Tame Your Curly MANE!

Curly hair can be a real challenge. True story.

I

n terms of care, attention and even styling curly hair offers a variety of styles that can transform you in minutes. Read on and discover some useful quick tips to tame your curly hair. First of all, you must understand that your curls are true gift and that 90% of girls with straight hair have been at least once in their life envious of your curls. Women with straight manes often struggle to get the volume and curls that your curls naturally posses. On the other hand, our Florida humidity can be a nightmare! However, don’t let your curly mane-be-the-blame! Here are some tips to help you tame your curls.

TIPS:

Not every hair stylist knows how to cut curly hair. It must be cut while it is still wet, to highlight its natural form. Layered haircuts are recommended, but not for short hair (think frizzy mop). Curly hair is more fragile than straight hair, so you should avoid the hairdryer as much as possible. In6

stead, let it dry naturally. If you don’t have time, always use a diffuser. If you’re thinking of enhancing your natural curls, choose strands of 2-3 cm of hair and roll them until they turn into small balls and pull them close to the root (also know as bantu knots). Let the hair dry completely and then release it, slightly shaking the head to release the curls. Easily comb your hair when you’re out of the shower, with a wide-tooth comb. Let it dry naturally and never comb it when completely dry. Use your fingers to style it. Tuck away your hairbrushes, and invest in a quality comb instead. Use quality products dedicated to curly hair. A quality product can save your hair and give you ease of styling and is truly worth the investment. Use an

anti-frizz serum, or one of my favorites Coconut & Hibiscus Curling Soufflé by Shea Moisture (Target or Walgreens). Use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner, because the lack of moisture is the biggest problem of a curly hair. Use a strong moisturizing mask once a month. To highlight even more of the curls, dye some strands of hair in a lighter color, especially those that frame your face. They will also reveal your features. If you’re looking for a natural products, check out Shea Moisture’s new Hair Color System. What you eat also plays an important role in the appearance of your hair. In the case of curly hair, one problem is dryness, so try to include as many healthy proteins as possible in your daily diet. Follow these tips and you will surely discover how to tame your curly.

Urban Style Files: Interview with

Joy J

Urban model Joy J took time out of her busy schedule to speak with Urban SBG on Life, Beauty and Hair.

W

hat else would you be if you weren’t a fashion model? Well I am currently in the nursing field which is my true calling. I love helping people who are in need of medical attention. I only model part time for the extra money. It’s a lot of fun I enjoy the many looks I get to have and how beautiful I can become when I am all dolled up lol. What’s your definition of happiness? Happiness to me means living a life full of smiles, laughter, regardless of what’s going on your still positive. Happiness is something that come 10

from within, you can’t buy happiness. I surround myself with positive energy and people who love me and what I am about. Happiness is loving yourself inside and out knowing that you have a purpose in life in my opinion is part of happiness. What do you do when you are not in front of the camera? When I am not at work, doing shoots or doing air I am at home with the family. I don’t do much outside of that. I am so big on staying home with my family, I look forward to the days where I can just do nothing (which isn’t often)

Urban Style & Beauty Guide | August 2013

Who is your inspiration/role model? I don’t really have a role model but I am a fan of Miss Tyra, she is all about helping girls find inner beauty and being comfortable with being who you are.You don’t have to be pencil thin to be a model, just be you. Who does your hair, would you recommend them? I do my own hair, for just about every shoot I have done I did my own hair. I am very tender headed and picky with my hair. I had a lady try to do it for a shoot once and she had no clue what she was

doing. she didn’t get it styled how the photographer wanted so I had to do it. I have many talents up my sleeve. I do my own Braids, Bantu Knots, Curls, Twist, Flat Iron, Weaves and Quick Wigs. How often do you cut/trim your hair? I try to cut my hair every couple months. Far as washing....I HATE IT...... My hair is so thick and curly (which I blame my dad for) I love my hair though I can do types of stuff to it. The products I use are a bit home made but they work for me while I cut and trim my hair. What are your Holy Grail and staple products? The products I use are organics Hair mayo Organics leave in conditiner. I also make my own stuff, mixture is African Shea Butter and extra Virgin Olive Oil which get mixed together and I apply

“Yes I do love my weaves but African American women should embrace their natural hair”

that to my hair before every style I do (weaves, braids, Bantu knots, corn rolls) What do you love most about your natural hair? The thing I love most about my hair is that I can rock my natural curl or blow it out and it will look beautiful ether way. Yes I do love my weaves but African American woman should embrace their hair, it’s lots of stuff you can do to it. I don’ do and have never had a perm or any other chemical in my hair. What is your “go to” style (share a picture of it, if you have one!)? My go to style.......dang I have so many Short weave, Bantu knots (which create a tighter curl) a bun. www.urbansbg.com

Makeup 101: Finding your perfect match

F

inding a make up that will suit your color is the first step in achieving a great look. No matter how expensive your products are, if these won’t suit your skin type and color, everything will go into junk. When trying out if beauty products will work for you, always buy the small one first. If they have samples then the better. You need to try it first because advertisements will not always work for your skin. After trying the products and you see that it’s working for you, that’s the time that you can splurge on your beauty regimen. Finding the right make up products is crucial. When we use make up, rememebr that your aim is to enhance your face, not to hide them. Look for one facial feature that you want to flaunt. Is it your almond eyes or your high cheek bones. Or maybe your well defined lips. You can choose anything, but not all. You will look like a Christmas tree with overflowing decorations. So go for one feature at a time. Always invest in a good foundation and powder. These are the products that will served as your base so it

should be really good. For women with dark complexion, look for a yellow base foundation. Your foundation should serve as your second skin. Meaning, it should look natural. M.A.C. has a lot of shades that is perfect for every skin

tone. When testing it, make sure that you see it under natural light. Go to the beauty counter and try out the colors. Do not buy immediately. Walk around the mall and see if it feels cakey or if it feels heavy on your skin. It should blend perfectly with your skin as if you are not really wearing anything. Regarding blush on, women with dark skin color find it difficult to find the perfect blush. It’s because too pale or too dark color will be difficult to refelct on their skin. One of the well known blush in the world is Nars in Orgasm. It is said to be the universal blush as it compliments every skin tone. It is a peachy pink color with gold shimmer that serves as a highlighter. One good alternative to a blusher is a bronzer. Bronzers look fabulous on darker complexion. For your lips, go for a shade that is closer to your complexion as well. Deep cherry, burgundy, coral and brick red are some of your best shades. You can try Nars in Jungle Red for that deep red color or Revlon Colorburst Lip Butter In Peach Parfait for a more natural look. If you really want to play around with colors, then you can do it with your eyes. Metallic eye shadows look fantastic with darker women. The shimmer of the eyeshadow totally compliments their color. You can mix anything with gold and you will always look gorgeous! 13 www.urbansbg.com

Hybrid Porsche 918 Spyder

Hybrid drive brings advantages in terms of driving dynamics

A

key message of the 918 Spyder is that the hybrid drive from Porsche is a plus for no-compromise driving dynamics. Drivers can experience this thanks to the unique all-wheel drive concept with a combination of combustion engine and electric motor on the rear axle and the second electric motor on the front axle. It is based on knowledge gained by Porsche during motor races with the successful 911 GT3 R Hybrid. Due to the additional, individually controllable front drive, new driving strategies for extremely high, safe cornering speeds can be implemented, especially for bends. Furthermore, the advanced “boost” strategy manages the energy of the electric drive so intelligently that, for every sprint with maximum acceleration, the full power of the 918 Spyder can be tapped into by simply pressing the accelerator down fully. In short, the 918 Spyder allows even drivers without motorsport training to experience the potential of advanced longitudinal and transverse dynamics. The Porsche 918 Spyder also has the potential to break many records. The current lap time for the North Loop of the Nürburgring is 7:14 minutes. This time was achieved in the presence of international journalists during test drives in September 2012 – more than a year before start of production. The 918 Spyder prototype was therefore approximately 20 seconds quicker than the Porsche Carrera GT. More test drives on the Nürburgring North Loop will follow. An even more important factor is that the 918 Spyder surpasses previous models and competitors by far in its efficiency as well. As a plug-in hybrid vehicle, it systematically combines the dynamic performance of a racing machine with low fuel consumption. To sum it up: maximum driving fun with minimal fuel consumption. 14

10 Ways to stay Active. By: The American Heart Association

“Building physical activity back into our daily lives is one of the great public health challenges of this century,”

s

aid Russell Pate, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Exercise at the University of South Carolina. “Our bodies were designed to be physically active, and they don’t do well with long-term exposure to sedentary living. Lack of physical activity is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease.”

Here are some of Dr. Pate’s tips for getting active:

1. Get out the leash and walk your dog. It’s a great activity for both man and man’s best friend. Your heart — and your pooch — will thank you! 2. Take your child for a brisk walk. It’s an excellent way to get some one-on-one time (or one-on-three, depending on the size of your brood.) Spice up your routine by exploring new neighborhoods or turning your walk into a scavenger hunt. 3. Mall walk. Are you sweating (or shivering) at the idea of walking outside? Take a brisk stroll around your lo18

cal mall instead. Window shop, people watch and give your heart a workout in a climate-controlled environment. 4. Join a team. Pick an activity you love and round up some friends. Team sports can be fun — and keep you motivated and accountable. 5. Walk and talk. Even if you’re glued to your phone for work calls, you don’t have to be glued to your seat. Make it a habit to talk and walk. Some workplaces have walking paths to make it even easier to burn while you earn. 6. Tune into fitness during TV time. Reject your inner couch potato. Walk, jog in place or use the treadmill at the gym while you watch your favorite 30-minute show. 7. Park and walk. How many times have you circled the parking lot to find “the” spot? Spare yourself the stress and gain more energy by parking far away (or even in a remote lot) and walking farther to your destination. 8. Take the stairs. The elevator may go up — but it doesn’t make your heart rate climb. Take the stairs instead. You may huff and puff at first, but over time, your body will thank you. 9. Dance! Do it in a ballroom, at a club or even in your living room. You’ll burn calories and gain a new hobby. 10. Skip the cake, say goodbye to pie and take a walk after dinner. You’ll get a reward that’s sweeter than dessert: more family time. If these ideas don’t work for you, find something that you enjoy. Ditching the excuses can be the first step to a healthier you. Of course, if you have an injury, talk to your doctor first to see if there’s a low-impact exercise you can do or find out if you should wait until you’re healed. And here’s more food for thought: “Our culture no longer requires us to be hunters and gathers, but our bodies still need the physical activity that is required by that way of life,” Russell said. So check out these tips to get moving today!
