the skin to offer long-lasting, dramatic facial restoration. These peels target damaged skin cells, severe scarring, deep wrinkles, and discoloration. While superficial peels can be done at home and medium-depth can be performed at home with caution, deeper peels should always be administered by a skin care expert.

Superficial peels are often described as "lunchtime peels," as they involve little to no downtime and are suited for mild skin problems. These peels minimally penetrate your skin but provide gentle exfoliation. Often, these chemical peels are available in at-home treatments, but it's best to consult your skin care professional for guidance before starting a new regimen. Most often, you will be advised to use a daily SPF to protect your skin after using the product (which you should be doing anyway!)

Trichloroacetic acid peels, or TCA peels, penetrate deeper than glycolic or salicylic acid peels, making them an excellent option for people with sun damage, pigmentation issues, or deep wrinkles. TCA can be used alongside salicylic acid, but since it is offered in a variety of strengths, make sure the formulation percentage is low within your chosen solution. For reference, 10-30% TCA provides a superficial peel, 30-40% TCA provides a medium-depth peel, and 50% and above provides a deep chemical peel that must be administered by a professional.

Phenol peels are the deepest type of chemical peel, with carbonic acid as their peeling agent. The concentration of carbonic acid can be combined with salicylic acid to produce dramatic results and can be so intense that some concentrations of a phenol peel can only be administered once in a lifetime. A phenol peel is an effective remedy for intense sun damage, deep scars, significantly aged skin, and even precancerous growths.

Types of Foam Roller

We have all had sore muscles after a workout..sometimes two to three days after a workout (delayed onset muscle soreness). We may try stretching, ice, heat, and even anti-inflammatory medicines to help ease or numb that dull achy pain. There are exercises and stretches you can do on the roller that feels just as good as a massage (in my opinion). Foam rolling is a self myofascial release technique. What this means is that this roller is an alternative medicine therapy claimed to be useful for treating pain and skeletal muscle immobility by relaxing contracted muscles and improving blood flow. The foam roller increases the mobility of your muscles and connective tissue surrounding a joint. It actually stimulates the nervous system to relax tension in the tissues. It increases blood flow, aiding in delivery of nutrients and oxygen to muscles, helping relieve muscle tightness and lactic acid.

wellnes s ® Roll your way to Release Stress and Tension September 2022 | TOPS LOUISVILLE54

There are different sizes when it comes to foam rollers. Some are long (36” length x 6” diameter). Some are cut in half, which are great for balance and stability exercises as well as stretch and release exercises. Some are short (around 24 inches). When you are wanting a back release or wanting to stretch longer muscles and perform a full body release, a longer foam roller is best. Short foam rollers are easy to maneuver if you want to release tension in a smaller area on your body (example-shoulder or Theneck).bumpy foam roller. We call these foam rollers “bumpy” because they are indeed covered with raised texture that look and feel like bumpy knobs or wave-like ridges. This is designed to “dig in” those trigger points and release knots.

Firm foam rollers are the densest and are hard when you sit or lie on them. If you are looking for a deeper, more intense release, this one is your go to!

Low density foam rollers or soft foam rollers are used for when your muscles are incredibly sore. They are soft and more comfortable to lie or sit on.

Cowhide Leather

Faux Suede These tend to be made from similar materials to faux leather. They are sometimes more waterproof than real suede, but often just as likely to get dirty.

Suede This soft, velvety material is more breathable than its leather cousins. That said, they tend to be mag nets for dirt and grime. They also get wet and soggy easily.

Knit boots offer more stretch, much like a sock. The downside is that much like a sock, these can take on water very easily.

When you think “leather boots,” this is what you’re thinking of. These have a nice feel and are very du rable. They do require a lot of care and aren’t very breathable. These tend to have a limited range of color and texture options.

Faux or Vegan Leather

Synthetic leathers come in a variety of construc tions, often featuring polyurethane. They tend to be less expensive than leather and fairly durable with a more impressive array of colors and tex tures. Inexpensive faux leather can sometimes peel and scratch at the toes and heels.

RightStuff!

Lambskin This leather is buttery soft. Unfortunately, that means it’s also more prone to scratches, stains and cracking. This leather tends to show up on highend purses and boots.

Perhaps even more important than the style of boot, the material you select can make the difference between style joy and buyer's remorse. What may look like an easy, breezy boot might become a soggy mess in the autumn rain. An interesting textured material may feel nice, but how will it stand up to dirt, grime and fuzz ies? We'll help you narrow down your choices with a quick guide so you walk into the shoe store well-informed!

From ostrich to kangaroo leather, there are tons of options out there. Each comes with its own set of pros and cons.

Exotic Animal Leathers

Patent Leather This leather has been coated for a high-gloss finish. It looks great, but can show wear and tear quickly.

The Louisville Artisans Guild

ARTSthe LOUISVILLEin

The Louisville Artisans Guild is Kentucky's oldest guild dedicated to pursuing excellence in arts and crafts. It began in 1956 when five local craftsmen met at a local bar to share their success and frustrations while pursuing careers in the visual arts. The group has grown over the years to include not just artists but also craftsmen, educators, students, and many others. It reflects its commitment to practicing and supporting roles in the visual arts.

Dedicated to providing opportunities to initiate and participate in exhibits, shows, educational facilities, and the exchange of information, the LAG is a proud group of like-minded individuals. Young artists are encouraged by LAG through their high-school Emerging Artists section of the Showcase, as well as the LAG Art Scholarship. LAG is proud to showcase its membership with a mixture of art and craft mediums for the public. Throughout the years, LAG has presented the annual Fine Arts and Crafts Showcase held the first weekend in November at Triple Crown Pavilion's Ballroom. "I want more year over year," says Tonya Tate, LAG Showcase Chairperson. "I want to showcase all the talent LAG has to offer, inspire people to be in awe of what is right here in front of us, and for them to talk about us and look forward to the show next year. I want emerging artists to know LAG is the group to be involved with." You can join the LAG this year at the 2022 LAG Showcase on November 5th & 6th, held at the Triple Crown Pavilion off Plantside Drive. For more information, visit louisvilleartisans.org

The following Saturday, Sept. 24, the LO launches its Pops series with Broadway singing star Kelli O’Hara joining conductor Bob Bernhardt. The LO season also includes the “Music Without Borders” series programmed at various community venues, and a new series of appearances across the Commonwealth of Kentucky. by Bill Doolittle

Violinist Tessa Lark, who plays a violin that’s as old as any you’ll ever see, and is about as up-to-date a musical star as any you’ll find, appears with the Louisville Orchestra in the symphony’s season-opening concerts, September 16 and 17 in Whitney Hall. Music director Teddy Abrams has the baton, with the orchestra also performing Igor Stravinsky’s Symphony in Three Movements. Abrams will also introduce the three composers selected for the symphony’s new Creators LarkCorps.is a vibrant young talent, with a raft of classical credits and an ambitious concert tour schedule. She studied at the New England Conservatory of Music and Juilliard, but also grew up in Richmond, Kentucky, playing with her dad in a gospel-bluegrass group called Narrow Road. So she was just a hike away from Appalachian mountain music in Eastern Kentucky, and a few miles from formal classical violin study in Cincinnati. In 2015, Lark was chosen to play an Antonius Stradivarius violin owned by the Stradivari Society of Chicago. In concert performances she’d occasionally delight classical audiences with fast-bowing encores of old time fiddling. Now it’s a special signature. At the completion of the four-year loan of the 1763 Strad, the society asked Lark to perform with an even older instrument, a violin made by G.P. Maggini in 1600. If you’re counting, that makes her “new” violin a 422-yearold instrument! Which, she says, plays beautifully — from mountain music to Mozart. For the orchestra’s season-opener, Lark will perform the Violin Concerto in D, by Wynton Marsalis, the famous jazz trumpeter and student of American music. Audiences may expect to hear a little bit of everything musically American in Marsalis’ piece -- prompting the orchestra to dub the concert, “Swing, Swagger and Sway.” Take it away, Tessa!

Moving into its 71st season, Louisville Ballet continues the work of a 21st Century ballet company with an array of innovative productions that celebrate its past, future, and our shared community. Meant to uplift women in dance, and amplify artists pushing the boundaries of the art form, Season of Transcendence lays the groundwork for the future of the "Transcendenceballet.means many things to many people. For us, it means to go beyond the bounds of what is traditionally associated with ballet," said Robert Curran, Artistic Director of Louisville Ballet. "This season, we are embracing and celebrating those artists – dancers, choreographers, musicians, and others – who are not afraid to bravely push against the traditional confines of dance. This season's performances will be nothing short of spectacular."

75TOPS Louisville.com | September 2022

Often our access to art and creative expression ends when we leave school. Arts in Neighborhoods initiatives ensure arts programming in community centers, neighborhood festivals, and all the places we gather. Artists of every discipline create and showcase their work every day, across our shared neighborhoods, with support from Fund for the Arts.

Once we see ourselves as artists, we can’t help but see the city of artists that we live in, the artists at the end of our street, in our own families, in our mirror. Arts in Learning programs like 5x5 and Teacher Arts Grants provide funding that brings artists directly into classrooms, encouraging the unfettered imagination of kids and closing the opportunity gap that exists when students don’t have access to arts and culture. This year, Fund for the Arts partners with Jefferson County Public Schools building enrichment programs in the new Elev8 centers meant to support students and families with additional resources.

The Fund for the Arts believes every one of us is an artist. “I Am An Artist.” is the big idea that starts with the individual, empowers a sense of belonging, and encourages all of us to tell our truth through expression and creativity. The people at Fund for the Arts know that art is a right, not a privilege, and they’re supporting the arts, artists, and arts organizations to keep us all dancing, singing, and creating.

In almost 75 years of history, Louisville is one of just a handful of cities that hosts many different homes for artists and audiences. Fund for the Arts supports the institutions that you grew up with, that you know and love. But they also support new organizations creating more opportunities, no matter what your passions are.

“Opera isn't just listened to; it's experienced," says Barbara Lynne Jamison, General Director of Kentucky Opera. "It remains eternally relevant. There's nothing like it."

2022 marks the 70th anniversary season for Kentucky Opera, and it's perfect timing as the company emerges from covid. "This is the season that welcomes us back home," Barbara says. "We held small shows last year, but now back in a big way at the Brown."

The season begins with La bohème, the timeless classic that inspired Rent. “It's a story about community, and that's so important for us,” Barbara says. “We work to tie every show with the current values of our shared world. We are not a museum. We intend to serve the community with opera, not just serve opera to the community. We don't present, we produce."

Next up, it's a Tango Opera - an Operitawritten by Astor Piazzolla. "It's a multimedia evening that's all about music and musical metaphor. It will make for a fun evening and great for those who might not think they like opera."

This year, shows will not just be held on weekends but also mid-week evening and matinee performances, making for a season with more shows than ever before. You can find out more at KYOpera.org

To make a Clean Dirty Martini, combine 3 parts of vodka with one-part dry vermouth. Shake or stir well, and strain into a martini glass. Add a large cube of frozen olive juice and garnish with two Spanish Manzanilla olives on a Theretoothpick.isdebate over whether the martini should be shaken or stirred. The correct answer is always a matter of preference. What your guest prefers is what your guest shall have. Stirring a drink is much less aggressive than shaking, and the result is similar. My preference is to follow in the footsteps of Mr. Bond… "shaken, not stirred."

by Jonathan Klunk

The Vesper Martini is certainly an acceptable drink. But I offer you a slight variation on the classic; Earnest Hemingway’s drink of choice and the one the Ritz claims to be “The Best Martini in the World!” - the Clean Dirty Martini. Served exclusively at the Hemingway Bar at the Ritz Paris, the Clean Dirty Martini has a recipe that is closely guarded and never discussed, just like Colonel Sanders’ recipe. However, even though we do not have the exact recipe, we do know their secret - a large cube of frozen olive juice that slowly melts in the clear liquid of vodka and vermouth, releasing olive flavor bit by bit. Very clever and never overpowering.

One thing you will notice is that none of the below suggested cocktails contain Bourbon.

Making an expertly blended cocktail is always in fashion. Whether you are entertaining a small group at home or making a drink to relax after a long day, a gentleman should always know how to make a proper cocktail!

MODERN

Albeit a cardinal sin not to include Bourbon in a cocktail in Kentucky, I offer you a departure from the expected and give you something a little more unexpected as we explore outside the cask.

Here are three cocktails every gentleman should have in his repertoire.

James Bond did not invent the martini - but he certainly made it famous.

When entertaining close friends, it is good to know their choice of beverage and always have it available to them. (Some of our friends have been known to keep a bottle of their favorite wine or Bourbon at our house to drink when they visit.)

The Clean Dirty Martini

the Gentleman A Gentleman's Guide to Cocktails

In Casino Royale, Bond orders a Verper Martini with exact instructions: “Three measures of Gordon’s, one of vodka, half a measure of Kina Lillet. Shake it very well until it is ice-cold, then add a large thin slice of lemon peel.”

The Negroni

The Gimlet is another gin cocktail that is both refreshing and simple. It also has the gift of being unexpected. When you offer someone a Gimlet, you may find they are pleasantly surprised and impressed with your taste and cocktail-making abilities.

The Gimlet is comprised of three common ingredients: Gin, lime juice, and simple syrup. Simply combine 5 parts Gin, 1 part lime juice, and 1-part simple syrup into a shaker with ice. Shake until well blended, chilled, and slightly frothy. Then strain into a champagne coup or rocks glass. Crafting a cocktail may be intimidating at first, but rest assured, it is easier than you might think. Try making the drinks outlined in this article and see how your guests respond. I believe they will think you are entertaining just like a true gentleman should.

91TOPS Louisville.com | September 2022

The Gimlet

A classic Italian aperitif designed to stimulate the appetite before a meal, and identified by its bright red hue and slightly bitter flavor, the Negroni is an international cocktail favorite. This delicious beverage is simple to make and easy to enjoy. Crafted from only three ingredients: Gin, Sweet Vermouth, and Campari Bitters, as well as an orange slice or peel to garnish. To make, combine equal parts of all ingredients over ice and stir until chilled. You can make individual Negronis in the glass in which it will be served, or you can make a larger batch in a mixing glass and strain into cocktail glasses filled with ice. And never, never forget the orange. This is a critical component. If you prefer a bitter taste, add a touch more Campari. For a smooth finish, add a dash more of gin. Be sure to use a quality gin and vermouth for the best, authentic flavor.

(optional)

Crumble and brown ground chuck and sausage in the bottom of a large stock pot over medium-high heat. Drain off fat. Add in other ingredients. Stir to combine. Cover pot and simmer over low heat for 2-3 hours, stirring occasionally. Note: this recipe is intentionally very easy to scale up. Whether you're feeding your family or a whole football stadium, this will be a crowdIf you want to use a crock pot, we recommend making your chili ahead, refrigerating, then warming it up in your slow cooker. This will give the flavors plenty of time to develop. The browning stage is very important, just won't get if you cook this recipe startto-finish in your crock pot.

and it brings a lot of flavor to the party that you

As soon as there's even the smallest hint of a chill in the air, our editorial team immediately starts talking about our favorite soups and stews. While we adore a good loaded potato soup and would never turn down a big ol’ bowl of chicken noodle, the topic almost always veers into chili territory. Which type is the best? Who likes it spicy?

With tailgating season upon us and the summer’s bounty flowing in from our gardens, we’re all itching to cook up a pot of chili. While we don’t have any answers for which kind of chili is the best, we’re here to present recipes to help you decide for yourself this fall!

Tailgate Chili

VeganIngredient”“SecretChili September 2022 | TOPS LOUISVILLE94

Note: No need to mention that this flavorful chili is vegan; just tell 'em the secret ingredient is the cocoa.

3 T olive oil 1 large yellow onion, diced 4 cloves garlic, minced 2 jalapeños, seeded and diced 2 T tomato paste 4 T chili powder 1 T ground cumin 1 1/2 tsp. smoked paprika 2 T oregano 3/4 c. dry red wine 2 c. vegetable broth 2 15-oz. cans pinto beans, drained 1 15-oz. can navy beans, drained 2 T cocoa powder 1 1/2 T soy sauce 2 chipotle peppers in adobo, chopped 1 T adobo sauce from can 1 28-oz. can diced tomatoes 1 T maple syrup

Heat a Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add olive oil until heated, then add onion. Cook until golden brown, stirring occasionally. Add garlic, jalapeños and tomato paste. Stirring frequently, cook until tomato paste darkens in color. Stir in chili powder, cumin, paprika and oregano. Deglaze using red wine. Simmer for 3 minutes until the smell of alcohol goes away. Add vegetable broth, beans, cocoa powder, soy sauce, chopped peppers, adobo, tomatoes and maple syrup. Stir well. Season to Bringtaste.to a boil over high heat, then lower heat to a simmer. Cook, stirring occasionally, for up to 2 hours.

If you have picky diners that will be asking, “where the beef?!” we suggest adding another secret ingredient: browned faux-meat crumbles. For a 100% vegan pot, choose soy crumbles. If you’re okay with vegetarian/mostly vegan, Impossible sausage would be great in here! (adapted from Rainbow Plant Life)

Fancy Shmancy

Roasted sweet potato cubes, pumpkin seeds, a drizzle of hot honey and Greek yogurt

No matter what style of chili you prefer, the toppings you choose can easily take your bowl to a whole 'nuther level. Here's a little inspiration to get you thinking outside the pot!

Jalapeño slices, tortilla chips, guacamole, Cotija cheese, a dash of Choulula and a wedge of lime

1 T. olive oil 1 yellow onion, diced 1 jalapeño, seeded and diced 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 tsp. ground cumin 2 4.5-oz. cans green chilies 3 boneless, skinless chicken breasts

5 c. chicken broth 2 15-oz cans white beans, drained 1 1/2 c. frozen corn

White Chicken Chili

Backyard

Pitching a tent in the backyard, pulling out an old radio and telling ghost stories under the stars… backyard camping is a timeless family tradition. You get to enjoy the novelty of a stay in the great outdoors without schlepping your gear all over creation – and without being miles from indoor plumbing. Whether you’re hanging out with your besties, kiddos or just your partner, here are some ways to make the experi ence a memorable one.

If you really want to take your backyard camping experi ence to the next level, consider incorporating a theme. Maybe it’s retro camping with throwback games (Twister, anyone?), kitschy decorations and vintage equipment. It could be a summer camp vibe where you make team pennants, weave lanyard keychains and improvise a camp theme song. Or maybe you make the entire event a bougie glamping affair, with lush seating and gourmet snacks!

Camping

Go For a Theme

Good Grub You’ll get hungry at some point in the evening, so plan on bringing some snacks. Whether you pack a picnic, roast weenies over the fire or get out the grill for a full-on cookout, sharing a meal outdoors is always a lot of fun. Don’t forget camp cooking classics like S’mores, popcorn, orange brownies and campfire elotes!

If you don’t have a camping tent – or you just want to make the experience even more fun – building your own can be really magical. Tarps, canvas drop cloths, sheets or blankets can make a great improvised tent. Dress up your shelter with greenery, string lights and lots of cushions.

And don’t worry; we won’t tell if you make it more of a glamping trip than a camping trip. Here’s the Pitch…

Everyone loves to gather around the campfire and tell stories. While traditionally those are scary stories, there’s nothing wrong with telling silly stories, long jokes or in teresting mythologies. We also love playing campfire story games, like Telephone or Round-robin, where everyone goes in a circle and improvises a little bit of the story.

There’s nothing better than movie night in the backyard. Set up a projector and hang a white sheet or canvas drop cloth to serve as the screen. Remember to be courteous to your neighbors with the volume! Want to make it a no-screens night? Instead of playing a movie, serve as your own entertainment! More dra matic campers could try a little improv or stage a silly play.

Have Fun!

The whole point of camping is to let loose a little and enjoy the outdoors. There may be mishaps and a few bug bites, but you'll be so glad you took this little staycation adventure!

Speaking of games… coordinate a scavenger hunt that will have everyone laughing. Pass out flashlights, a list of items to find and a way to collect them, like a basket or backpack. Need ideas? It could be natural elements, like sticks, leaves or flowers. It could also be fun things you place around your yard beforehand that will be used later in the eve ning, like campfire marshmallow forks, lanterns, toys or outdoor pillows.

Stories to Tell in the Dark

Everyone could get in on the fun with charades, Piction ary or Who Am I? (that game where you write a famous person's name on a card and stick to someone's forehead and they have to try and guess who they are.)

Warm Up There can be a little chill in the air at night, even with a fire going. Bring out flannel throws and hoodies for everyone to bundle up with. Warm drinks in thermoses will be a welcome treat; everyone can enjoy hot cocoa or mulled apple cider while the adults sip hot toddies, coffee or chai.

Backyard games are fun all year long. Washer toss, bad minton, giant Jenga, croquet, cornhole, ladder toss, bocce… the options are endless! If you want to take the fun to another level, consider setting up tournaments with carnival prizes.

Swap 'em out for something more indulgent. Chocolate chip cookies, Rice Krispie treats, Stroopwafels, flat pretzel crisps, donuts, brownie crisps... the possibilities are pretty much endless! There's nothing closer to perfection than a classic S'more. Picture it: a gooey campfire-toasted marshmallow, sandwiched together with a Hershey bar between two graham crackers. It's warm, decadent and wonderfully easy to make. But we're big believers that there's nothing so close to perfection that it can't be improved upon, and S'mores are no excep tion. A little creative flair can take this campfire treat from "wonderful" to "WOW!" with almost no effort. 103TOPS Louisville.com | September 2022

CHANGE TODAY, CHANGE TOMORROW by Dawn Anderson | courtesy photos September 2022 | TOPS LOUISVILLE108

Featured on an episode of The Daily Show with Trevor Noah during Black History Month this year, Change Today, Change Tomorrow (CTCT) is a local nonprofit receiving national attention for its efforts in providing for Louisville’s most marginalized communities. On September 15, Change Today, Change Tomorrow will join other nonprofits across Kentuckiana for the Community Foundation of Louisville’s annual Give for Good Louisville fundraising campaign. The online giving day demonstrates the tremendous impact of small contributions, raises awareness about participating organizations, and features local events to support the causes our community cares about “Changemost.Today, Change Tomorrow provides barrier-free and direct services that are deeply impactful to Black and underserved communities,” says Public Relations and Event Coordinator Ali Gautier. Founder and Executive Director Taylor Ryan first envisioned opening a school in the West End. Quickly realizing the first order of business would be to fill the significant gaps in the basic needs of area children and their families, she launched Change Today, Change Tomorrow in September 2019. Along with a full slate of Black women leaders, Ryan developed the organization to provide “access to resources, education, and community engagement.”

According to Gautier, Change Today, Change Tomorrow started with “one individual (Taylor Ryan) seeing a direct, immediate need from a friend on Facebook. And that’s really how all of us came to the organization.” Following her 2015 graduation from Centre College, Danville, Kentucky, native Ali Gautier moved to Louisville for two terms of Americorps service. She is an activist, comedian, and performing artist with a YouTube channel, “Could Be Worse,” and podcast, “Funny Fat Friend.”

Born and raised in Paducah, Kentucky, Taylor Ryan has a BA in Communications from the University of Louisville and two Master’s degrees from Marshall University. A community volunteer and organizer since childhood, Ryan sought more direct access to programs and services for Louisville communities. Focusing on the three pillars of food justice, educational services, and public health initiatives, CTCT has served well over 100,000 residents and delivered more than $5 million in groceries locally.

“Give for Good Louisville is significant because the services we provide come from direct monetary and in-kind contributions and support in the community,” says Gautier. “Give for Good is so community-focused, harvesting from our own community and family members competing in an all-day party. Our Give For Good theme this year is ‘History in the Baking’ and we are partnering with local bakeries to highlight their specialty dishes and bring awareness to our campaign.” Social Media Manager Skylar Davis and the rest of the young staff are heavily promoting the campaign in this TikTok/Instagram era. CTCT will post multiple social media blasts leading to the September 15th event. There will be giveaways for match minutes and donor spotlights online. Stay tuned for more information on this year’s Give for Good community party at CTCT’s new offices.

Recently, Gautier has been involved with the Highlands relocation of Pocket Change (CTCT’s Black Business Empowerment Hub and retail collective) and a successful Open House and Housewarming Party for CTCT’s new headquarters at 902 South 15th Street. Other recent CTCT events include the 2nd Annual Summer Lovin Drag Show for houseless outreach and the Healthy Change Vegan Cook-Off. But this month, Gautier focuses on CTCT’s September 15 Give for Good online fundraising campaign.

Luminary Comity has partnered with the NAACP Louisville Youth Council as a mentor for the local ACT-SO competition. Every year, high school students across the country sharpen their skills through the Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics (ACT-SO) Achievement Program. Participants work with communitybased volunteers to develop projects and performances in business and the culinary, performing, and visual arts. Students compete for scholarships and other rewards in local and national competitions. Louisville’s gold medalist received a silver medal at the national level.

Recently, Luminary partnered with Project Shine to help twelve young people write and produce a play. They opened for the Shakespeare Festival in Central Park’s June 19, 2022, performance of Richard III. Luminary Comity is also producing family-friendly drag shows. The “Glitter Fever Experience” is a highly entertaining variety show centered on acceptance, representation, and visibility. According to Camp, “Luminary is a multi-faceted, organized network of adult and youth activists who seek to make changes in the community and support those who want to be involved in the arts.” While the global pandemic has delayed Luminary’s full-scale launch as a theater company, it also provided time to reevaluate and put plans together. In June 2021, Luminary released its articles of incorporation and dedicated itself to grant-writing and marketing efforts. Since August 2021, Luminary Comity has sought out young playwrights to develop their work in future productions. The dream lives on through networking, partnering with youth and arts organizations.

Originally envisioned as a dinner theatre, Luminary Comity has expanded its reach beyond and within the arts to include activism, education, and community partnerships.

“Luminary seeks to entertain and educate while also helping the community. Providing activities, support, and resources for youth and young adults who want to express their creative talents.” Board President and Artistic Director Stephon Camp has combined his lifelong ambition to own a theater company with his father’s dream of owning a restaurant. Although Luminary has drawn back some plans due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the ultimate vision of a full-scale dinner theatre remains. Stephon Camp spent much of his youth involved with local theater programs such as Walden, Stage One, Blue Apple Players, and Sacred Heart School for the Arts. He is a product of Louisville Central Community Center (LCCC), which motivated him to give back to the community. Eventually, Camp realized he was better suited to working behind the scenes than as a performer. He worked in entertainment at 4th Street Live for nine years and pursued higher education at Indiana University Southeast During(IUS). his sophomore year at IUS, Camp began developing a for-profit company and got involved in nonprofit work. As a member of the LGBTQ+ organization at IUS and with the help of local partners and a partner out of Washington DC, Camp was instrumental in creating an on-campus health and resource center. His work in this area has continued since his May 2020 graduation with Luminary’s Stephon Youth Health & Resource Collective (SYHRC). “SYHRC brings awareness to youth issues in the community, such as sexual health, homophobia, ageism, and racism, while assisting high school and college student activists with support services.”

“As a recent college graduate myself, I help high school and college students with financial aid, even with something as simple as keeping track of names of people they’ve spoken with and holding people responsible throughout the process,” says Camp. “Youth are the future of tomorrow. We shouldn’t push them to the side. We should listen to them. The things they say speak volumes. I educate using my personal experiences.”

On September 15, the organization will participate in the Community Foundation of Louisville’s annual Give for Good campaign for the first time. Donate and fundraise for Luminary Comity at

As for the future of Luminary Comity, the nonprofit organization seeks to provide a different type of theater, combining video with live performance. Luminary will remain a traveling theater but ultimately hopes to have a permanent multipurpose space for creativity. The current focus is on “bringing in funds to stabilize and build partnerships and networks, such as the Luminary-sponsored Hope Boyz podcast, the Kentuckiana AIDS Alliance (KAA), and Louisville ACT-SO scholarships. “We want to involve creative youth across Kentuckiana, keeping them busy and moving in a positive direction.”

“Global Game Changers aims to be a catalyst for change in the hearts of young students,” said GGC co-founder and board chair Jan Helson. “Thanks to an AmeriCorps 9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance grant, we developed THE 9/11 LESSON: Remembering the Real-Life Superheroes!, a free elementary curriculum to help elementary-age students by Heather French Henry | courtesy photos

One group that has created a new direction of educational engagement is Global Game Changers (GGC), a leading provider of evidence-based leadership curricula. Their Student Empowerment Program uses service-learning as a vehicle to build life skills in students and promote deeper learning experiences.

Most adults remember exactly where they were on September 11, 2001.

Just as previous generations recall stories of the moments surrounding the news of the assassination of JFK or the bombing of Pearl Harbor, these are the moments that impact our lives. Unfortunately, as in the past, these moments often lose their relevancy for newer generations who were born after these events. This makes it extremely important to create a new strategy about how to engage and teach younger children about the events of 9/11 and how to talk about the sacrifice and service of our first responders and military.

Remembering 9/11 Through Engagement & Education

Educating younger generations about sacrifice and service can be a daunting task. When teaching about the events of war or military actions, teachers and parents alike have struggled with what is appropriate for young children. “This lesson provides teachers and parents resources to address a difficult subject matter and build a sense of patriotism in their children,” says Helson.

GGC has even created an activity called The 9/11 Step Challenge to honor the heroes of September 11, 2001. This activity promotes a physical exercise that can engage one person or the entire family and classroom to take 2071 steps, which is equivalent to the number of steps in the World Trade Center, to remember those lives lost during 9/11.

KENTUCKY WRITER NAMED THE 24TH U.S. POET LAUREATE BY AMANDA HARPER PHOTOS BY LUCAS MARQUARDT & SHAWN MILLER, LIBRARY OF CONGRESS LimónAda 115TOPS Louisville.com | September 2022

When Kentucky-based poet Ada Limón was asked to participate in a Zoom call on June 1st, she had no idea what to expect. She was surprised to learn that she was on the line with Carla Hayden, the Librarian of Congress. She was – ironically, perhaps – rendered speechless when she learned that the call was to invite her to serve as the 24th Poet Laureate of the United States.

"Kentucky for me has become such a beautiful home; it's allowed me to have a little more space and time to write," Limón explained. "But it's also really allowed me a very generous writing community that I get to surround myself with and be inspired by all the time."

September 2022 | TOPS LOUISVILLE116

Limón was born in Sonoma, California in 1976. She fell in love with "One Art" by Elizabeth Bishop at 15, and thus with poetry. Limón’s mother is a painter – her mom actually painted every cover of Limón's poetry books so far – and she grew up in a home environment that nurtured her passion for the arts. Limón's career nearly took a very different path artistically. She majored in theatre at the University of Washington and planned to continue with theatre in her graduate studies at NYU. A poetry professor – National Book Award winner Colleen J. McElroy – pulled her aside and suggested she focus on poetry instead. While she moved into marketing upon graduation, she eventually transitioned into the life of a full-time writer. Limón moved to Lexington, Kentucky a decade ago with her now-husband, who works in the thoroughbred industry. She fell in love first with the landscape of the Bluegrass, then with the arts scene. "[Kentucky] has a wonderful literary community, and a literary legacy… there are so many great writers that have come from Kentucky, and that live in Kentucky now. And I think it's so important to remember that writing doesn't just happen on, you know, the two coasts," she said in an interview with WKMS. At least two other Kentuckians have served as the US Poet Laureate; Allen Tate (born in Winchester, Ky) and Robert Penn Warren (born in Guthrie, Ky).

"Ada Limón is a poet who connects," Hayden said. "Her accessible, engaging poems ground us in where we are and who we share our world with. They speak of intimate truths, of the beauty and heartbreak that is living, in ways that help us move forward."

The position has existed since 1937. Many of our nation's most important, gifted and forward-thinking poets have been bestowed this prestigious title of Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress (it wasn't until 1985 that the title became Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry).

"What an incredible honor to be named the 24th Poet Laureate of the United States,” Limón said in a statement.

“Again and again, I have been witness to poetry's immense power to reconnect us to the world, to allow us to heal, to love, to grieve, to remind us of the full spectrum of human emotion.”

To listen to The Slowdown, visit slowdownshow.org or find it wherever you listen to your podcasts!

One way she hopes to achieve that goal is to get people thinking about poetry in public spaces. Nature is a recurring element in her own work (one of her books for Scribd Originals is titled Shelter: A Love Letter to Trees); she would love to have poetry linked to parks, urban green areas or unexpected spaces for free, where anyone can access it –or, perhaps more accurately, encounter and interact with poetry without actively seeking it. She envisions people going for a leisurely walk and experiencing poetry the way they might take in the trees, grass and flowers.

Limón also wants to bring awareness to the global legacy of our nation’s literature and poetry. She points out that American poetry comes from many different sources and many different voices – ones often left out of the “literary Onecanon.”ofthose varied voices making up our shared literary legacy is hers. Her six poetry collections have won numerous literary awards. She is the recipient of fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the New York Foundation for the Arts, the Provincetown Fine Arts Work Center and the Kentucky Foundation for Women. She serves on the faculty of Queens University of Charlotte's Low Residency MFA Limónprogram.hasalready been working to make poetry more democratized and accessible through modern media. She currently hosts The Slowdown, a podcast series from American Public Media in partnership with The Poetry Foundation, which was launched as a part of Tracy K. Smith's poet laureateship. The episodes feature a poem and a moment of reflection each workday, which offers its listeners "a different way to see the world – through poetry."

Limón was surprised, thrilled and honored by the announcement – so much so that she admits she floundered for words at the time. She joked, “We’re supposed to, you know, have a way with words.” Limón later summed up her “enormous gratitude” in a statement, saying, "This recognition belongs to the teachers, poets, librarians and ancestors from all over the world that have been lifting up poetry for years. I am humbled by this opportunity to work in the service of poetry and to amplify poetry's ability to restore our humanity and our relationship to the world around us."

Limón's one-year term as the Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry begins September 29th, and the position comes with an optional one-year renewal. Her duties will begin with a reading of her work in the Library of Congress Coolidge Auditorium. While the job is officially headquartered in Washington, DC, laureates are only required to be there for a few obligations. That means Limón will carry out her term right here in Kentucky, where she finds the peace and relaxation she finds necessary to write – though the announcement of her appointment may mean a little less Whatquiet.areher duties, exactly, and what is a poet laureate?

Limón's most recent book, The Hurting Kind, was published as part of a three-book deal with Milkweed Editions. The second book, Beast: An Anthology of Animal Poems, will be released in 2024 and will feature works by major poets of the last century. The third will be a volume of New & Selected Poems, which will be published in 2025. And there’s certainly more on the horizon for this talented poet.

For Limón, a key goal of her term is to help everyone understand that poetry isn't something that exists only in an academic space. Speaking again to WKMS, she said, "I would want to promote poetry as a tool to help us reclaim our humanity, to help us remember who we are, and to help us reclaim our, you know, for the lack of a better word, soul. And then I would also really like to, for us to recognize that poetry can help us repair our relationship to the natural world, to remember that we're connected, because I think so many people have felt so isolated for so long."

The Poet Laureate "seeks to raise the national consciousness to a greater appreciation of the reading and writing of poetry," according to the Library of Congress. How each laureate interprets this mission varies, but many in recent years have started large dedicated poetry projects to help more people discover an appreciation for the art form.
