Letter from the publisher
dear tops reader, You and I are living through unprecedented and extraordinary times. From all of us at TOPS, our hearts go out to everyone whose health, business, or jobs have been impacted. We designed this month’s unique cover to reflect the very best of Kentucky and our local community. In these uncertain times, it’s inspiring to hear and witness so many stories of service above self. The worst of times brings out the best in so many people. This special edition is made possible by the many wonderful businesses you see featured inside. Like every publisher in America, designing, printing, and distributing a magazine in these uncertain times is very economically challenging. Please thank these advertisers for making this issue and future issues possible. Local businesses like TOPS need your support now more than ever. The April issue is always one of the most anticipated of the year featuring our beloved Derby, Gala events, and Spring Fashion. The TOPS staff scrambled to rework our content to bring you a balance of the many features you love about TOPS while serving as a community resource during this time. Your favorite shops and restaurants will re-open. Events will happen. Our lives will get back to normal, although they may never be quite the same. Staying well is important both mentally and physically, and so, we felt it essential to keep a sense of normalcy and bring you a ray of sunshine. We hope this issue helps you focus on the things in life that are still positive in these challenging days. Our upcoming May issue will proudly feature “Hometown Heroes” and bring you stories about the many ways people have gone above and beyond to help us all. We can’t wait to share those with you. We also plan to feature Real Estate Rockstars and Support Local businesses.
For those of you spending more time at home these days, we invite you to subscribe to our magazine for the convenience of receiving TOPS directly to your mailbox for an extraordinary 50% OFF special deal. You get a 1-year subscription for just $9! To get started, go to: TOPSLouisville.com/subscriptions and enter TeamKY as the promo code at checkout. As always, find us on our social media and website. Wherever you are, TOPS is always just a click away. We are here for you, and we thank you for letting us be a part of your lives.

Reeling In The Years With the Dermatological Dream Team at the Skin Group (502) 583-6647 • SKINGROUP.ORG “I am just so proud of these ladies,” Lisa Zax says of her dynamic team at the Skin Group. Victoria Yatsuknenko (Faulconer), Shannon England, and Janelle Willoughby bring not just their vast expertise in the medical artistry of techniques like Botox, TempSure, and Dermal Fillers, but also real compassion for their patients. “We encourage everyone we see to be their own best advocate,” says Victoria. Shannon adds, “These procedures are all absolutely elective, and we appreciate that it’s no small decision. We’re here to boost your confidence and help you to look like yourself. There’s almost always a way to fix the things you might not like, and we believe in a personalized, customized approach.” The Skin Group is as renowned for their fabulous results as they are for their outstanding professionalism. Generations of men and women consult with the providers about their concerns, and then the team confers to determine the best course of action to achieve the results desired. “I really enjoy consulting first time patients,” says Janelle, “because I love starting this journey with them and being able to present them with fantastic options to hold back and turn back time in natural looking ways. I’m often the first introduction they have to the practice as a whole, and I get excited to share all that our team can accomplish both medically and cosmetically. “The thing that I would most like to communicate is that what we do here is not about vanity,” Victoria says. “It’s about helping you to be happy in your own skin.” TOPS LOUISVILLE | April 2020 37

Brandon & Lexie
Faith connects couple, leads to ‘I do.” BY TAYLOR RILEY • PHOTOS BY SAMANTHA MOORE PHOTOGRAPHY
S
ome say being on the same page when it comes to faith is one of the most important aspects of a happy and healthy marriage. When it comes to Louisville couple Brandon and Lexie Head, faith brought them together for the first time and was a driving force of their relationship all the way to the altar. The couple met via an online dating website for those of the Catholic faith, Catholic Match--well, technically they met a little later on Facebook because Lexie says she didn’t respond to Brandon’s message on the match site. Brandon sent Lexie a friend request on the social media platform, and when she recognized his photo, “intuition and fate told me to accept the request,” she says. At that time, Brandon, a software engineer, lived in Dayton, Ohio, so Lexie, a wealth management advisor, thought a three-hour drive would be ridiculous for a date. But, Brandon insisted, and after a month of messaging, the two met in Louisville for their first date. The couple dated long distance between Louisville and Dayton until June 2018 while on a family vacation to Seaside, Florida, Brandon planned the surprise of a lifetime. Toward the end of the week, Lexie asked Brandon if they could take an early morning walk on the beach, and when the couple got to a pavilion that led down to the beach, it was empty. Brandon asked if Lexie would like to get a photo, and he finally caught someone to take the photo. Little did she know that he asked the gentleman to “just keep snapping photos when I get down on one knee,” she says. Also a surprise: The
stranger was an amateur photographer who perfectly captured the moment. Fast forward to October 2019, the couple who now both live in Louisville, decided to wed at Holy Trinity, their parish. “It was important to us to get married somewhere that was meaningful to our relationship,” Lexie says. They knew they wanted a day that was “unique, but also timeless,” she says. “We knew a traditional evening wedding wouldn’t be true to our personalities or the guest list, which mostly consisted of family.” So, the couple had a morning wedding ceremony at 11 a.m. with a brunch reception at the Louisville Boat Club after, which allowed Lexie’s guests from Owensboro, Kentucky, and Brandon’s guests from Dayton to travel to and from within the same day. The brunch had traditional fare; during the cocktail hour, guests enjoyed yogurt parfaits and French toast dippers. For the meal, the couple served chicken and waffles, a chef-prepared custom omelet station, and a biscuit bar. For dessert, the reception had a selection of donuts from Nord’s Bakery, the couple’s favorite donut spot. Guests also enjoyed mimosas, Bloody Marys, and a selection of craft beer. Lexie and Brandon had custom drink stirrers and cocktail napkins made with a custom “H” that the couple incorporated in several other details in the ceremony program. The bar also included a drawing of their dog, Charlie, so that “he could be a part of our day even though he couldn’t be at the ceremony or reception,” she says.

T
here were many moments that Lexie looks back on as being integral parts of the couple’s big day. One of those was a surprise for her “rock” Brandon. Lexie says Brandon always told her he’d love to own a “weekend” car, so the morning of the wedding, she gave him a leather keychain embossed with “to get us where we’re going” along with their wedding date. The couple had a history of dating long distance, and when they traveled home from seeing each other, they got into the habit of telling the other “let me know when you get where you’re going,” Lexie explains. On the day of the wedding, Brandon went out to the front of the boat club, thinking he was going to see her for their first look, but instead there was a “weekend” roadster waiting for him. “His reaction was priceless,” she says. Other memorable moments of the wedding included the “ring bearer,” who was only two-yearsold holding a sippy cup down the aisle, and the groom learning a line dance in time for the reception. The couple paid tribute to their grandparents who passed away, which included Lexie’s rosary she carried down the aisle that was made by her paternal grandmother. “It was so life-giving to be surrounded by the people that will be there long after the wedding day to pray for us and encourage us throughout the journey of marriage in the years to come,” Lexie says about the couple’s beautiful day.

he boarding facility is just a short drive in a utility vehicle on a wooded, unpaved path. There are three barns on the property, an indoor covered training ring, and secure tack rooms for the 22 boarded horses. During late autumn and winter, the horses enjoy paddock daylight, and at night, they stay warm in a matted stall. In the spring, the animals stay in daytime stalls cooled by fans, while spending evenings outside. Gregory employs co-managers Christine Robey and Mark Cotler for 24/7 on-site care and operation of the farm.

BACK TO NATURE Behr’s 2020 Color of the Year, Back to Nature (S340-4), is a revitalizing hue that brings the outdoors in. Used in any room that has abundant natural light or stunning views of nature, this yellowy green will pick up on Mother Earth’s beauty. Its warmth brings an energizing, rejeuvenating quality. Bailey Pendant HOME DEPOT
As this photo illustrates, Back to Nature works beautifully in rooms where you can step right out into the great outdoors, such as entryways. This green also hearkens to herbs and leafy greenery, which makes it perfect for dining rooms and kitchen. This botanical paint easily pairs with other natural elements. Wood, leather, wool and stone will all fit perfectly. And of course, all your plant babies will all shine against this green! Behr’s Secret Meadow (S (S360-6) is a deeper version that works to add dimension: try it inside built-ins to create visual depth. A white trim would fight with Back to Nature’s bright quality. Instead, set it off with Graphic Charcoal (N (N500-6), a soft, refined neutral.

“We are a home away from home for workers,” said Sherry Stanley, executive director of the Backside Learning Center. She has a background in the Peace Corps in Central America and in working with international populations in the U.S., primarily Spanish-speaking people.

workers’ spouses and children. “For the past five years we have had a growing and robust comprehensive program for youth ages 2 to 18,” Stanley said. Programs include after-school homework help, social and emotional development support, community excursions promoting access to the arts and the outdoors, child development, and other support services. “The Backside Learning Center is one of the only educational and resource centers of its kind at racetracks nationwide,” Stanley said. “Backside workers and their families are the backbone of the racing industry and essential to Louisville and Kentucky’s community and economy.” More than 1,000 people live and work on the backside, including trainers’ assistants, grooms, exercise riders and
hot walkers. They take care of around 1,300 horses that live and race at Churchill Downs. BLC serves 600 backside employees each year with their education and social programs, professional and civic support, communication skills and help with technology, transportation and paperwork. English language classes take place in the form of individual tutoring, six-week courses and a “weekly conversation partner” program. BLC also offers health and nutrition classes, field trips and summer youth programs. Kids get homework assistance, especially with reading and math, and there are leadership development opportunities for children of all ages.

“Most are immigrants from Latin America and Spanish is their native language,” Stanley said of the backside workers, adding that the majority of their children were born in the United States. “It is a diverse and lively community that is part of the fabric of Louisville.” In addition to the Backside Learning Center on the backside of Churchill Downs, the satellite location at Beechmont Baptist Church provides English classes to backside workers and their spouses, along with after-school programming for their children.

Volunteer opportunities abound at the organization. Examples include being a conversation partner, English instructor or tutor for adults or youth, and you don’t need to know Spanish to help out. “We also accept new or gently used bicycles for our students and backside workers,” Stanley said. Also, if you or your organization would like to “adopt a classroom” or one of the Backside Learning Center’s specific programs, you can gather school supplies or other donations listed on their wish list, or take part in group volunteer projects. “We would love to introduce everyone to the people who work 365 days a year to care for the horses and who are the heart and soul and backbone of this industry,” Stanley said. “We are sure that once you become aware of the Backside, you will be moved to become a part of our community.”

CAROLYN PARKER VERHOEFF [1875-1975]
Developing a trusted relationship
Across the country there is a growing movement to recognize noteworthy women and their historical contributions through public monuments. Unfortunately, less than 7% of the 5,193 monuments in the United States presently recognize women. We are about to change that statistic with the “Breaking the Bronze Ceiling” initiative. Each month TOPS will feature a Kentucky woman who impacted the Women’s Rights Movement. For more information visit breakingthebronzeceiling.com.

C
arolyn Parker Verhoeff was born in Louisville on August 12, 1875 to German immigrant Herman Verhoeff II and Kentucky native Mary J. Parker. Her grandfather Herman Verhoeff served in the Royal Prussian Army during the Napoleonic wars. Carloyn’s father ran a successful grain elevator operation and was a two-time city councilman. Carolyn was one of six children, two of whom died in infancy. She was particularly close to an older sister, Mary. Carolyn and Mary attended Ellen Churchill Semple School for girls. Carolyn then followed Mary to Vassar, graduating in 1897. Her post-graduate studies began at Radcliffe College and continued with the progressive kindergarten pedagogy program of Patty Smith Hill in Louisville. Carolyn taught kindergarten until 1903 when it was added into Louisville’s public school system. During her time in the field of education, Carolyn was well-travelled and possessed of a continually active and curious mind. Privileged with family wealth and the means to pursue her own interests, Carolyn turned her attention to causes dearest to her heart, including the humane treatment of animals. She had been an ethical vegetarian since the age of 7. Beginning in 1907, Carolyn wrote and had published three children’s books: All About Johnnie Jones, Four Little Fosters, and Love Me, Love My Dog. Around this same time, she paid a visit to the old city dog pound, where she found the conditions abhorrent. But she also understood that she must continue in the cause of education and women’s rights to gain the political capital necessary to make change.

In 1963, the Carolyn Verhoeff Animal Care Center was dedicated at the new Medical-Dental Research Building.
As did many of her well-to-do female contemporaries in Louisville, Carolyn held several civic and social memberships. She was a member of the College Club, an organization of female college graduates whose mission was to grant scholarships to high school girls with academic promise, improve high school teacher salaries, and advocate for women’s dormitories on coed campuses. Carolyn was also involved with settlement houses providing for the city’s poor and immigrant neighborhoods. In 1915, she was Information Committee Chair of the Louisville Public Library,
Carolyn and her sister Mary, an accomplished geographer and also a suffragist, never married and lived nearly their entire lives together at 731 S 2nd St., the family home their father had built in 1879. After Mary passed in 1962 and as Carolyn’s eyesight began to fail, friends would visit to read aloud letters from her niece. Margaret was the daughter of Carolyn and Mary’s older brother Frederick Verhoeff, the nationally renowned ophthalmologist, pathologist, and Harvard professor. Carolyn Parker Verhoeff lived to the age of 99. According to her obituary, expressions of sympathy were made to the Humane Society or the University of Louisville School of Medicine, to which her body was donated.
