LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

D

ear Readers, You know sometimes the hardest thing is to find the right place for YOU! It can a Barber, Beauty Salon, even a store that has what you want to keep your style fresh. Don’t get me wrong it’s some super star Barbers & Stylists out there. There are even shops that have the hook up, but unless you’re in a secret club [to find them] you’re barred. In some cases that may be good for business but not in all. If it’s something good, more people should know about it, that’s my thinking anyway. Tampa Bay is an area of style in itself, but not all [beauty & barber] spots get the same amount of light, in order to grow properly. That’s where Urban Style & Beauty Guide comes in. We’re looking to shed light on that cool Barber Shop or that New Small Business, because light helps things grow. Your style tells your story at a glance, if you can’t get to your favorite [style] spot you can end up not looking like yourself. Settle for a hair do because you had no other choice or become a D.I.Y stylist. Let’s be real, alot of it is because you can’t find the right place that you feel comfortable at. That doesn’t mean it’s not out there, it’s like finding “Bigfoot”, I’m on the hunt. If you find a gem let me know about it, that gem needs some light so it can sparkle too. Like all styles urban style has a impact some may say it has more of an impact then others will admit. Urban style is a more relaxed feel but it shines confidence, spread enough confidence around and things start to change. HOW TO REACH US: People aim higher with more confidence. You see style & beauty on every Publisher: K. Speights kevin@urbansbg.com level is an encouragement to yourself that helps you build up. When everySales & Marketing: P. Ma’am, That’s

NASTY.

Don’t wait until the first of the year to get your bag together.

Detox your cluttered bag today in 5 easy steps.

Step 1: Empty & Access The Damage (Yikes!) Empty everything out of your purse, bag or receptacle (hey whatever you want to call your current traveling hoarding enabler). Dust out any lingering partcles over a sink or trash container to limit the mess.

Step 2: Creating a functional Wallet Trash. Old business cards, receipts, paper scraps, tissues (ew), post-its, random hair-clips, scrunchies etc. Trash other items that don’t deserve the real estate – like loyalty cards for stores you rarely visit or was forced to sign up for at check out. Place the regularly used credit cards, store cards and ID in convenient locations in your wallet. Double check any photos of loved ones to be sure they are current (remove photos of the Ex) and in good condition. Step 3: Tame the Key Ring Opt for a neat, functional key-rior case. Trash any keys you don’t need. If you don’t remember what they’re for now is a good time to put them on a separate ‘Mystery’ key-ring for later investigation. 10

Urban Style & Beauty Guide | September 2013

If you constantly fumble with your keys, consider putting them on the ring in the order you use them – example: car, garage, mailbox, top lock, bottom lock.

thing smaller that takes less space. Step 5: Organize the Mess Finally, return the streamlined items to your bag. Be sure to make use of various compartments to help keep all the contents organized.

Dos & Don’ts Don’t - keep floating tissues, random receipts, ancient mints and gum, loose coins, random pens, indecipherable notes and scrap paper.

Step 4: Cosmetic Purse Trash any items you don’t use regularly enough to justify their real estate. Discard anything old, in poor condition or yucky smelling (ew!). Consider streamlining your daily essentials. If you streamline the contents, consider downsizing your cosmetic purse to some-

Do - keep your new streamlined wallet, keys and cosmetic purse, cell phone, iPod, functional notebook, sweet writing pen, small tissue pack, hand sanitizer, and a container of Tic Tacs for those ‘yuck mouth’ moments. Tip: Make it a habit! Try to look through your purse once per week to remove any new clutter that you’ve picked up. This will help prevent purse cleaning becoming a huge chore that you dread. Good luck keeping your purse tidy! Email us your tips at: info@urbansgb.com

HOT TREND:

Spikey Nails

I

t seems that spikes have saved a special place on all the items lately. Be it clothes, shoes or nails, spikes are a must have of the moment. Such unique nails can only be the mark a nonconformist style, therefore only women who want to stand out from the crowd will paint their nails in black and add spikes. Forever a symbol of an “aggressive look, related to the music and the world of rock, metal and punk, since last year, spikes have turned into a real must-have for fashionistas. Some time ago, they were an accessory for those who wanted to make a difference, for those who wanted to stand out, be it with a pair of ripped jeans or black boots. Today, ultra-chic details for shirts, rings, necklaces, jackets and shopping bags to wear with disengagement, day or night, even on the nails. Of course, those who get out there with such a bold manicure want to get themselves noticed and will particularly be rated as always trendy. You should know, however, that wearing spikey nails at work or at dinner with your in-laws is not appropriate. This is not a subtle and delicate nail model to match an elegant evening outfit or an office outfit. Only if you want to approach a punk or gothic style, you have a free hand with the spikey nail models. A rock concert or a theme party is the perfect background to display your daring nails. The colors of a spikey manicure can only be Gothic-inspired, mainly black or very dark colors. We will not often see a model of spikey nails with bright colors because spikes are rather representative for the wild side of a woman and not for the playful one. You need to build seductive and sexy outfits to match with the black and bold nails, such as a pair of skinny leather pants with a leopard-print top, matched with a pair of stiletto shoes. Another outfit that will surely enjoy envious glances: a tight miniskirt with a pair of wedges platforms and an attractive makeup goes well with spikey nails! This manicure targets daring women who want to come into notice. What you need: black nail polish, spikes in different colors and designs and clear nail polish. To begin with, apply the black nail polish in a thick layer. With the help of a pair of tweezers, place the spikes on the nail in the desired pattern. After the black nail polish has dried, apply a coat of clear nail polish to fix the spikes. Spikey manicure is one of the less resistant manicures (the spikes tend to easily fall off), but definitely of special effect for an evening with friends in the club or for a drink and definitely a must try in 2013. The final effect is indeed unique and unusual, as it gives an original but not vulgar touch to our look, of course without exaggerating with studded pieces of clothing.

Denim Guide: A Year in Jeans

12

Urban Style & Beauty Guide | September 2013

This season, denim fabric comes in different colors and unusual cuts. Whether you want to make new purchases, or you want to stylishly reinterpret the existing outfits, we prepared a guide with the fall trends of 2013 in terms of jeans.

T

he return of this fabric was strongly felt last year, but in 2013, designers continue the casual denim revolution. From Balmain, where it is felt the influence of the 80s, to Chanel, from Donna Karan to Roberto Cavalli, creative minds have shown that this fabric can be shaped in many ways, for modern outfits. When you thought that denim cannot be reinvented anymore, international brands show that the impossible becomes possible with a little imagination and a bit of talent. Overall, the fall 2013 season denim garments are all the rage, from long to short jeans, from overalls to dresses and especially shirts. For this reason, what follows may not be new, you could already own these articles of clothing in your wardrobe, but you’ll learn some new things related to styling, interesting ideas for both beginners as well as style gurus. Every season, it is fascinating how a fabric with a history so rich has become a utility item in everyone’s closet. Classic jeans vs. printed jeans

An ultra feminine look can be obtained with the help of skinny jeans, and here you get a free pass to the color, although the prewashed ones are back in vogue. Printed jeans – floral (paisley), art deco or animal print – deserve a second look. Moreover, for a rock-ish look, waxed jeans are highly recommended. Finally, such a look cannot possibly be complete without a pair of heels or wedges.

minutes of fame”, which they took advantage of, and are now indispensable for a casual day look. Dresses and jumpsuits

Short jeans

Denim dresses and jumpsuits appear and disappear the fastest. Although in 2012 the dresses and skirts have been reinvented with talent, to end the denim cycle, 2013 marks the return of the jumpsuits that we used to wear. Denim shorts are a distinct Floridian trend this season. Although a few years ago we would see them everywhere, in the last few seasons they have not been a major trend. However, designers have thought to suggest them in various colors this season: from prewashed to khaki and, last but not least, gradient.

Denim clothing serves a variety of purposes. It can be the key piece of a sexy and stylish outfit, as well as of a casual one, depending on the intention of the person who wears it. U

Shirts, vests and coats

Nobody needs a description of the straight, classical jeans. But this season, for a unique look, you can wear them with masculine-inspired shoes, the famous brogues. If you want something more feminine, don’t forget the “boyfriend jeans” worn with a larger T-shirt or shirt.

These clothing items are found in many wardrobes, especially denim vests and jackets, that whenever you wear them, give you a vintage air. However, in recent years, shirts have received the well-deserved “15

99 Problems & STRESS Ain’t One. 10 Steps to help reduce stress. By:The American Heart Association

H

ealthy habits can protect you from the harmful effects of stress. Here are 10 positive healthy habits you may want to develop.

1) Talk with family and friends. A daily dose of friendship is great medicine. Call or write your friends and family to share your feelings, hopes and joys. 2) Engage in daily physical activity. Regular physical activity relieves mental and physical tension. Physically active adults have lower risk of depression and loss of mental functioning. Physical activity can be a great source of pleasure, too. Try walking, swimming, biking or dancing every day. 3) Accept the things you cannot change. Don’t say, “I’m too old.” You can still learn new things, work toward a goal, love and help others. 4) Remember to laugh. Laughter makes you feel good. Don’t be afraid to laugh out loud at a joke, a funny movie or a comic strip, even when you’re alone. 5) Give up the bad habits. Too much alcohol, cigarettes or caffeine can increase stress. If you smoke, decide to quit now. 6) Slow down. Try to “pace” instead of “race.” Plan ahead and allow enough time to get the most important things done. 7) Get enough sleep. Try to get six to eight hours of sleep each night. If you can’t sleep, take steps to help reduce stress and depression. Physical activity also may improve the quality of sleep. 8) Get organized. Use “to do” lists to help you focus on your most important tasks. Approach big tasks one step at a time. For example, start by organizing just one part of your life — your car, desk, kitchen, closet, cupboard or drawer. 9) Practice giving back. Volunteer your time or return a favor to a friend. Helping others helps you.

10) Try not to worry.

The world won’t end if your grass isn’t mowed or your kitchen isn’t cleaned. You may need to do these things, but today might not be the right time. U

FORD Fiesta

FORD INTRODUCES FIRST BACON-WRAPPED CAR, SATISFYING EVEN THE MOST INSATIABLE APPETITE • Ford gives “breakfast to go” a whole new meaning by wrapping a 2014 Ford Fiesta in bacon to mark International Bacon Day Aug. 31 • Ford Fiesta drivers can now buy bacon wraps for their ride to fully express their personality and commitment to pork’s crowning jewel • Allan Benton, CEO of Benton’s Country Hams and producer of what some consider the world’s greatest bacon, proudly approves the design Bacon has been a cornerstone of cuisine since ancient Rome. In recent years the cured meat has transformed from a food to a lifestyle – inspiring everything from medical supplies to plush toys. Now, with International Bacon Day just around the corner, Ford is savoring the salty side dish with the introduction of what is believed to be the first bacon-wrapped car – a 2014 Ford Fiesta. Ford is announcing the availability of custom bacon graphics that pork purists can have installed on their new Fiesta. The small car synonymous with fun and individuality is hitting dealerships around the country.

“In the 40 years I’ve been in this business, I’ve never seen so much interest in bacon,” said Allan Benton, CEO of Benton’s Country Hams. “It’s being used in bourbon, chocolate, ground beef, caramel corn and whatever else you can think of. This car just makes so much sense.” The pièce de résistance is the full “Bacon Wrap” – 10 giant strips of delicious bacon rolled around the entire Fiesta for a carb-free ride. Benton, known as the King of Bacon among venerable food writers and chefs, personally approved the design, and has deemed the bacon-wrapped Fiesta good enough to eat – and drive.

While the bacon-wrapped Fiesta has all the looks of indulgence, it’s incredibly lean at the pump – with an EPA-estimated rating of up to 41 mpg on the highway. And unlike bacon grease, nothing gets sizzled away from the Fiesta interior, with technology and features worthy of a blue ribbon at any county fair. The bacon graphics are just a few custom exterior vinyl graphics Fiesta buyers can have installed on their ride to express their personalities. The wraps are produced by Ford Custom Graphics, along with 3M Original Wraps, and are available at www. fordcustomgraphics.com.

“You can only imagine that a hillbilly from Tennessee is pretty happy to hear about a Ford wrapped in bacon,” said Benton. “I expect there will be some real excitement among the young city crowd.” Other options from the bacon-wrap Fiesta menu include: •Bacon Racing Strips – two pieces of bacon that go on the car’s hood and resemble classic dual racing stripes •Side of Bacon – two individual strips of bacon that wrap over rear wheel – popular among those on a diet “It’s no secret that bacon inspires a lot of passion, and that’s what the Fiesta celebrates,” said Liz Elser, Ford Fiesta marketing manager. “Our customers have a hunger for self-expression. Plus, it’s just awesome to drive down the road in a piece of bacon.”
