MEET OUR 1st JUDGE OF THE WEEK THORA BROWN, Ottawa, ON. CANADA
1) Home city? Toronto (moved to Ottawa in 1967) 2) Breed or Breed’s you have bred? Bulldogs, Irish Setters, English Cocker Spaniels, American Cocker Spaniels 3) Years you have been Judging? Since 1983 (30 years) 4) Licensed for or, on Permit for? All breeds 5) Judged in what Countries? Canada, United States, Argentina (3), Australia (4), Bermuda, Brazil (3), Chile (3), China, Colombia (3), Finland, France, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Ireland, Japan (2), South Korea (2), Mexico (4), Peru (4), Philippines, Portugal, South Africa (2), Uruguay, Venezuela (2) 6) All time favourite assignment? Each show is special in its own way, from a breed specialty to a foreign assignment to a highly renowned show. What makes each one stand out are the people you meet, new and old friends. 7) Favourite dog or dogs Judged from the past? I have had the pleasure of judging some of the top winners at the height of their careers, and also some lovely puppies who I have watched grow into wonderful adults. Irish Setters around the world, beautiful Bernese Mountain Dogs on 3 continents, Cockers in all colours, Afghans & Salukis that make me gasp, Boxers & Dobe’s that are all strength, Pomeranians, Maltese, Pekingese all beauty, I have had so many great dogs shown to me. 8) Pet Peeve’s in your ring? Exhibitors who insist on racing, the over use/misuse of bait 9) How many shows a year do you Judge in Canada? 4 or 5 weekends, fewer than in past years as more clubs are using permit judges to economize. 10) How many foreign assignments do you accept each year? We have our full slate of 8 American shows and then 4 – 6 off continent. Have passport, will travel. 11) Favourite way to relax? Reading, cooking 12) How do you occupy your time in travel? Reading, crosswords, sleeping 13) Your thoughts on limit shows? They have their place. They were meant to assist clubs in remote areas but have spread to the entire country. In some parts of Canada they have been a saving grace, in other places they have overrun the show scene. 14) What do you think is the biggest problem facing our Sport? Apathy and Elitism. THANK YOU THORA BROWN WELCOME TO TopDogWeekly!

A hard question – there are several who can make me smile just thinking about them and what I learned from them. 8) Pet Peeve’s in your ring? Exhibitors racing, overuse/misuse of bait, the last dog of the day – exhibitor asks “Where would you like me to go?” 9) How many shows a year do you Judge in Canada? 4 or 5, fewer than in past years as more clubs are using permit judges to economize. 10) How many foreign assignments do you accept each year? We have our full slate of 8 American shows and then 4 – 6 off continent. 11) Favourite way to relax? Reading, photography 12) How do you occupy your time in travel? Reading, crosswords, sleeping 13) Your thoughts on limit shows? They have their place. They were meant to assist clubs in remote areas.
